In Halo 2 during the Arbiter's missions it would not make sense for them to have the Covenant speaking their own language and not English.

The game was released in English speaking territories, not Covenant-occupied territories. The Covenant aren't real.

If you are playing from the view point of the Arbiter, then you would know the language and understand the Covenant around you. This is presented to the player as English however, because that's what the player will be able to understand. It would be really stupid to have all the Covenant speaking in their language with subtitles for a few missions of the whole series.

As for the rest, yes, they had translators. The ODST and the Spartans.

As for Reach, the game and the entire story is fiction. As in, make-believe? Whimsy? Fantasy? Made-up?

They can invent and implement a way for the protagonists of Reach to have translators. Know why? IT'S A -blam!-ING STORY!

The spartans and the covenant both have translators, so they can understand each other...

Counter Proof:
Halo 3
Mission: The Covenant; 3nd to last cutscene
The Prophet of Truth and Johnson are BOTH talking to each other. Niether has a helmet. SO that means the Covenant know English.

No, it means UNSC soldiers have neural implants containing translation software, and that covenant can understand english but not necessarily form the words due to the way their bodies are structured.

Long live the Last Refuge!

Translators, mentioned in Halo: Ghosts of Onyx (Section: Blue Team) and Fall of Reach (I think).

because you are playing from the covenant point of view, theoretically he is speaking his native language it's just set to english for us to understand. unless you would have preferred to play thay level with subtitles.

***Translators is the easy way out of the issue.. Bungie could still incorporate the covenants language in raw form.*****

They could. But I liked hearing what the heck the Elites were blarghing about in Halo 3. And no, translators are not the easy way out, they're the realistically feasible way out. Would you rather pull out the Blargh Honk to English dictionary every time an Elite says something and waste five minutes paging through it while he flanks you?

And it's mentioned that MJOLNIR MkVI has translators built into it. So if we're running MkV in Reach, which is canonically what it should be, you'll have all your Blargh Honk back anyways.

Fear is triggered by not understanding, or the unknowing. If I heard some Elite blabbering at me (which they kinda did in CE anyway) that would be intimidating because I couldn't understand him. This would do wonders for the h3 brutes who are anything but intimidating. Make fun all you want but it's true.

Yet again Bungie FAILS with realism.

Yet again you FAIL to understand that it's a game.

  • 11.14.2009 9:24 PM PDT

Message me if you want, I will try to get back as soon as possible.

See you on the forums and in the games.

Yet again Bungie FAILS with realism.

Since when did Halo revolve around realism? You do realize you are a biologically enhanced super-soldier fighting aliens, right? Also I think a translator is a legitimate reason, all the Covenant would haave to do to learn our language is capture a computer and put it on theirs, and then they have the language.

I never understood this. Why not ad captions or something? That way we can understand them but they speak in their own alien tongues. Yet again Bungie FAILS with realism.

Oh, Reach and stuff. Now I can post in this section.

In Halo 2, Master chief launches himself out of an airlock to collide with a ship while carrying a bomb twice his weight. He then used the blast of said bomb and his own legs to propel himself to a freighter KILOMETERS away.
Do you give Bungie gives a flying -blam!- about realism? "Why SHOULD they?" is an even better question.

Translators worked on grunts in Halo 1, but not elites. You wanted to hear native tongue, go play combat evolved. Seeing as that Reach is set before CE, it's a give in we won't understand Elites at least. So quit your -blam!-ing.

that is realistic if you knew the full capabilities of a spartan.

I do, but you know what? He would have tore through that -blam!- freighter even if his aim was good enough to hit it.

A: He used the explosive decompression of the hanger to launch the bomb.
B: He launched himself to a FRIGATE, not a freighter.

I would like the game to start off in the native language, but around 1/2 to 2/3s of the way through, **the Humans capture and Elite, and discover a translator that they use to understand English, then just reverse engineer it, allowing you to understand the Covenant**

**Just a possible scenario.

  • 11.14.2009 9:50 PM PDT

Beside the fact they have already captured Elites before, and had face-to-face conversation with it?.

Also, Bungie can justify aliens speaking English because...

They made Halo.

Really.

Realism in a video game where genetically modified cyborgs in powered armors fight vicious religious aliens who want to use doomsday weapons made apparently by Humanity itself god only knows how long ago to fight an evil parasite who zombifies all intelligent life.

And you're tweaked that Elites don't say "Wort-wort."
