I dont know if this is one of those stupid questions that going to make people wanna bash me...but i did look around the site, i've played halo since it was released, i'm a fan of bungie since the days of thier creation, and the only thing i havent done really is read the books about halo...sorry, there are just a lot of books out there that i'm required to read before i can sit down and bust open a leisure book. So if someone has a real answer as to why the grunts not only speak english...but also why no other alien does, and how grunts are capable of speaking it...and if its just because its funny to shoot an alien that can taunt you in your own language, thats perfectly understandable...but i think there are some great opportunities for a fun thread with this one.

Sometimes Elites speak english, but i don't know thats a good question, I guess so that they can say "AHG! not again!" when you stick a nade on them.

I think there are already is one or two threads on this topic - I think someone said it was a voice interpreter built into the MC's helmet? maybe it can only interpret grunt?

i could be imagining this but i thought that I read in the books that the chiefs armor had been fitted with translation software. the software wasn't perfect but could deciefer some things.

Yeah, the Grunt's language is the only one that has been translated. Everything else hasn't.

Hey did you know that Elites speak english backwards?! Really! Record one talking and play it backwards, it's kinda hard to understand but it's cool, like when they say "WORT, WORT, WORT!" they're actually saying" GO, GO, GO!" to their troops?

this is sorta off-topic, but i read somewhere that some things that the Elites say are actually english phrases backwards and distorted, i wonder what they said to get "WORT WORT WORT!"

What is the Elite saying when he says, "Yu go snowze ga-bibble." Or something like that. It's hilarious when you hear them say it.

i don't think there are any translators because from the novels Zamamee (a spec-ops elite) was asking captain keyes where the warrior in green armor was and keyes rplied that if he finds MC he'd better duck. So what im saying is that keyes could understand him

And that's why you hear some broken English from the Elites, because they haven't completely translated it the way that they did with the Grunts

if you remember correctly, the elites actually speak english there. they hate the language, but they use it when they need to communicate with humans.

there is no translator for elite, brute, or jackal communication - there have only been enough studies to translate grunt.

Isn't this in the manual?
Anyways, there is a translator, but it can only translate phrases from the grunts.

some of you are correct, the Chief does have a translation software, but it was not real good. Cortana made changes to it...to make it better.

The grunts also have the translators, It converts their language into English.
That is what scared the spooks over at research, the covenant knew the human language and that they had translators...

Remember during the game when capt. keyes said he overheard some of the covenant talking about halo? i dont think they would be speaking english in front of him, so how did he know they were talking about halo?

Okay you people need some enlightenment.

The reason why we hear the Grunts is because of the neural implants that EVERY UNSC soldier has. Whether they be Spartan, crewman, or marine. They all have one. The implants themselves have translators so that we all know what the enemy is saying. Otherwise the Grunts would sound like dogs with gutteral barks and squels.

Now the Elites do not speak english. Although we have barely even fought the Elites for a few weeks(first encounter with an Elite was at Reach), their language is just simple enough for the translators to change some of the words for us. That is why we can understand them on a few things.

I hope that clears up the fog in this thread.

If capn Keyes had said he overheard some of the covenant saying "Wort Wort Wort" I dont think it would have helped the person playing the game much...Just a thought.

I believe the answer is obvious. Whichever person from Bungie did the voice acting for the grunts can't speak Covenant. Am I the only one who sees this? ;)

But off of the practical notes, I believe this has been answered. He has a translator. Maybe Cortana can do some changes and get some more phrases translated.
