Subject: What can be learnt from Modern Warfare 2

Sniping from afar since 1980

Now before i get flamed, I love Halo, I love the multiplayer, I love the mythology, I read the novels so i am not someone who is mearly trying to incite a MW2 vs Halo war.

Halo3's campaign was good, but I always felt there was soimthing missing, your read the books and get a picture in your minds eye. Well after playing MW2 I know what it is, scale!

The are parts in MW2 where you feel the whole 'desperate struggle' and that it isn't just you on your own, you're part of a bigger picture with a war going on all around you, comrades falling, and chaos everywhere.

Halo3 didn't give me that feeling, there were some great set pieces and parts (On Legendary) where i wanted to pull my hair out, but it never felt like Earth was at war, there wasn't enough carnage going on, not enough allys with you. Its the whole of Earth against an unstoppable Alien oppressor, there should have been more.

As I say I am not trying to start a flame war, but Halo Reach is a big opportunity, I battle that (most of us) will have read about and have a disctinct picture in our heads of what it will look like, and all i am asking is maybe have a look at what MW2 did, and then imagine that with Spartans and Covenant (particularly the Wiskey Hotel section)

Heres what I learnt, Halo and COD dont mix.

You say your not trying to start a flame war and yet you come to a forum and post something that you know most people will get angry about.

Reach need to do its own thing.

Huge space battles happening just abouve our heads, endless hords of enamys fighting agenst 10 ODST and 50 normal soldures. You watch as slowly they all die as they are overwealmed. That would be epic.

I know that Reach should do it's own thing, I don't want a clone. What I am getting at is that things can be learn't

Yes Bunige could take things from COD and put them in Reach, but it screw up what we know as Halo.

lol

Now to think of it, I haven't felt that "desperate struggle" feeling in Halo since I first saw the Flood in Halo CE.

Infinity Ward did an excellent job in capturing the essence and stress of a full scale war on the homeland. Enemy operators dropping in all around your squad, bullets flying inches from your face, snipers that actually posed a tactical threat, AA cascading the air, ground forces playing a deadly game of hide and go seek.
You may be a Spartan in Halo, but war should be no less stressful, especially a planetary war on Earth.

i think it is cause the master chief is usually going solo that takes away part of the feeling of war. instead of getting the feeling that the covenant is a powerful enemy it kind of feels like they are a smaller faction than they are.

You're not listening to what he's saying. He is talking about the campaign, which, to be honest, wasn't as epic as he had hoped for. He's just suggesting that Bungie should make the campaign more interesting. Make it feel like you're in a big scale battle between the humans and the far superiour covenant.

You say tomato; I say potato.

1) wider variation in gameplay
2) shocking scenes that blow your mind

  • 11.15.2009 6:29 AM PDT

C&H

TBF MW2 had the ability to throw curve balls like the 2nd to last mission.

You couldnt really throw a betrayal plot into halo as your fighting aliens, unless they brought the serperatist earth colonies in on the covenant side.

MW2 may have just seemed more possible to happen than anything you will experience playing halo.

I think Bungie do need to make this halo game EPIC as it is their last one that hopefully they will set a bench mark for all the people microsoft are going to be using to milk halo to death harder to pass!

3. Graphics so good you feel like you are actualy there
4. Huge battles
5. Epic cutscenes, the longer the better
6. Slightly more blood
7. Realistic voice acting (Halo 3:ODST's main weakness)
8. Heavy rain fall (I know it doesn't sound like much but it would make the game feel dark as well as powerfull

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I honestly don't like MW2 at all. I'm sick of perks, of being hit with a throwing knife in my toe and dying, and other various noob crap in MW2.

No dude i honestly understand what you mean.

The story is good. But the way its implicated through playing the game, its just way to relaxed/laid back.

You read the books, and theres always talk of Humanity having like Months possibly weeks to survive (mainly after Reach fell) and you get the struggle.

But in the game, i thought no one was really that bothered if Humanity kicked the bucket or not :/ there just wasnt that tension or as i said, that sense of struggle.

So yeah i get what you mean, Reach needs to take that more into account with the gameplay, for the sake of immersing yourself.

I agree.

It's funny, and I think a good indication of the integrity and maturity of these forums, that a post identical to this but devoid of MW2 references could become a hot topic unanimously agreed upon, yet the second somebody mentions that piss-poor excuse of a game, people instantly flick into illogical mindlessness.

Chill out people. You may not like MW2; you may be jealous at its success. But you should really learn to respect that many people like it, and that is has done some things very well; things that other games could learn from.

I can see that this is going to degenerate into a mud slinging exercise. I personally prefer halo multiplayer, MW2 is too random for me, put the campaign had strengths which Bungie could take on board

thats not what he meant. I agree with the OP, more epic sections would be nice. Its hard to imagine we're fighting for humanity when we get these guys as teamates.

I agree. Halo 3 was mostly centered around the master chief, and him finding Cortana, then doing a whole bunch of random missions that didn't get to the point that aliens are attacking the earth. For the love of god, aliens are attacking the earth. Even ODST got this feeling. Reach needs to be like that. It needs to be more specific to, well, the fact that aliens are attacking the earth. Not that master chief found a virtual person.

Just my opinion.

So Bungie should keep on with the 3D space invaders? I'm getting a little tired of it.

If anyone has detailed scenarios to add as new missions that would have high level action or interactivity, type it up in that thread and I'll post/quote it
