Subject: Does bungie care about the competitive community?

MLG is a huge part of halo, and encompasses a large part of the fan base. Many say that the MLG style of play is the most competitive and fast paced way to play. For instance, any new gamer to halo can take an ar, and charge people for a few kills. However it takes accuracy and strategy to "out br" people who are good at the game. Also, there is zero team work with AR games. What is the point of calling out when everyone just has a spray gun that shoots literally up to 25 feet?

My question is, does bungie care enough about the competitive community to taylor halo reach to continue to play well in the MLG style we have been playing for years? Or will they keep trying to chase the leisurely noob friendly style of play, which will attract the less talented, and less serious gamers who are now playing CoD?

Well it's a legitimate question and if bungie has this website to be in tune with their fans this is what they accomplished here. I have been playing since Combat Evolved, and it's just disappointing to see a game that could be about skill and strategy, and attracts fans around the world to gather at events be compromised just because bungie needs to tune it for noobs to compete with less competitive games.

Well you have to admit if they add more customization options for forge, custom games, etc you can really make it as competitive as you want. So what you should be asking for is not for them to make the whole game more competitive, but for them to give the MLG community and everyone else more of the ability to customize it to their wants and needs.

  • 11.15.2009 7:44 AM PDT

Let's just hope the customization you speak of is very present. There is a rumor going around that we should expect health bars in reach (like in Halo: CE). This will be detrimental to competitive gaming.

As long as there's a BR, MLG will thrive in halo.

Rumors are rumors

-There was no BR in Halo 1, yet that was the most competitive of all 3 Halo games. Competitive play will adapt to whatever Bungie gives us, with or without the BR, just as long as there is an equivalent weapon that fits that role.

K

you no that bungie gave MLG a playlist right?

  • 11.15.2009 7:50 AM PDT

But do any of you realize that if the gaming engine were ANYTHING like ODST's the game will never be nearly as competitive as halo 2 or 3? No matter what weapons are available.

Yes, a mid range accurate (NON SPRAY) gun is essential for competitive play for halo, but the gaming engine is a very large factor in setting the pace and playstyle of the game.

Actually a great point. But the competitive players from halo: CE aren't the same competitive players from halo 3 (For the most part)

  • 11.15.2009 7:54 AM PDT

skill = the ability, coming from one's knowledge, practice, aptitude, etc., to do something well. this includes anything, good at killing with an AR? it's skill. good at driving vehicles? it's skill. skill does not depend on what you use.

now if i recollect, most of bungies decisions have been in favor of the competitive community after halo 3 launched. why were shield doors removed? why did bungie add MLG? why are swat and snipers permanent and grifball and infection not? why were anvil and other foundry maps removed? and why was equipment such as the radar jammer removed?

i'm pretty sure bungie cares about the competitive community, sometimes i think they care too much...

Like I told you in another thread... Health bars were in Halo 1, yet it was the most competitive of all 3 Halo games. Stop acting foolish.

Actually a lot of them started in Halo 1, the "top" players at least. The younger kids are the newer competitive players who will just easily adapt regardless, so it's fine.

lol Damn, I COMPLETELY forgot about the Radar Jammer. They need to bring that back...

You have placed no logic or reasoning behind you claim, and can't get your point across without an insult, but I'm sure you are much more articulate in person.

The MLG community has been increasing growing since halo 1 and 2. Halo 3 actually has the largest MLG fan base out of all three.

  • 11.15.2009 8:10 AM PDT

I have once had the pleasure of facing two MLG members in a matchmaking game once.

I had expected them to be good players and decent to others. While they did play a great game and won, directly afterwards all the pair did was taunt and boast about their abilities, telling us on the losing team we "sucked". So, I could care less about MLG if all its members are like that.

Can they not cater to both? The reason why Halo has remained popular is because it caters to a wide audience of gamers. Please don't waste time being paranoid that you are going to get the short end of the stick.

  • 11.15.2009 8:13 AM PDT

Well I'm sure you would have stood a much better chance with your AR.

  • 11.15.2009 8:14 AM PDT

I'm mad that you made a topic of this since Bungie has been focusing all their attention on you MLG guys ever since Halo 2 and us who actually like a good campaign story have suffered greatly for it. Halo Reach's multiplayer is probably gonna have a carbon copy of Halo 3's multiplayer just some new weapons and a new way to play (Health pickups will actually make things harder) so you'll still have the same thing there with minor differences.

Just please let Bungie actually work on the single player this time around because we want a good as experience as you MLG players do.

They should do, the good thing about Halo 3 was that you could customise anything you wanted to, How much damage you did, how fast you moved, all sorts of things. With forge you could tweak the maps to play how you want them to. All those lend themselves to competitive play and non-competitive goofing around. More customisation benefits the MLG community and those of us that spray AR around randomly, so I hope they have a huge amount of customisation for reach.

The competitive multiplayer fan base is what keeps these halo games popular years after they come out. The kids who are defenseless without ARs are the same kids who will switch back to CoD in a month.

This thread has nothing to do with single player.

Signatures are for squares.

The majority of the time I wonder if they care about their actual fans. Not casuals or MLG.

Look at what Bungie did for MLG.

They made Isolation for MLG purposes, and MLG doesn't touch the map.

They remade Lockout for MLG, and MLG doesn't use it.

Bungie remade Chillout for MLG, and MLG doesn't use it.

Bungie remade Heretic for MLG, they actual use this one.

But when the community begs and begs for maps like Coag or Headlong, of course they refuse those ideas.

It's just not right.

  • 11.15.2009 8:23 AM PDT

The AR can be just as good as other weapons, it just has a different tactic.

Again, I could care less for 'competitive' multiplayer because people take it too seriously, then start boasting and bragging when they win. If they don't win, they go to insults anyway.

I have to disagree. Halo 3 was released with valhallah, which bungie has stated multiple times it is a spiritual successor of Blood Gulch. While I agree the game still needs blood gulch and valhallah does not compare, bungie still made the effort.
