To start with, I did't like Firefight in ODST much at all.
It just seemed like one long, unoriginal objectived (Defend position A, or kill x number of covvies) in a small bit from one campaign mission, but endlessly long.

I though of some ways to make it way more fun and customizable.

Idea 1: Firefight Forge.
I think this idea's already been suggested, but anyway, it would basically be enabling you to place respawns, weapons, vehicles, and barricades and other items in it, just like Halo 3's Forge.

Idea 2: Complete Enemy Customization.
This idea is where you of course can't choose where enemies spawn, but can choose how many of each spawn, how often, etc.
Complete list of things to costumize Enemies:
Rank
Colour
Health and shields
Active Camo
Race
How brave they are (EG, Brutes will always go berserk as soon as they see you, or run in terror.)
Intelligence (EG, will they form search parties and hunt you, or simply wander individually and disorganized?)

Faction[s] Ideas
Forerunner: These would include Sentinals, maybe if Bungie made different types, or maybe you could just add them to attack/help you fight. (I'll get to an Allies section later)

Flood: I thought about Flood, and of course they won't be in Reach Campagin, they weren't there story-wise, but since when was any Firefight match Canon in any way?
They aren't of course, so I thought it would be a nice way to please flood-fans or people looking for a different enemy if you could spawn all types of Flood, and how strong they are, etc. Also, what weapons they have. So yes, it would be possible to have a Human combat form with overshields, camo and a Fuel Rod cannon. :)

Covenant: The obvious, you'd be able to spawn all types, ranks, colours of every race, and any weapon compatible with the race.

Allies: Now, a bit I literally just thought up while typing.
The ability to spawn/ have spawned at the beggining of the game, allies.
Allies can be ANY race, rank, class, and are of course completely customizable. So you can have 3 flood tank forms following you in a squad, with 4 sentinals scouting the area too. Again, customizable as much as the enemy versions; any weapons, health, shields, camo/no camo, and how intelligent and brave they are.

Difficulty and Skulls: What skulls will be used, and when they activate, and for how long. Maybe you'd be able to make your own skulls.

Enemy troop customization and Saving gametypes:
Gametypes and maps would be the same as in Halo 3, load map, load gametype, and share with friends, etc, etc.
Also, the ability to make enemy units. To save having to create them each gametype, you could have saved, for instance:

Example Unit 1: A squad of 3 Hunters with active camo and high intelligence and health. Weapons: (Yes, I don't know about you but I'd love to be able to customize Hunter Cannons. Needler, spiker, carbine shots, they'd be interesting I think) Spiker cannons, heavy damage and the troops aim very well.

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

If any of your ideas are to be implemented there would have to be NO achievments for firefight. OR there would have to be matchmaking for firefight, or you can't achieve achievements on forged or customized maps.

This falls into the "Awesome but Improbably" Territory, because A.I., in general, sucks massive ass at adapting to new environments. Their ability to jump on a misplaced crate in the campaign is a massive achievement in game design. Now, I'm no game developer (though I do wish to become one), but I'm guessing that making even a basic A.I. is hard work. Fine tuning even the grunts on Easy must have taken weeks if not months. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that creating an A.I. that can universally adapt to any environment it's given is next to impossible. The technology just isn't there yet.

I mean Jesus Christ, it took scientists 20 years just to teach a robot how to recognize and traverse stairs.

It's an awesome idea, but... maybye in another decade or so. Sorry.

this would be epic!!
you could have your whole team spawn with rocket luancehers and 2 hunters and 5 flood tanks guarding you while your getting attacked by 20 brute chieftans attacking you with high inteligence!! would be awesome!


and to the guy who said that you couldnt have any acheivements for firefight you could make this a custom games feature that you changed the gametype to fire fight then changed the settings like you normally do with custom games but with the dudes suggestions.

you could then have a default firefight menu like you normally do in ODST so that the achievements were only unlockable with the normal default firefight.

awesome idea though dude. I would pee my pants if this was in reach!!

the guy above me is right though sadly:(...so the forge option might not work but i think that everything else would!
