Everyday we see people complaining about the things they want removed, the things that caused problems, unnecessary parts of the game, etc etc etc.....


I think it's about that time that we discuss the elements of the game we want to see STAY for Halo Reach. I'll be updating this thread with some things that made for an overall better experience and didn't really cause any problems to the core of the game.



Weapons and equipment to stay identical
---This section is for the weapons and equipment that everyone can agree upon that no changes need to be made, such as the overall functionality of them, not the appearance---

-Monitor mode in Forge.
-Current theater mode with more options, such as rewind, clips tweaks, etc.

Great Additions to the Halo Universe
---This section is dedicated to all the things that were introduced into the Halo Universe, but just quite aren't PERFECT yet and need some tweaking.---

-Magnum: Make it more effective, increase bullet count, add a scope.
-SMG: Tweaks
-AR: Tweaks
-Rockets: Great blast radius and faster velocity.
-Energy Sword: Could extend/come out quicker.
-Carbine: More effective and sound powerful like the Halo 3 Beta/ODST.
-Plasma Pistol: Tweaks and stun.
-Plasma Rifle: Stun
-Gravity Hammer: Could come out A LOT quicker.
-Brute Shot: Somehow make it more effective.
-Spiker: Somehow make it more effective
-Mauler: Tweaks
-Spike Grenades: Larger/effective horizontal blast radius.
-Bubble Shield: Could deploy quicker.

-Wraith
-Prowler/Spectre: Better turret.

-Custom Games: A search browser.
-Forge: Better usability and more options.
-Theater Mode: Better functions.
-Game Clips: Less load times and disconnecting issues.



If you can think of anything else then post away and I'll update it if there isn't a controversial issue over it. Also, if you disagree with something stated above and have seen much discussion about something I mentioned that must be changed, then post and I will make the changes accordingly. I'm welcome to further categories and other ways to expand upon this as well, just keep the suggestions and ideas flowin'!

Elites, it's sad how i replay halo 1 and 2 just to have a good fight. hell if halo 3 had the halo 2 brutes with smarter AI i wouldn't talk any trash about them.

-Shotgun - Larger effective range. (Slightly less than CE)
-Energy Sword - Should be able to be pulled out quickly (similar to Halo 2)
-Plasma Grenades - Should not explode when near other explosions.
-Bubble Shield - Should be removed or made to only accomodate a single Spartan. (Like in the Starry Night trailer)

Boarding-bring back the halo 2 version, i hate how when i get boarded normally i just put down my controller because i can't do anything. How realistic is that?

I haven't seen the community argue upon this since the beginning of Halo 3 because I think everyone has realized that as it is, there is a clear difference between choosing the Beam Rifle and the Sniper Rifle... both with their advantages/disadvantages

I've seen that thread discussing the Shotgun, but I have yet to see anyone make a valid point as to why it should increase. The Shotgun is extremely powerful up close and if you increase its range without adjusting the effectiveness WHEN up close, then you have a weapon that leans more towards unbalanced gameplay. The way it is now promotes the importance of having another weapon with a further range and using them both interchangeably.


-Energy Sword - Should be able to be pulled out quickly (similar to Halo 2)

That's true, I think I've seen many people complain about this too so I'll just leave it as "Sword clashes to stay" instead of the overall Sword functionality itself.


-Plasma Grenades - Should not explode when near other explosions.

That has to do with the physics and the way the game engine works with the weapons, not the weapon itself I believe.


-Bubble Shield - Should be removed or made to only accomodate a single Spartan. (Like in the Starry Night trailer)
-Power Drain - Remove
-Regenerator - Remove
-Radar Jammer - Should be modified to make it more useful.

I haven't seen the community collectively share these ideas.

Changes made to the list:
-Removed Energy Sword from weapon functionality and added the inclusion of Sword battles to gameplay.
-Changed the part of boarding vehicles to the INCLUSION of boarding vehicles in general, not the functionality of the process.

What are the advantages of having a Human sniper without the ability to fire in quick succession? It seems to me the Beam rifle is superior. When I play, most players tend to favor using the beam rifle over the sniper in Team Snipers.

Notice I said less than CE. Right now the range on the shotgun is too small. In close quarters (within mauler + melee kill range) it should be able to get a consistent 1 shot kill. From this range to the SMG's effective range, its power should exponentially drop off. Right now, the shotgun is just too random to be relied upon and is less useful than the mauler (Which should be the weaker weapon, since it's dual wieldable) because of how slow it is to pull out as well as how slow it is to melee.

-Bubble Shield - Should be removed or made to only accomodate a single Spartan. (Like in the Starry Night trailer)

Large bubble shields encourage camping and slow down gameplay. A small bubble shield that can deploy quickly (as soon as it is dropped) would, I think, serve Bungie's intended purpose. (It would function exactly like the one in the Starry Night trailer)

The power drain requires little to no skill to use. It'd rather have equipment that are tactical and not overpowering.

The regenerator is also overpowering and does not promote skilled play. Having a regenerator in your pocket should not allow you to become essentially invincible to anything other than a single shot kill weapon.

Right now the radar jammer isn't used in matchmaking and I think that says something in itself. It's not useful enough to be incorporated into matchmaking and, I feel, that it's rather annoying. It should be modified somehow to make it more useful, or it should be removed completely.

Now you have. It doesn't make any sense for a huge vehicle like the warthog to be able to be flipped by bullets.

Boarding vehicles is another element of gameplay that doesn't promote skill. Because someone had the mental capacity to press a button to board your vehicle shouldn't allow them to leave you helpless. There should be something you can do to repel a boarder.

Mancannons give bungie an excuse to decrease movement speed and make maps too large. Mancannons can be incorporated but as far as I've seen, I don't think they contribute to the gameplay experience. Often times they can be aggravating, such as when people use the needler across mancannon on Narrows.

I have three general disagreements:

1-2. The bubble shield and regenerators promote more random and cheap gameplay. This may not particularly be because of them, but may rather be due to their prolific use on the maps and their extremely short spawn times for their power. It is so cheap when someone throws a regen down and wins because he had a piece of equipment.

If the equipment spawned more like power weapons (few and with long respawns), they'd be perfect. You could control them and they'd be a tactical point to either go for or ignore. But as it stands, you can't fight anyone on Isolation and other maps without having them throw this crap. I wouldn't mind them being taken out or just modified on maps. They're fun and have great potential, just not too much.

I think the radar jammer was the perfect example of equipment that could be used to your advantage (a great deal, I might add), but required you to do some thinking and communicating to implement it. I'd like to see more of that type of equipment as opposed to the cheaper stuff.

3. The banshee IS NOT fair. If you control the laser and the banshee, it's the equivalent to controlling the rocks and the banshee in H2. You're unstoppable. Sure, Valhalla has missile pods, but any decent pilot will avoid those. And with banshee and laser superiority, you've got no worries if you're a decent pilot.

You can easily rack up the kills with a banshee because there just aren't enough counters for it. Warthogs can be taken down with a ton of different things (PDs, PPs, grenades, turrets, etc), but banshees are a different breed. They are just so ridiculously powerful in this game as it is now.

I talk about a lot of issues I think need to be addressed here, though I know the scope of your thread is to address what is good.

Just because something isn't extremely difficult to do doesn't mean it doesn't take skill NOR does it mean it should be removed from the gameplay... Hence the boarding of vehicles.

The Sniper Rifle is fine the way it is. There are many one shot Snipers or other Snipers that shoot slowly in other games and in real life. So that is just your opinion on the matter.

The Shotgun is a lot better to use than the Maulers. You can NEVER get a one shot kill from a Mauler, but you CAN with a Shotgun.


I'll change the equipment mentioned because there are some valid points by you and fifth as well.

I'll change the Bubble Shield because I realize there are some problems with it, such as it not coming out on time or not coming out at all.

The Regenerator though... What you said about it doesn't make it bad as a piece of equipment. That's the whole point of Bungie including equipment, is it not? To include that X Factor when you're fighting someone. You take the initiative to get a Regenerator in a fight, you're getting shot at then BAM! deploy Regenerator as you get away to cover or as it assists you a little bit.

Now in regards to your Banshee complaint. I don't see that as poor design on the Banshee's behalf... That's just poor choice of level/weapon layout. The Banshee functions wonderfully and why should one man be able to win a fight 1v1 against a Banshee head on if they have nothing but a gun? If you see someone in a Banshee, you know what you're going up against so you have to change your approach accordingly.

---For example, you see someone Sniping through the open field and you don't have a Sniper spawned on your side so you can't really make any rash movements if the Sniper is at least decent. So what? The Sniper is overpowered and unbalanced? You see where I'm going with this? There are more than enough ways to counter these things like the Banshee and Laser control.

2. 3rd person= too cheap, some1 can just be in party chat with some1 else and tell where the other team is.

I don't want many remakes for maps, just a few spread out in DLC and maybe two that ship with the game. I want The Pit to be brought into Reach.

You forgot one of the most important ones: shields. They kick this realistic crap any day where you just spray and pray, run around looking for healthpacks instead of playing the game, etc.

I think you covered just about all of the weapons and such, so let me say some of the attributes of the game I appreciate:

1. I like the way halo makes multiplayer epic. There are always multiple ways to attacking a particular point, but there aren't too many. It's like having three to five strategic bottlenecks per map which makes the gameplay awesome.

2. The flow of the game is so much better with shields, being able to move around more and not have to worry about someone lying prone in a house, behind a car, or in any other number of the million pieces of cover strewn about.

3. The power weapon timing and control is perfect in H3, which fixes huge problems from H1-2.

4. A 2 grenade limit is better than H2's nade fest

5. Smaller blast radius on the grenades are better

6. I do dislike the amount of damage melee does (should take two to down shields, three to kill), but I like the implementation of mutual deaths for online play, particularly.

7. Having AR starts is better than SMG starts in H2, but at the same time this is a complaint, as the AR does not go far enough for most of the maps.

If I think of any more, I'll add them later.

Great points! The only thing I'd disagree with is the consistency of the blast radius of Frag Grenades. Sometimes I feel like I put a Frag Grenade in a person's POCKET and they don't die...

Consistency may need a change, though that could be due to connection. However, the typical blast radius is good, IMO.

My key thing is that Bungie stays focused on their core '30 seconds of fun' philosophy. It's worked for the last four titles, and it will work for Reach.
