If there's one thing i pick up from these forums, it's the epic/huge battle concept. Think the 'Believe' commercial, or the odst commercial. A massive battle where not you, but everyone is trying to survive. Bodies laying side by side, alien and human alike. Plasma shots, tracer rounds, explosions, aircraft flying overhead (odst had this). We need an EPIC battle Bungie.

It's very frustrating to me that the games are nothing like the 'We are ODST' or the 'Believe' commercials. It's like the advertising people who have no correlation with the Halo games or Bungie, can depict best what Halo should and could be.

Well the whole idea of the halo games is that you against the world guerrilla warfare idea.

That was when you were on your own playing as the Chief. Hopefully now we will see a little more of the large skirmishes and squad based combat with your Spartans.

Good, bad, I'm the guy with the clichéd lines.

I thought that one mission in Halo 3 was pretty epic that had the 2 scarabs and the banshees and the scorpion and the hornets (although the hornets made it kind of easy, I think it would have been better if they were transport hornets).

Good point. I guess we know Bungie can make it possible.

I liked the book about reach. It should be a lot like it, being 6 and trained, maybe like Fallout 3, where you played some very important part of your life (in this case, John or some other spartan.)And those would be your epic moments, and then suddenly you wake up to find your colony under attack... Then it would be intensely stimulating, dazed and dizzy, trying to run outside, Your fellow spartans waiting for your arrival. ---- I didn't read it all so [input rest of epic battle here].

Another great idea for battle scenes is the ability to command squadmates to do something like: [Go to position A] or [Go to position B] but limited so it won't be too much of a strategy game.

I agree totally.

one thing i was really expecting at the end of halo 3, the most hyped up game in history that was supposed to end an amazing trilogy, was a huge and epic battle. I wanted somthing more, somthing that left me and my friends going, oh my god, at the end.

of course that never happened, and i really didnt want to bring call of duty into this but there were so many parts in modern warfare 2 that left me realizing i was holding my breath. I want to feel the same thing in halo reach!

hopefully bungie has implimented one of these situations into their new game

Freedom has two parts: potential and resolution; as metaphors have two parts : form and interpretation; of course, the two are intertwined. Metaphor lines the road to freedom, as symbols and words are the bricks and mortar of meaning. Freedom being the briocoleus, the mason.

Spartans don't have any place in a large battle. Why use a spartan when you can use a tank or a nuke? Spartans are good at being stealthy and carrying out special missions, in fact i don't think massive battles even exist in Halo due to the technologies they use.

  • 11.17.2009 12:08 AM PDT

there are some pretty massive battles in the books, especially in reach, all of which have spartans in them

  • 11.17.2009 12:11 AM PDT

You kind of got that feeling with Halo Wars, but truely see a huge battle like something from the Believe Video would be amazing and one of my top game moments.

Yes you're right and no, don't even bring up the Dual Scarab fight. That is not an epic, large scale fight. Sure, it seems that way with the 2 Scarabs but for the Covenant's last Stand, there overall battle was really, really weak.

The games used Master Chief as more of a Commando sort of character and never really explored a real, War scenario. Which means, up till now, Bungie still has no experience with that.

Reach pretty much demands that, based on the setting, premise and games which have come out after that and raised expectations.

  • 11.17.2009 12:50 AM PDT

I'm getting really sick and tired of some people here on the Reach forums. Everytime somebody comes up with a thread about a great idea (like this one) you get these noobs screaming:
OMG No pleez!1!1!!!11 Halo needz 2 stee teh same as alwaiz!

When are you people going to realise that Halo 3 and ODST really feel like 9 year old games? All because the main gameplay hasn't changed since Halo CE. When are you going to see that what was revolutionairy back in those days just doesn't cut it anymore with some new graphics put on top of it? Why are you so afraid about Halo changing? I'm onboard since the early days of Halo CE and I definatly hope we will finally get some new gameplay in Reach. Microsoft and Bungie keep coming up with awesome trailers showing more gritty warfare and everybody is excited, but when people want it in Reach a bunch of you start complaining. If Reach turns out to be exactly the same as the other Halos, its all thanks to you (and no, thats not a good thing) A Halo game CAN be fun even if its more gritty or more intense, or even if it does something that CoD also does. Halo needs to move forward to stay fresh AND to stay one of the best shooters out there.

On topic:

Yes I want EPIC battles, give me some all out warfare Bungie!

  • 11.17.2009 1:13 AM PDT

i agree with the OP, bungie just needs to kick it up a notch with the intense and dark, epic battles, i mean cmon if they are ever gonna take that (necessary) step, Reach is the perfect game.

P.S I hope youre listening bungie...we are hoping

Why use a nuke, and destroy valuable land, and resources and kill civilians, when you can send in super soldiers to take out the enemy with great force, without destroying the place?

  • 11.17.2009 1:38 AM PDT

Yeah as good as all the Halo games have obviously been, a definite lack to a feeling of war(even if it were just a small scale) around you has so far not been accomplished by Bungie

The adverts i think do more to hurt the series as well because just about anbody seeing these epic setting scenes comes away as disapointed - i know i was when i finished Halo3 despite it still being a good game

Bungie needs to step it up this time both regards to scale and duration of an epic campaign.Failing to do so this time will i'm sure be met more than just moans in the forums - it might actually cost them a fraction of fanbase that have given up on there ever being a truly epic Halo

Halo1 doesn't work quite as well in comparison to the sequels regards to their great combat refinements etc but where it really counts ie engrossing believable and long epic campaign, Halo1 laughs at what are essentially fairly horrible attempts as a whole

It's only Bungie that can manage full justice to an epic playing Reach game but they need to understand better some things like for example the scale of surrounding structures within a level, their sandbox and how more of it is required to exist at certain parts, better realised encounters that don't end suddenly just when you're having so much fun in them

There are countless other things you could poke fun at Bungie's level designers of course but providing they just provide a lot or really good and intense situations in a decent sized campaign then i'll be a lot happier this time

It's got to the point though that i don't think even the mighty Bungies will be able to pull this off - i sure hope so though as it's the only franchise i do truly adore

Hmmm. very good idea. Large battles are.. oh how do I put this? EPIC!

There NEEDS to be tons of dead bodies though. Why? Well in WWII like 3 million people died... in WWII! This is 2552! Against aleins! With Plasma weapons! Where's the war at people?

Sent the map 11/27. Hope it all goes well.

I personally believe we have never fought the Covenant in their full potential(excluding skulls). I blame the Flood personally because they kept interupting our fights and splitting it into a 3 sided war.

Halo 1: Stuck on a ring world. Cove don't want to glass due to it being very important to them. We fight on a ground against 1 vessel(Small Army), and got interrupted when Covies popped a can of flood on us.

Halo 2: Battle on Earth: Covies could easily glass us instead, but couldn't due to the Ark. We fought them on the ground and dealt with an Excavation force(small army with Super-Power Tools) who accidentally ran into us.

Delta Halo: We followed that same group and mopped them up, along with a Prophet. Fights were interuppted by the Elites getting betrayed by Brutes and the Flood making their way to High Charity and infecting everyone in there.

Halo 3: Covie has been split into 3 different factions: Truth's army led by Brutes, the Elite Seperatists, and the Dead and Infected. Truth's numbers where going down alot and only had enough men in his army just to slow MC down so he can fire the rings at the Ark's Control Room...if the flood didnt step in.

Maybe since there isn't no flood(as far as we know) on Reach, and they do have the intention of glassing the planet after finding what they were looking for(from info in Halo Wars), I think its safe to say that they will be fighting us like they mean buisness.

That, and we are using our old armor again! :D

It's going to be another year of waiting on nothing but hope

I'd like Bungie to drop some hints at the sort of scale we can expect this time round but then again that also worries me - i mean it's never like what you read in the Bungie updates ie Halo3's awesome sounding scale battles as described in the Bungie's updates, never did really felt all that awesome

I guess all we can do is keep our fingers crossed

epic: a bunch of people vs a bunch of people

something bungie left out in all their games

  • 11.17.2009 3:35 PM PDT

Reach could be like mag game with 256 players online. For example spartans vs. brutes/ gears vs. locust type multiplayer online. Halowars only in first-person.

I wish I was still legendary.

Epic battles would be good. Not dual scarabs, which gave the ILLUSION of being epic but was actually quite empty, but something better. Something like a battalion of marines holding out against some grunts and elites. The Covenant get killed, at which point 10 banshees fly overhead. From here they bombard the ground as more Covenant - and vehicles - arrive, and finally, when you arrive, a scarab appears and starts destroying everything in the area.
