Subject: REAL Actors in cutscenes...

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

Yes.

Eat raw meat.
Punch a bear in the face.

If you don't know who I am, the feeling is mutual.

I don't think so. Honestly? When I play a video game, I love the colour and wonder of a good story. Making everything a billion shades of brown and gray (Okay Mr. Fenix, you're gritty. Take a shower) just makes the whole story less apealing to me.

Halo 3 had vibrant colours that stood out, making staring out at the giant temple on the last level and looking across the rain-slicked city of New Mombasa fill me with awe. For me photo realism is creepy and weird and I'd rather not watch a guy who looks exactly like me or one of my best buddies get their head blown off. Having real actors in cutscenes I guess would make everything too real and remind me that those are actors, not the colourful characters I've grown to love (Exceptions would include Morgan Freeman and Nathan Fillion <3).

I understand that people want technology in games to advance, but there's time. Why throw an exact copy of you into a game when Wall-E is still being adorable? Why let a copy of you get tea-bagged by an exact copy of a toddler?

"It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me"

I liked Need for Speed: Most Wanted, but didn't like Undercover nearly as much. Why? Undercover felt to much like it was trying to be real. I wouldn't mind having some unockable cutscenes that are in real-world videos but not during the actual game.

I remember reading somewhere that if you make a character model too realistic then the player will reject it (I think it was on some mass effect 1 developer video?), so although the technology exists, developers don't do it because it just looks odd.

The more realistic a characters appearances are, the more obvious the mistakes in animation are, which leads to the rejection.

Exactly. The reason why NHL 06 is still the best looking NHL IMO. Stillscreenwise 2010 is superior, but the animation quality isn't anywhere near it. NHL 06 is much better looking all around.

Overall I think this is one of the biggest issues with current gen games. Although many games look amazing while still, on move they clearly look like games. Xbox1-gen had much more balanced and consistent visuals.

Driv3r is also a good example on topic. Textures and lighting are still amazing, but humans and smaller objects look really ugly. It also uses really good looking cutscenes, which strips me out of the game completely. Gameplay and cutscenes are like 2 different things.

So yes, keep cutscenes game-engine made.

What about actresses? Sexist.

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I wanna be
But now is not the time to cry
Now's the time to find out why
I think you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever

Umm....

...Nah

I assuming all of you saying yes to this are too young to remember the countless games that featured live actors during the time of the Genesis and Sega CD. Or maybe your not to young and the reason you never heard of them is because they were awful.

Every time you sneeze into an open Febreze portal the boner-tree drive shaft will spin into ketchup. But it doesn't stop at the number two pizza bell, not even close. It continues into the seventy eight minute long pile of green, sobbing cheese trains with no more butter, but more like the steak owed the tin cans some lovin'.

but Im wondering if its possible to allow for live action in cut scenes throughout the campaigns of games?

Is it a disc space issue? A console performance issue?
To the console it would be no different than a pre-rendered CGI cut scene. All it would need to do is play a video that had already been recorded elsewhere.

Sure, eventually we will be playing as a character filmed in live action
How is THIS supposed to be possible?

It's a money issue. Do you have any idea how expensive it would be to:

A) make the costumes
b) hire the necessary crew for the job
c) pay the actors
d) create the necessary CG graphics
e) create "action" sequences featuring explosions and such (especially when it comes to action games like Halo)
f) secure locations
g) rent/buy production equipment
h) hire stunt doubles for said "action" sequences

I can go on, but I think you get the idea. It's not feasible for a video game. Bug budget movie... yes, video game... no.

And don't bring up the live action sequences in the Command and Conquer series, those were all single location shoots.

And another point, how would the transition look from video game to live action? It would look absurd. Command and Conquer was only able top do it because the cutscenes took place in some unknown command center.

In conclusion, it's not going to happen.
