Since armor seems to be a hot topic in Halo 3 there's no doubt about armor being in Halo: Reach. In this thread I will explain how armor will almost never get old.

Has anyone ever played Need For Speed: Carbon, Or Need For Speed: ProStreet? If you have then you must know about this autosculpt feature, If you don't know about this feature I will breifly tell you about it. Autosculpt is a feature that allows you to increase the depth, width, and the shape of objects in game, You could make armor any way you wanted to just as you could make your car look any way in Need for Speed. This would be a great idea for bungie to increase the entertainment in their game.

In Halo: Reach autosculpt would allow you to edit already existing armor, For example Hyabusa in Halo 3. You could edit how big you want your viser to be or the angle of the viser. For the chestplate you could choose if you wanted it to be more poked out or if you want it to be indented into the armor. The shoulder pads, you could choose if you wanted the flaps to be more open or more closed or even how far out you want them to go.

So bungie, This would be a great addition to Halo: Reach. Take this into consideration, Either use the autosculpt or an equivilent.

This is a little video of autosculpt in Need for Speed: Carbon, Just imagine it is Halo Armor.

Mm.... Maybe...

i like the idea of using the custom texture mode, but reshaping is out of the question

I speak the truth, and truth speaks itself.
The lies disguise what you despise.
Run. Flee and be, what you've always dreamed.
What happens now won't matter later.
What you see will not be, nor what you imagine will not happen.
The end is close, so take your dose.

That's a little too complex for armor.

How's about just a bunch of different parts?

I really don't want kids making armor that matches their "grenade fade from left" emblem.

You wouldn't be able to change the height, width, and etc. of the armor in general, But you would be able to change the shape of the features such as the viser, chest plate details, and the flaps on hyabusa.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

I like the flexibility, but I don't think it could be implemented without harming gameplay.

1. People wouldn't have each other's armors, so at the beginning of the game the host would need to download the custom armor from each person using one, and then upload it to each player in the game.

2. How could hitboxes stay accurate with this kind of modification?

3. rendering custom skins x16 + bodies on the ground sounds extreme.

I think full armor sculpting would cause to many problems for the devs to implement in the game effectively. Perhaps they could add a details section to armor customization that would allow you to edit little details of the armor, such as attaching small pieces of gear to the armor via hard points or changing the color of the visor.

1.) You wouldn't really be downloading them individually, because its just modified a little its not "New" armor just edited, Like an emblem.

2.) It's your choice if you want to be an easy target.

3.) ???????

Every single emblem permutation is stored on the Halo disk.

If you make a custom version of something, like a map, it will only be where you save it manually.

That is why it would need to be uploaded/downloaded accross the game, every game unless you played those exact people before, and they had your armor downloaded.

And since you would play thousands of people, armors would have to be deleted to make space for new ones all the time.

And assuming Reach is 16 players, the game would have to render up to 16 custom armors, plus the dead bodies left on the ground. That sounds like a lot of strain on the system.

Autosculpting is so much fun. There should be a tutorial for it though. A begginer Veterans mode etc. I'm gonna go on Carbon and make a car!

  • 11.18.2009 7:10 PM PDT

I know exactly what you mean and that would be pretty awesome! If you havn't noticed though all the new Halo realated games are going back in the Halo timeline so you would think the armor would look more older looking in design but instead the armor is getting better and more up-to-date armor!? Like the ODST and Recon armor is older than all the Halo 3 permutations, if you go by the Halo timeline, but it looks so awesome compared to the other armor! So Halo Reach should contain some pretty awesome armor permutations that will blow your mind but make you think why it looks better when its supposed to be older than Halo 3 armor like the Mark IV and Mark V!? Let me tell you Bungie has got me thinking about this but hey who cares because if its new and looks tight we are all good with it!

No.

Gameplay will be unbalanced

93% of statistics are lies. Formerly Xfire Grunt. Unfortunately, you can't change the WLID for your BNET account, so I had to create an alternate account. My other WLID was spam city (and it was my e-mail account too).

Racing games don't have hitboxes bro.

I'm fine with paint, but hit boxes.... everybody smart would make a tiny character. Even if the hitbox is same ~ the hitbox on an invisible guy is the same and he's definitely harder to shoot at.

I really don't want kids making armor that matches their "grenade fade from left" emblem.

I hate how people think only kids use that symbol. I have seen more "adults" with it then kids. The kids had to get it from somewhere ;).

So would every possible armor permutation. I'm not entirely sure how it would work, but each player could have a value attatched to their player for the different asthetic elements of their player. Say you wanted your visor to be a bit more narrow, you could assign a value to that. I'm not sure how plausible that is, but I can see a way around to having to download and render 16 player models.
