Subject: do you think you should be able to use the katana as an actual weapon

There is nothing wrong with Halo:Reach. We all just have our gripes about everything we don't like. Not liking something doesn't make it broken.

Sure. In Customs I mean.

It would be funny for screenshots and custom maps. Just make it a re-skin of the Energy sword. You'd only need to change the sound when you first pick it up to something more metallic.

If they can re-skin the Hammer into a Golf club, no reason they can't reskin the Energy Sword into a Katana.

Some posters should be banned for stupid posts. Unfortunately, because of my prejudice against idiots, I'd never be a good Mod.

Lucky you.

No, not the katana. But I want to be able to use the swords/knives on the campaign shield as an UNSC counterpart to the Energy Sword.

In the days of old, there were legends of a land long lost to time. This land was known as Ranna'Mor. Ranna'Mor was said to contain in its borders 7 warriors. These warriors had once unleashed a veritable hell upon the ancient world, until they were locked away. My name is Toriad, and I am one of those warriors. Our return is approaching. Do not run away, do not cower in fear; take solace in your final days, for that is all we can do. -Legend of Ranna'Mor

Again, I present the following scenario:
Steel vs. Energy Shields: Who will win?

1. Don't use all caps. It makes you look like an r-tard.

2. While a Sci-fi video game, the actions and re-actions of the objects and characters follow the basic laws of physics and common sense. Further, it has been states in the fiction and depicted in the games that bullets have a though time penetrating energy shields. A knife or sword would break before it penetrated any flesh.

1. Only as retarded as your own 'NO FUN ALLOWED. ONLY REALISM' logic.

2. Video game. Video game. Video game. Video game. If Bungie said so, tomorrow all Brutes would look like Goldfish wearing fluorescent pink armor and Tutus. It follows no such sense of realism. Realism left the Halo series the first time the protagonist jumped twice his height and tossed a frag like Mike Vick on steroids.

It is a videogame and because of this AND because Bungie can do whatever the hell they wanted with it FOR THAT REASON ALONE it follows no sense of realism.

Realism gets the backseat for fun here. Some of the guns work realistically, most of the objects fall along with gravity. Ends there.

By your logic, All energy weapons should almost instantly kill ALL UNSC vehicle as they are made of metal.

Your argument is invalid because you are trying to press that realism is the most important factor in a Videogame.

What would be the point of that? seems to much like Cod like unlocking wepons

I actually enjoy unlocking weapons, it would give me a reason to level up.

and a reason to skew gameplay in favor of people who have been playing longer. no CoD in Halo!

It was not skipped. It was ignored. What the books say are meaningless if Bungie chooses to change things. Bungie makes the rules, not the books.

It isn't like I don't see were you are coming from, but I'm still going to give you a hard time about it. Videogames aren't SRS BIZNESS and Canon is only what Bungie says is Canon.

If they really wanted, the blade could simply be made of a metal that Shields aren't particularly effective at blocking out and viola, you have an excuse. Christ, they could color it green and suddenly Shields are pierced by kryptonite.

Realistically, I don't think the weapon should be its own weapon. I think it should be EXACTLY like the 7-wood is. A weapon reskin.

Just make the energy sword look just like a Katana. MAybe, if they felt like it, change the sounds. Then it doesn't matter about Canon because it is just an extra for forge and whatnot.

To start, I was talking about gameplay. In the games, the plasma rifle strips away energy shields faster than the assault rifle (as an example). Second, the books were commissioned by Bungie. Hell, "Contact Harvest" was written by Bungie employee Joseph Staten.

Let's look at the games now. It take two melee attacks with fists or a normal weapon to kill an opponent. It would be the same with a sword or knife (one hit to get rid of shields, one to kill). You want to talk gameplay, there you go.

The armor permutations don't effect gameplay. Unlocking weapons at different levels would.

Okay. You see, what I am saying is:

All of your post. Every single word. Means absolutely nothing if Bungie were to suddenly decide 'This OP is right, we'll add a Knife/Katana/Whatever melee weapon to the game.

Nothing anyone says and no logic from the game that you can present to me changes a damn thing. Realism can and will take a backseat for fun in a videogame. ESPECIALLY a game like Halo, which already uses only a small amount of realism (What is usually needed/wanted to make a shooter play well.)

That said, again. In all honesty, I believe a Katana/Combat Knife/whatever should simply be included as a re-skin of the existing Energy Sword like the 7-Wood.

I know. I just wanted to say that.

I happen to agree however. Level = Loot needs to stay out of the Halo war machine. I don't think I'd care for it.

Although I'm a bit torn...I adore the levels of customization I get before a match in CoD...So I don't think I'd hate the idea.

But I can't say I'd think It'd work. Not unless the entire Trueskill system was disconnected from rank A'la CoD style...

But I think hiding trueskill in the game itself can't hurt.

But I like seeing my progress.

Big ol' chain of butts. You'd think I was opening a strip club.

That said, when Bungie incorporates weapons, they have a place and purpose. A melee weapon like a sword would have no place in the UNSC, and the combat knife is ineffective unless against unshielded enemies. Halo originally had a sword, which became part of the campaign shield. This was when Elites had no shields, and every soldier was a Spartan.

Bungie tries to make Halo feel realistic, and a UNSC melee weapon does not fall under this category.

Meh. I'm not even thinking about story. Nor Matchmaking. I care nothing for canon. I am approaching this idea as a Custom game/Forge mode additive only.

I think maybe you should too. Gets easy to see the fun that can be had with some of this stuff.

I stick to my idea. I think it would be a fun re-skin for the energy sword.

It would act like one and as far as the game is concerned it IS one. It would just look like the katana. Add it to a map in forge to use it in customs. It's a simple concept.

Put your pitchfork down a second and approach it without pretending anyone who thinks its cool wants the story to be crap. I want it for the same reasons we have the 7-wood. Multiplayer fun and randomness.

Are you starting to see my angle? I'm not trolling/giving you a hard time at this point. I just think you are approaching it wrong at the moment and might be able to like it better approaching it from a passive angle like my own.

I guess it could be fun for custom games and such. I don't use that function very often, so I rarely think of things relating to it.

I realized that when you didn't mention it. It was at that point I just stopped trolling and straight up said what I was trying to troll with.

Most of the 'I want X as a weapon' should be (Unless OP specifically wants it elsewere with his post) approached from the whole 'In forge, as an option' angle.

Personally, I think it would be neat to have MORE weapons and if they match the functionality of another gun they can be made as re-skins to add a little spice and such to customs and screen shots.

Re'skins in forge can hardly break balance unless the weapon they are skinned FROM is imbalanced. They can never break canon as they exist in Forge and Customs.

Personally, I think there needs to be four re-skins of the sword:

Foam finger
Katana (Or, alternatively, a Longsword like a Medieval Knight)
Large Spatula
Combat Knife

Why? Fun. It is just FUN that way.

Personally, I think there needs to be four re-skins of the sword:

Foam finger
Katana (Or, alternatively, a Longsword like a Medieval Knight)
Large Spatula
Combat Knife

Why? Fun. It is just FUN that way.

pointless fun that requires a lot of work.
creating the models, textures, sounds, animations, behavior, balancing and more things I can't think of.
I'd rather have the studio focus on getting things right (long campaign, better networking etc) than silly weapons and risks of having them delay the game.
