Phantom's better designed, the Spirit doesn't make much tactical sense except for smashing Hunters on either side of a column.

It makes sense on the cannon side though since phantoms were not in use by the covenant then. But it seem bungie dosnt really care for cannon these days *Cough ODSTBRUTEWITHARMOR Cough*

ODST brutes having armour isn't canon?
Spirits would be canon though for Reach as far as I know (do we know when the Phantom was introduced into the Covenant?) just sort of forgot this was the Reach forum.

  • 11.18.2009 3:14 AM PDT

i happen to know that these times phantoms were replacing the spirits but the covenant were using them both not to let the materials used for them go to waste

ODST was set during halo 2 back befor the brutes had power armor and if Phantoms are better than spirits why didnt the covenant use them in halo 1, thus leading common sense to think that phantom where developed after or during the event of halo 1 and brought into action around the time earth was attacked the first time (halo 2) but of corse this could be wrong.

I believe that the Covenant were using the Spirits at the time of Reach. Some Phantoms may have been in service though.

The spirits for sure.

They have many more tactical usages.

They can use gravlifts or use the side doors and they can be used to create good cover when crashed.

I've always thought the Phantom looks nice and sleek.

Go by the books, not the games... The only Brutes that didn't have power armor were in Tarturus's pack and tought it showed weakness.

In the days of old, there were legends of a land long lost to time. This land was known as Ranna'Mor. Ranna'Mor was said to contain in its borders 7 warriors. These warriors had once unleashed a veritable hell upon the ancient world, until they were locked away. My name is Toriad, and I am one of those warriors. Our return is approaching. Do not run away, do not cower in fear; take solace in your final days, for that is all we can do. -Legend of Ranna'Mor

The Brutes with armor was a retro-active addition in ODST. Since the Brutes were added very late during Halo 2's developement, Bungie didn't have a lot of time to create distinctive armor sets. That was the idea of having the Halo 3 brutes in ODST.

On the subject of the OP, I would say add Spirit Dropships, mainly for the sake of the canon.

I have the first 3 books (fall of reach, flood, first strike) and rented contact harvest from the library I dont remeber anything about tarturus' pack in them, unless its in any other book, then im not going to say anything that I think is wrong.
Also bugie them selves have said that the armor was a sign that the where moving up in the ranks of the covenant. now can we please move on to the topic at hand Spirit or Phantom!

There is nothing wrong with Halo:Reach. We all just have our gripes about everything we don't like. Not liking something doesn't make it broken.

Or better, put the two together into one, call it the Sphantom... I honestly think also that we should mostly see Spirits and the Phantoms should first appear in a Epic cut scene battle, tearing people apart.

  • 11.18.2009 5:38 AM PDT

The Spirits were used in Halo 1 because Bungie hadn't designed the Phantom yet. The Phantom was designed because the Spirit was inferior for gameplay, and made less sense in combat. The passengers were exposed for a long time, making them easy targets for sticking etc. The Phantom has been used for a long time; there were Phantoms in the fleet that attacked Reach, as we see in the Graphic Novel.

The brutes always had power armor (read Contact Harvest). The elites just forbid them since the elites are higher rank and wouldn't allow them to use power armor in their presence or the prophets (all changed when Truth began his plan to replace the elites with brutes).

The chieftain from halo 2 was in Contact Harvest, and the brutes had their power armor in the book. The reason they didn't wear it in halo 2 was they weren't a major part of the military.

Brute made perfect sense for ODST, Truth placing them so when the ark portal was uncovered they would kill the Elites and secure it for him, and thus they would take all their weapons and armor with them.

1.Arkham Asylum, 2.Mass Effect, 3.Halo CE, 4.Mass Effect 2, 5.Halo 2, 6.Splinter Cell Double Agent, 7.Gears of War 2, 8.Medievil, 9.Oblivion, 10.Crash Team Racing

Both. A lot more Spirits than Phantoms.

It wouldn't make sense to have tons of Phantoms while HaloCE has none. But they could be more expensive to create or still in small numbers so there are few of them on the biggest fight so far, on Reach. The battle of Halo is small stuff.

Actually I read spirits were used in Halo CE, canon wise because they didn't expect heavy ground fighting.

I'm thinking about people who haven't read the books, including me.

For us it would make much more sense to have both with Spirits dominating in numbers than anything else.

Even in the books, Spirits are used up through the events of First Strike (the 3rd book which tells the events after Halo 1 before Halo 2). So really, the Spirit would still make more sense.

  • 11.18.2009 7:12 AM PDT

Yes, but I wouldn't be disappointed to see a few Phantoms in there somewhere.

I personally prefer Phantoms, while Spirits are a good design in terms of art, as a ingame drop ship, they are inferior to the phantom, the only advantage a spirit can have over a phantom, is that it can possibly carry and deploy more vehicles than a phantom.

As for "canon", the reason you don't see any phantoms, or spectres is because they were not made or properly developed when Halo CE was released, yet the books prove that they did exist in Halo 1.

As for usage of these dropships, I think Phantoms should be used in major assault/space battles, like city levels, and such.

As for Spirits, they should be used in levels where the covenant are merely scouting for things/artifacts, and not hunting humans.

The only time you should see both at the same time, is either in cutscenes, or in a Covenant Ship level.

Oh yes, the Halo 2 Phantom and the Halo 3 Phantom are a bit different, the Halo 2 Phantom has only two entrances, one at the back, and the gravity lift, it can deploy troops via gravity lift, as well as easily carrying up to two ghosts or a Wraith.

The Halo 3 Phantom as multiple entrances, and it deploys troops similar to the way a Spirit deploys troops, however, the gravity lift is seldom used.

Final level of ODST, a group of Phantoms fly past you in the Scorpion part, they are carrying Wraiths on the undercarriage.
