Final level of ODST, a group of Phantoms fly past you in the Scorpion part, they are carrying Wraiths on the undercarriage.

Lots actually. On Tsavo, Storm, The Ark, The Covenant... Firefight

My troll sense is tingling.

The spirits for sure.

They have many more tactical usages.

They can use gravlifts or use the side doors and they can be used to create good cover when crashed.

Sounds like a phantom.

Phantoms look way cooler, but spirits are canon

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

The Spirit, this is during the Sangheili supremacy over the other races of the Covenant Military. The Spirit is a Sangheili vehicle.

Sent the map 11/27. Hope it all goes well.

From my point of view, we only dealt with one ship in Halo 1. My best reason for seeing only the Spirit in the first one is because thats the only type of transport they have carried with them at the time.

If anything, we might see a combination of both of them being in use.

  • 11.18.2009 9:36 AM PDT

The spirit sucked. They shouldn't waste our time with it, it's far too easy to take out half the enemy forces with a sniper rifle or a few grenades (which is WHY the next generation dropships were developed).
And going by canon, the Covenant IS a military. Which means that, for better or for worse, some armadas are simply going to be more well-equipped than others. You can't give all your forces brand new equipment as soon as it's produced, it's not logistically possible. So therefore, i'm sure that the covies will use the new dropships more, but spirits will make an appearance when Covenant are occupied elsewhere.
That's following canon :P

Why are you reading my signature? Who actually opens these things and reads them!

And as always, SEND ME A PM. Please. Or really bad things will happen to you.

I'm sure we will see the Spirit along side the Phantom. The spirit can't drop off vehicles so that will probably be when we see the phantom.

Go Rams and Missouri!

I think that the Phantom looks a lot cooler. It's very sleek and stylish, and sounds a lot cooler. However, the Spirit had a better way of releasing the troops, but overall I go with the Phantom.

The Spirits were used in Halo 1 because Bungie hadn't designed the Phantom yet. The Phantom was designed because the Spirit was inferior for gameplay, and made less sense in combat. The passengers were exposed for a long time, making them easy targets for sticking etc. The Phantom has been used for a long time; there were Phantoms in the fleet that attacked Reach, as we see in the Graphic Novel.

Logic = Win.

Phantom's better designed, the Spirit doesn't make much tactical sense except for smashing Hunters on either side of a column.

And this had me laughing for quite a while.

It was awesome.

Either you are using sarcasm, or you might be hinting at a new feature in the game.

Interesting... it almost relates to what Urk said in the weekly update about something "so awesome, so new."

I wish I was still legendary.

Canonically it could be both. Spirits aren't exactly... combat units though, so it's likely they won't be seen in larger battles unless no phantoms are close by.

Both were used throughout the war. Phantoms became more prevailant during the Events of Halo 2 and 3.

Proof that Phantoms were around during the events of Halo CE:
Proof Part 1
Proof Part 2

Your friendly and eccentric Sangheili forum-poster. :)

Spirit. Phantom didn't even exist during the days of Halo CE, nevermind Reach. Either that, or it was that advanced, even for the Covenant, that it was a rare sight. Personally I'd like to see both if that's the case.

Look at my post.

Already have, but that was after I posted. But now that's proven, I can safely say that I want them both in Halo Reach. Phantoms are tougher than Spirits (well, realisticly they are, since we didn't get to destroy dropships until Halo 3), so we could get Spirits in the beginning levels of Halo Reach, then as you progress things get tougher, and Phantoms start coming in.

I personally see Spirits as an equivlant to the UNSC Albatross: Mainly a cargo/Heavy Vehicle (Locusts/Wraiths) transport that can carry infantry as a bonus (As a slapped on feature).

Phantoms, in my view, are the true equivlant to Pelicans: Made just for infantry, but can also carry light vehicles (Ghosts and Spectres).

mabe the covenant troops that went to halo only had spirits the phantom cold have existed but the covenet ship near halo didnt have any

ODST was set during halo 2 back befor the brutes had power armor and if Phantoms are better than spirits why didnt the covenant use them in halo 1, thus leading common sense to think that phantom where developed after or during the event of halo 1 and brought into action around the time earth was attacked the first time (halo 2) but of corse this could be wrong.

Actually, no. Brutes had the armor, but Tartarus's brutes were not allowed to wear it. Brutes have had power armor since Harvest.
