They should improve on the meleeing. Such as make it that if you run or jump and melee someone, it is stronger than just standing still. Also give different guns different melee strength. Such as the smaller guns should have weaker but faster beatdowns (such as magnum) compared to bigger guns, who should have slower but stronger beatdowns (rockets). guns like the bruteshot and spiker should have the strongest beatdowns because they have blades on the front. What do you guys think?

There is nothing wrong with Halo:Reach. We all just have our gripes about everything we don't like. Not liking something doesn't make it broken.

Different damage? Ok. Makes sense honestly.

Aerial beatdown and such? I fail to really see the point. It sounds cool, sure, but it is unnecessary.

I never tested it, but didn't the spiker/brute shot do more melee damge in Halo 3?

regular melee does 70 damage.
brute weapons (all of them except hammer) do 72.
(official figures).

and to OP:
you're suggesting melee to be like in ... hum... the best game of the trilogy so far with the best maps.
aka H2 melee.
and I can't agree more.

Hn. I haven't played Halo 2 in sooooo long. Hell, I wasn't even an online participant at the time. Is it really that much better working?

I am only doubtful because I wouldn't know what it is like in action. To me it just seems to promote bunny-hopping like an idiot at close range (something that tends to get annoying. Bunny hop + AR/Beatdown combo = annoying)

BR and all, that is pretty normal. But promoting the same with weapons like the mauler and AR would mean a whole lot more really cheap deaths out there at the hands of some squeaky guy named 'XxXI Iz R1pp1nXxX' or whatever.

I would definitely love for momentum-based-melees to return in Halo: Reach. It was so much harder in Halo 2 to get a kill with an objective because you had to be falling for it to be a one-hit-kill. In Halo 3, you could be standing still and still kill with one hit. I believe that when Bungie gave the ball/flag holder a better chance to defend themselves in Halo 3, it hurt team play for the team holding the objective. Momentum based melees also increase the incentive to reach higher ground since your melees will do more damage if you jump down to an enemy.

Also, yes, all brute weapons deal more melee damage as well as the rocket launcher and fuel-rod-gun. There may be others I am forgetting about, but those cover most of the weapons in question.

if your jumping and as your falling on someone you beat them, your gonna have more force (momentum)

it is higher but not noticeable. they should lower the 'general' melee damage and then give 'bonus' damage depending on momentum and the gun held

It is a game. The physics are whatever the developers say they are.

If Bungie wants Frag grenades to fall UP that is how physics works.

But yeah, I understand you. I'm still a little meh about it, but I never had the chance to get any real time with Halo 2 online.

halo 2 is very similar and yet different from H3.
a regular melee (standing still) would do maybe 50dmg.
running melee would do 60.
jumping melee would do 70.

being able to press A before melee was a decisive move in a fight, and it required being able to multitaks (fight, dodge, calculate damage you do, jump then melee, all the same time).
it separated the noobs that just AR+melee from the good people who could do more.

it sucks you never played that game online. I found it so much more balanced than H3, and the maps were a million time better. literally.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

It was ACTUALLY a factor in Halo CE and 2, one of the things I thought was insane about it.

In Halo CE or 2, Flag, and Ball melee damage were 2 hit kill (regular was 3), but if you ran and leapt through the air, you could kill them in one swift move (it was epic).

  • 11.18.2009 9:22 AM PDT

Jumping before meleeing in Halo 2 was used mainly for objectives. To get the jumping damage bonus, you had to reach the apex of your jump before hitting the melee button. Jumping makes you an easy target since you cannot change direction, and it was not really an advantage to jump for the purpose of having your melee deal more damage for most weapons. Objectives were an exception since the damage bonus from a falling melee was a one-hit-kill.

Yeah. My family was simply in a terrible bind when that game was still big. I am ashamed to admit H3 was my first real online experience in the Halo world.

I played a lot of H2 with friends, but never online and we were all terrible at the game. Most of my time was on Campaign.

Anyway, I guess I see how it would be cooler. I support the idea. The more I think about it, the more potential it has (At least until it is adopted by the crowd that relies on beatdowns and cheapness for kills)

Yeah, I can see that. Although trading kills ought to stay around in case your opponent is smart enough/able to match you in damage.

If you both have Brute shot, you both jump, you both melee and you both connect at once there is NO reason NOT to trade kills. It just works better then relying on connection every time.

there should be some 1 for 1 kills, but in halo 3 there are way too many.
