I believe that the OP is suggesting the Chief is at Reach in the Legendary Ending (despite the stars, sun, and surface not matching up at all), he flashes back to a battle he didn't take part in at all (the ground Battle of Reach) from the trailer, and then at the end of the game, Cortana "dies" from Rampancy, even though the canon has established that smart A.I.s don't die from rampancy, they are merely "put down" after a 7 year timeframe to avoid potential rampancy before it takes ill effect.
No, I believe what he is saying is that at the Legendary ending, the Chief is adrift in space. While adrift he is thinking back on how Reach falls(or dreaming in cryo sleep). Him thinking back on it will be the missions that we play. Doing this will allow it to still be a prequel yet still leave the option of giving us more info on where the Chief is at the legendary ending of Halo 3.
Now, what I don't understand is when the OP keeps referring to the Chief having lost Cortana or needing to find and save her. The legendary ending of Halo 3 clearly shows that Cortana is adrift in space with the chief. She will be the one to wake him from cryo sleep. So when the chief wakes up Cortana will be right there.
