Halo: Heretic or Hero---An Elite's Story
Choose your own destiny

It just seems right now that Halo's campaign is a bit too calm. Instead of 'Jesus, there is an eight foot tall alien reptile creature with a searing hot sword ready to slice my neck' it is more like 'Oh, cool, another one. Whatever.'

That being said, here is my list of things that could be darker and more frightening.

-Enemies (especially Elites...they need to be more...evil)

-Vehicles (Wraiths and Scarabs)

- Darker Environments (No more cartoon-esque Halo)

-The feeling of being on your own, like a one man army. That feeling was not broadcasted enough in Halo 3.

More will be added if I hear a good idea.

Discuss.

They have a darkness setting in Halo 3. If you turn it down a little it makes everything look a little more dramatic. One side effect is that you can't see.

Wait, what? I'm talking about Campaign, not the FX system in Forge.

Or is there a setting that makes gameplay lighting different?

On the contrary, I think this was broadcasted too much in Halo 3. Like most of the community agrees, no more one man army. You've gotta feel vulnerable, like you're fighting a losing battle.

Plus, you've got Spartan friends now. That should take away from the "you against the universe" vibe.

Yeah, it is under screen settings in the Start menu.

Exactly. What I meant is that you feel like every step of the way will be a struggle in Halo CE, whereas in Halo 3 you are just an unstoppable human-tank hybrid.

Your friendly and eccentric Sangheili forum-poster. :)

Agreed on the dark and evil idea.
We need more time alone like the days of Halo CE, no marines around... Just you, your gun and a crap load of enemies.

Just because halo if full of color dose not mean it's cartoony which grated halo 3 is pretty cartoony but take halo CE for example. Lighting was brilliant and believable and plasma was devastating. even the night parts in Halo CE the ambient light provides enough to respect the art work and see what you are doing.

however a lot of what you rare talking about is game-play immersion. the game dose not have to be dark to be immersive.
stuff like double vision upon a near by explosion or melee. better sound effects and animations.

QFT

Anyways, the Covenant need to have all of those bright colors. They signify Rank, and give them an alien feel.

"Nah. As long as the prince of darkness is okay with it. I am too. But thanks anyway, Mr. Velvet Spider."

xD

No, I don't want that GOW look for Halo. That's just not Halo to me and I applaud Bungie for not taking that route in their games.

No holds bar killing!

Sounds cool, but some of those things like the color is what makes Halo unique.

I don't think you guys understand...not 'darker' as in pretty colors, 'darker' as in more intense, scary, etc etc.

Jesus loves you, but everyone else thinks you're a twat.

one thing that iv always loved about halo is the colour pallet they use, so many games are using a real gray look which kinda gets old (IMO), sure grays can set the mood for the seen but when i go to play a game im playing for fun not to feel a depressing mood

  • 11.20.2009 6:04 PM PDT

I'd like a darker Halo.

You know, the original designs for the Elites included a tail. It was removed because of awkward positioning when sitting in vehicles.

And the Hunters need to be more like walking tanks, rather than a bigger version of the Brute. Kind of like the Tank from Left 4 Dead, but with a fuel rod cannon attached.

I don't understand why you're looking at my profile. Just back off, and nobody gets hurt, okay?

well originally the elites were going to have tails, but the idea was scrapped in the design process of H1 when the problem of where it would go when the elite was driving a vehicle. between the legs? no thanks.

Aye.

I adore Bungie because they aren't using the hyper-realistic/coffee filter palette which is becoming all too common.

I think if the difficulty curve was a bit more predictable we'd be on to something - because going from, say, The Ark to Cortana (Halo 3) was going from super-soldier to gloried sprinter.

I think the supersoldier/one man army feel is part of the experience but I do think there needs to be a bit more of a lonesome atmosphere.

(1)the only way to escape death is death itself.
(2) pwn the world bungie
(3) never give in to BS, your always going good in your own way.

yeah making it darker would be nice, but not too dark. Just something that would take the oringinal halo 3 color and make it like a combination of gloomy and juicy. That would be good, maybe a little more shadier
