DISCLAIMER: All this thread is asking for is for the weapons to be louder, and have more of a bang.
I hope that this time around, the weapons sound...real? Yes, real.

Assault rifle
The AR fires the 7.62mm round, the same as the AK-47, and thus, should sound somewhat similar.

SMG
I do not know the caliber of the SMG in Halo, but I guess it would be safe to make it sound much like the MP5 which fires a 9mm pistol round. And the video also includes silenced MP5s firing.

BR
The BR fires a 9mm rifle round, and since I don't think that any round of that sort exists, the H&K G3 is the best bet, firing the full size .308 round (7.62mm)

Shotgun
Shotgun shell size is determined by gauges. While I myself do not fully understand the system, I do know that the smaller the gauge, the larger the shell so a 24 gauge is the smallest, and a 1 gauge is the largest. The Halo shotgun is an 8 gauge shotgun, and I could not find a video of one, so I went for the next best thing: AA-12, fully automatic, 12 gauge shotgun.

Sniper
Apparently the Halo sniper fires a 14.5mm round, which is larger than a .50 cal, which is 12.7mm, or half an inch.

Magnum
The Halo magnum is a .50 caliber pistol. "Nuff said"

For some reason, every video of guns firing are low audio quality.

Bungie, please beef up the weapons in the game.

Id rather them work on more important things than gun sounds.

Don't get me wrong, I agree. But the team is divided up among those who design levels, make the textures, design the multiplayer system, make the sound effects, etc.

This thread is talking directly to the sound department, not to Bungie as a whole.

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed, knowing better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives: not men, for flags.
"The Next War"

I somewhat agree with this. However, you have to take into the account that it is 500 years in the future. We have no clue what new developments they could have made in rifling, powder, gas release systems, bullet materials, etc.

Also, I would like to point out that on your shotgun post, there are several gauges of shotgun, including 410, 24, 20, 16, 12, and 10. But there is not an 8 gauge that I am currently aware of.

So nobody knows for sure what the weapons of Halo would actually sound like.

Interesting videos, I can imagine the sounds of those current guns being tweaked a bit to fit the weapons for reach.

However, I think Halo CE shotgun sound is already perfect, along with the Halo 2 BR sound.

(1)the only way to escape death is death itself.
(2) pwn the world bungie
(3) never give in to BS, your always going good in your own way.

yeah, focus more on the stuff that matters. The sound can be as believe as it wants to be, that won't matter if the gameplay sux

Yeah, but sound adds to gameplay. The rocket launcher and the sniper wouldn't be as fun to use if they sounded like toys.

yeah, i want them to sound real. I also don't want the entire focus of the game (especially this late in development) being the sound, they already perfected almost all of the sound for the weapons in the game. They sound real so I don't get why we are even posting about this. I don't want the assault rifle to sound like an ak-47 because its centuries in the future and people that far in the future would say stuff like "what's an ak-47" and would have no clue what it would even remotely sound like.

I believe the sound of weapons is one of the least important things in a game. The story and and gameplay can make it or break it.

When you fire the Sentinel Beam, it should play the Numa Numa song instead of that pissing noise.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

ShotgunThese are 3.5" 12 Guage magnum shot shells.

Magnum
.50 Auto Express desert eagle.

Sniper RifleThis is a 25mm cannon, so about like this.

AR should sound like either of these.

BR:
There is no current cartridge that matches this designation (9.5mm x 40 mm).

One of the closest is the 10mm auto, which is a pistol cartridge. The BR should be louder than this one.

Man is born free but everywhere he is in chains.

I LOVED the way that the AR sounded in Halo CE. It isn't much to complain about in Halo 3, but I'd like another epic-sounding AR in Reach.

If we are still using bullets 500 years from now, I doubt anything else would have changed a lot.

Apparently, there are some 8 gauge shotguns, but they are old models.

Scratch what I said before.

This is the assault rifle sound I want.
