Dual wielding is controversial topic, and it's probably too late, but here's my view:

1. When dual wielding, you get 2 seperate or overlapping crosshairs, but you move them with the same stick. This means that dual wielding is more about shooting at multiple targets (and big targets) instead of spraying 2 weapons at single enemies. Dual wielding is actually a different "mode" with its own purposes

Examples:SMG, Magnum, Sword

They would be especially useful in campaign with the large enemy squads standing in front of you, but could also be some use in multiplayer when facing multiple enemies at once.

Halo2/3 style combined crosshair system could be an option (maybe press D-Pad down) but I don't know if it would tamper with balance again.

Another idea (This could really work with swords):
Posted by: cyclopsdias
i think however for the different crosshairs to be useful they shall both move on the same direction but will have an auto lock for targets in proximity.not a super lock just something for them to work independently of each other

2. You can holster both of the dual-wieldable weapons when you switch weapons. Grenades should be placed visibly on your hip. This means that holstering weapons takes space from grenades.
- 0 Thigh holstered weapons = space for 8 grenades
- 1 Thigh holstered weapons = space for 6 grenades
- 2 Thigh holstered weapons = space for 4 grenades
(It would be an interesting detail if headshot weapons could explode the grenades once the target has no shields)

3. All dual-wieldable weapons should have "tool" funcionalities. Not just be clone-damage weapons.
- Needler: 1 is weak, 2 is overkill
- Plasmarifle: Freeze and blind effects plus shield draining
- Plasmapistol: Plasmarifle effects plus vehicle EMP charge
- Magnum is longer range headshot weapon
- SMG is the basic bullethose
- With 2 swords you can block and attack multiple targets much better and faster. Individual hit is slightly weaker.
(- Mauler is Shotgun)
(- Spiker nails people to nearby objects and walls and it does lasting damage. You suffer more damage if you go against the spike thus making the wound bigger)

So all in all:
Pros:
+ No nerfed damage when dual wielded
+ 2 weapons is directed against multiple (or bigger) targets
+ Ability to holster both weapons
+ Strategic Combos
Cons:
- Slower or impossible reloading
- Weaker melee when dual wielding
- Takes room from grenades
- Can't throw grenades

Eric Mason, DivinePistol

I like your ideas, but i think you should be able to control both weapons with both joysticks while dual wielding. You would have to stand still while doing this but a press of a button on the d-pad will quickly allow you to move around again.
so if there are two enemys you can aim occordingly and before you dual weild get into a solid cover.

*NOTE: you can still crouch/stand which makes it easy to get into cover while poping out occasionaly to shoot. And taking into effect your pros and cons.

I say no duel wielding. I know Halo isnt supposed to be about realism, but deul wielding just bothers me to no end. There is no way you can duel wield with any accuracy in real life, and thus shouldn't be in the game, but hey, I like my realism. Plus I like never do it.

Great ideas! Especially the one about the grenades. I hope there will be new weapons to dual wield.

  • 11.21.2009 9:23 AM PDT

Well you know I agree, I mean we both brought this up in that other thread. So as far as I am concerned: Yes please.

To people complaining: it would be an option. Just like dual wielding it self, you might not like it: don't use it, its not like your forced to do so. Options are good, as long as nothing is forced upon you.

Topic starter:
Back in the days when MJOLNIR's Ideas for Halo 3 thread was still active and buzzing, we had this idea too. At the time I had this noobish freewebs where I posted sketches etc for some of the better ideas. I had a sketch for splitting reticles too.
check it out maybe you can use it as an example.

I think it would be a great way to get rid of several Grunts or Buggers at the same time in campaign. Doing this in multiplayer...well, that would mean your death probably.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

I prefer less of a dramatic change from Halo 2 and 3 dual wielding.

Simply keeping single wielded weapons powerful, and then reducing damage and accuracy while dual wielding.

I concur with the visible grenades, and I would at least like the option to shoot them. Maybe have them on the back of the player model.

I also agree with the special effects of each weapon, thought I think the Spiker should push targets hit by the spikes a littl bit. The pinning part I really like.

Though with my preferred method, dual wielding would either reduce or eliminate the special effect of the weapon to preserve balance.

Nice to see someone suggested it before... But I would put the crosshairs a lot closer to each other than your example suggests. SMG crosshairs should halfway overlap each other while something like Magnums have few inches between them. This way difference wouldn't be that huge so it could be somewhat useful even in multiplayer.

Quickly painted these : SMG, Magnum, Sword

I would like you to edit this topic and show us where this Duel wield function would be on the controller.

I would make it default meaning the old dual wielding would be nuked, but for sure crosshairs could normally be together but for example D-Pad Down could be used to split the crosshairs

But like I said most likely its too late for this to happen anyway if it hasn't already.

Interesting.

I would still make the reticules larger and still overlapped.

I like your versions too. Especially how every weapon isn't exactly the same in terms of overlapping etc.

i like the idea of being able to holster both dual weapons.i also like the grenade removal idea;u have to pay a price for dual wielding.i think however for the different crosshairs to be useful they shall both move on the same direction but will have an auto lock for targets in proximity.not a super lock just something for them to work independently of each other

Duel wielding has led to some of the most underpowered or underused guns. Spiker, Halo2 needler, Halo2 magnum, and to some extent the pistol in Halo 3. I like it. But it very often gets me killed.

So many of the duel wield able weapons are only effective if they are duel wielded. I think it creates too many balance issues.

Duel wielding would not be missed by me at all.

Please Bungie, redeem yourself w/ Reach.
Halo 2 and 3 both stink out loud.
In the immortal words of Mr Horse: Halo 2? No sir, didn't like it.

Can't stand dual wielding. Hope it isn't in Reach.

That could work as well

  • 11.22.2009 4:50 AM PDT

How about just deleting auto lock completely?

I never really had problems with minor auto locking, but in ODST I really noticed some annoying auto locking several times.

  • 11.22.2009 4:52 AM PDT

poop

I think it would be kinda hard to handle 2 weapons at the same time.

  • 11.22.2009 4:53 AM PDT

Why?

The idea suggested here features 2 reticles that are close enough to each other to be actively seen by the player (instead of having you focussing on 1 of the 2 reticles).

Furthermore: you control both reticles with the same stick. In other words: they behave as 1 reticle, just separated. Nothing difficult about that.

  • 11.22.2009 4:57 AM PDT

throwning snowballs at cars is like doing a bell ditch. The end result is basically the same: sprinting away from the large man exiting his car who yells profanities, hiding behind a house, and watching as his car patrols the street, waiting to murder you.

Asking the flood for dating advice is like you going up to a bunch of starving Africans and debating the pros and cons of the bacon roll vs the double cheeseburger.

Some one who stands for nothing shall fall for everything.

no that would ruin it u could burst at 2 people at the same time and the sword would suck completly

This is actually a great idea, more weapons equal more power, so balance is neccesary. One minor problem, a sniper and a shotgun would equal 8 nades. A PR and a Magnum would equal 6 nades. I think only holstering dual wielding weapons(both of them) would take away nade space.
(It would be an interesting detail if headshot weapons could explode the grenades once the target has no shields)
That sounds even better, a new medal is born. Should make firefights between multiple people even more interresting

3. All dual-wieldable weapons should have "tool" funcionalities. Not just be clone-damage weapons.
- Needler: 1 is weak, 2 is overkill
Halo 3 needler is great, don't make it weaker just for dual wielding
----->- Plasmarifle: Freeze and blind effects plus shield draining
- Plasmapistol: Plasmarifle effects plus vehicle EMP charge
- Magnum is longer range headshot weapon
- SMG is the basic bullethose<------ Don't know what you mean here, but if you mean that only both weapons together have these effects I don't agree with it, also individual weapons should have these effects
- With 2 swords you can block and attack multiple targets much better and faster. Individual hit is slightly weaker.Like to see dual swords in Halo Reach
(- Mauler is Shotgun+1
(- Spiker nails people to nearby objects and walls and it does lasting damage. You suffer more damage if you go against the spike thus making the wound bigger)+1

So all in all:
Pros:
+ No nerfed damage when dual wielded+1
+ 2 weapons is directed against multiple (or bigger) targets
I don't think it'll work, aiming becomes a lot harder. And I think that people would rather have 1 kill then 2 assists
+ Ability to holster both weapons+1

Cons:
- Slower reloading+1
- Weaker melee when dual wieldingI think that melee should be weaker in total, 1 hit takes a shield is just to much. 2/3 hits take a shield with normal weapons, 3/4 for dual wielding weapons. Maybe 2 for overcharged plasma weapons
- Takes room from grenades+1
- Can't throw grenades+1
