I think we can safely say that the graphical/aesthetic jump from 3/ODST to Reach will be much less dramatic than the jump from CE to 2 or 2 to 3/ODST.

But will Reach looking too similar to 3/ODST influence your buying decision? Will you see it as yet another expansion (however big) of Halo 3 regardless of the gameplay, which could vary dramatically?

Of course I could be completely wrong and Bungie may manage to make Reach both graphically supreme and also unique in style, but offer input on the above scenario only, k?

If you can read this, you are looking at my signature

let's assume Halo look's like Crysis, would you buy it?

you know, Graphics is not everything

I like cheese more than you
Except Blue Stilton. That stuff is nasty. As is any cheese that contains stuff other than cheese

It will probally be closer to CE to halo 2.

They have a new engine so I think it will look much better than H3. They would lose all the hype if it looked like -blam!-.

I more asking about the connotations surrounding same-y graphics, especially relevant seeing as they already reused the style in ODST (which is as much hated as it is loved).

^ My fanfiction. You should go and read it. And leave comments on it. Yeah.

To the posters above me: I think the OP may be referring to the game's art style rather than quality of graphics. Then again, I could be totally wrong. :D

I don't think Reach should have the same bright and colourful sort of style as the main trilogy. The story it covers would definitely benefit from having a darker art style. Kind of... well, kind of like MW2.

In the days of old, there were legends of a land long lost to time. This land was known as Ranna'Mor. Ranna'Mor was said to contain in its borders 7 warriors. These warriors had once unleashed a veritable hell upon the ancient world, until they were locked away. My name is Toriad, and I am one of those warriors. Our return is approaching. Do not run away, do not cower in fear; take solace in your final days, for that is all we can do. -Legend of Ranna'Mor

Well, knowing Bungie, they are going to try and push the limit with the graphics. With any lucky, the final version could look like the Halo 3 announcement trailer (which still looks amazing!).

But to answer the question: I don't care a lot about graphics, as long as the game is fun to play.

That is more what I was referring to. But certain aspect of art style would be limited by graphics.

I was also refering to the, disappointing to many, ODST. Could this coupled with a similar art style put people off buying Reach?

If the graphics in Reach aren't up to par with it's contenders, that could turn people away from buying it. Sadly, we live in a world where graphics take priority to gameplay in the minds of the general public.

True but the people who only play for graphics will leave the game for the next best thing, people who play for the gameplay will stay or comeback.

Bungie need to cater to the Graphic lovers though.. How else will they make top dollar?

Agreed. Besides, we've kind of hit a point where graphic technology advancement is slowing quite a bit.

This is my point.
With little advancements to make (with the hardware we are stuck with) will it just end up looking the same/similar. And will this cause people to compare it to ODST without really caring about the gameplay values?

  • 11.22.2009 4:56 AM PDT

1.Arkham Asylum, 2.Mass Effect, 3.Halo CE, 4.Mass Effect 2, 5.Halo 2, 6.Splinter Cell Double Agent, 7.Gears of War 2, 8.Medievil, 9.Oblivion, 10.Crash Team Racing

I feel that ever since Xbox1-gen graphical improvements have been kinda moot. Games like Halo, Splinter Cell, Brothers in Arms and Forza already had amazing 3D graphics with real-time-lightings and lip-syncs.

People say Forza 3 looks absolutely stunning but I just think "meh". Only huge games like Elder Scrolls and GTA have gotten quite a nice graphics update on 360.

I wouldn't complain if every game looked like Halo3-Bioshock-Oblivion-GTA4-NHL10... Even in 2030. The extra power can be used to other things.

But people love both Forza3 and MW2 so if Reach is worthwhile game on its on I don't think people will compare it to ODST in negative shade.

  • 11.22.2009 5:31 AM PDT

Sure.

Reach: 3 years, New engine.
ODST: 1 year, Same engine.

Ofcourse the graphics are going to be good.

I understand what you mean. Notice that graphical improvements have been less and less notorius over the last years. The better something already looks, the harder it is to improve it.

Anyway, I Expect Halo:Reach to look better than Halo 3 and ODST, but not really that mind blowing. That's not what pleases me the most about Halo. I just know it will be a great game.

  • 11.22.2009 6:32 AM PDT

What i want in Reach is better faces!
The faces in halo 3 and ODST were horrible.

You realize that ODST was made in a year and a half and was using the exact same engine and that Reach has been in production since 2007 as well but is using a whole new engine? The chances of it looking "samey" are quite low.
