Subject: Beam weaponry?

It's all in good fun!

In Halo, we have all of these human weapons (mostly gunpowder) and Covenant weapons (varied, but the plasma weapons are more bolt-like).

The only true beam weapons we have are the sentinel beam and, I suppose, the spartan laser and beam rifle, although they don't really count since they don't sustain.

Am I the only one here that would like to see more beam weaponry? It could be incredibly interesting: great range, but less power.

I dunno. What do you guys think?

Beam Rifle...?
I suppose I should have put that in the OP (along with the spartan laser), but, like I said, they don't really count, since they aren't sustained.

Beam weapon doesn't mean weapon that fires continuous beam. It means a weapon that fires (coherrent) electro magnetic radiation beam or a particle beam.
But i know what you mean. But i don't think they're really good gameplay-wise, very hard to balance really, they tend to be too strong or too weak. And they aren't really interesting... A beam pulse like the Spartan Laser or the Beam Rifle works better.

One change i'd like to get, is changing the Spartan Laser to pulse laser. It's a tad bit OP against vehicles currently. I think if it would be made a pulse laser, it wouldn't be "so" OP.
Keep the 3 sec charge time, but rather than releasing the energy as one strong beam, split the damage for 4-6 beams that fire in quick succesion over a second or so. One would need to keep it aimed to the target, and a single pulse wouldn't do enough damage to destroy it, expect maybe Mongoose. Also, the overpenetration would be kept. Not quite a "beam" weapon but close.

i think the splaser shall be changed a bit, like when u charge it it shall consume energy like the plasma pistol because people keep chargin it and then come out fire and boom have a one shot instant kill vehicle destroyer.i think it shall have a price

Time Splitters 2 had this great weapon called the ElectroTool. It was essentially a Sentinel Beam, except composed of electricity and (I believe, haven't played TS2 in about 3 years) would be attracted to people and metallic objects that went too near the beam.

Something similar to this should be included.

Here’s what Luke had to say about the differences in treatment between the Spartans and Elites in Reach:

“Instead of piece-by-piece customization like the Spartans, Elite customization is a full model swap with models selected from the various Elite classes appearing throughout the Campaign. There are all kinds of reasons for this, not the least of which is our continued emphasis on the Spartan as your identity in Reach.”

EDIT: Include the Blue Sentinel Beam

I think the covenant should have a Beam Cannon in addition to the Beam Rifle.

The Beam Cannon would be an equivalent to a Spartan Laser, but instead of 3 frames of blast, the Beam Cannon would fire like the Sentinel Beam.

It would have a 3x scope, and the damage would start out small. The longer you hold the beam on the target, the higher the damage output.

So, for the first second, 1x the weapons damage. 2nd second, 2x the weapon damage, and so on until either the weapon overheats, the target is destroyed, or the beam loses contact with the target.

This would give the Covenant a weapon that is ideal for taking out Tanks, Hornets, and Banshees. The covenant armory has had serious trouble dealing with these targets, since the Fuel Rod has serious time to target, and cannot be used in H3 matchmaking.

Also, it wouldn't be as good against Ghosts, Mongoose, or Warthogs, since they can move quickly and are hard to keep a bead on. The same would go for individual soldiers, since they would need to be in the open and distracted to damage them enough.

Locust

*Smiles* Oh yeah... Now the Locust is bigger than the Scorpion, about the size of the Elephant, or maybe a bit smaller. But wouldn't that be nice vehicle in MP? Locusts aren't Lekgolo driven like the Scarabs are.
A vehicle with plasma/laser beam.

Maybe on specific maps like the Elephant was only in Sandtrap.

How about a handheld battery powered version of the locust beam?

The locust would fit nicely into MP: they'd have really strong shields, but once the shields are taken down, they're pretty much cardboard. It would prevent it from being too powerful because you can it with an EMP and take out the shield.
Holding RT fires the laser, and hodling LT puts it into overdrive mode: the laser becomes much more powerful and gets a bigger AOE, but drains it shields, leaving it vulnerable to all kinds of attacks.

The OP is only talking about the Sentinel Beam's mode of fire.

A constant stream that does damage/time.
