Now I'm not one for doing much 3D work, mostly just stuff for print or the web. Today I tried working with the CS4 3D software, and found it quite interesting.

Has anyone else used this, and what do you think of it?

What is this CS4 3D software your talking about, do you mean the 3D layers option in Photoshop? I dont think there is any adobe 3D software I have the CS3 extened suite with 3D support for PS and use CS4 in uni but dont know any 3D stuff, got any screenshots of what you mean?

In Photoshop CS4, you can change 2D layers into 3D objects.

These can then be directly painted onto, and even clone-stamped.

3D objects can also be imported, in 3D Studio (.3DS), Collada (.DAE), Google Earth 4 (.KMZ), U3D (.U3D) and Wavefront|OBJ (.OBJ) formats.

This Tutorial maps the basics and gives you an idea of what is possible to do by using CS4 for this.

Oh you mean using imported Files from Modeling programs? If I had a modeling program on this computer I would be messing around with that.

Ahhh I see now, yeah you can also use CS3 Extended you dont need CS$

Cool, I never used CS3, I jumped from CS2 to 4.

I found it interesting being able to work with 2D and 3D layers on the same canvas.

O, I meant to ask as well, are their any free 3D render packages for making more abstract images? I've been using incendia, but it is strictly fractal design.

Use Blender its got a free inbuilt renderer. Just import your model in and render. Other than that Cheetah 3D is free but its MAC only.

  • 11.24.2009 10:22 AM PDT

You could try google sketchup.

Thanks, I'll try Blender. I've used Google Sketchup, and Solid Works, but both are more for practical design use, I'm looking for something like C4D. I'll give Blender a go and upload some results.

Well I use google sketchup for most of my work and it gives great results, there are some amazing 3rd party renderers. You can see some of my work in my thread here on the gallery.

Yes but google sketch up isn't useful if you are trying to upload into games or video, though you can make some cool renders and designs easily.

"Yes but google sketch up isn't useful if you are trying to upload into games or video, though you can make some cool renders and designs easily."

Thats not true there is nothing you cant do that can be done in other programmes. You can export in 3ds and obj so anything you make can be put into game.
So you are wrong buggy virus its 100% possible to port directly into a game engine so make sure you get your facts right before feeding people false information. I myself have actually made models in SU that have been put into fully working PC games! Anyway he doesnt want to make games just renders which would be perfect for SU, just import your model then use a free renderer and your all done!

I would recommend SU if you are starting off as a novice. Its easier to use than the other programmes and once you have grasped the basics f 3D you can move on to another package but if you want a free software with a good community try blender or SU.

Anyway here are some links:
blender
Blender training on same link!

By the way here is a screenshot of part of a tutorial I wrote on 3D layers in photoshop CS3 with 3D layers is this similar to what you were talking about:

Oh, I know you can do that, export directly into a game from google sketch up, but usually there are clipping errors and other things like that that you wouldn't notice usually that get fixed up in other Modeling programs.

And usually by the time you fixed up all those errors having made something in CAD or Gmax would have been just as fast.

It depends on the quality of the model you make, ive never had any problems in 4 years? Also only the pro version has the export facility so if your running a pirate version it will have errors compared to my retail version. You see when you export the faces are then triangulated so a badly put together model will suffer issues, if you take care in your model you wont have these problems.
Remember the pro version is $500 dollars so its no amature product its a full fledged design package used throughout the real modeling world.

Its up to you smyf what type of renders do you want to produce, the crazy artistic types like this one I did http://cmcdn.net/4725902/800x500.jpeg or are you planning on doing hard geometry?

Well liam it really depends on the kind of model you need and the limitations of it.

  • 11.24.2009 6:04 PM PDT

http://liam887halo.carbonmade.com/

what do you mean limitations? and type of model? A models a model all geometry is made up of the same architecture and is therefore rendered the same cross platform and package.

And smyf if you can spare £30-50 then you can buy a professional renderer with advanced ray tracing options. I know you want a free one and there are many but they step up in quality exponentially for a small fee. Even if you are just a hobbyist 3D artist there is nothing like seeing you model rendered in all its glory so to speak lol!

If you tried to use Google sketchup for say... Halo CE, you would have a nightmare after exporting it.

not really a 3ds. file is a 3ds.file no matter what programme it comes form have you tried this yourself?
If you make a model in 3dsmax and export it into 3ds and make the same model in SU and export it in 3ds you have exacty the same file?!?
As far as I know im the only one out of the two of us who has actually made models for a game and im at university doing this right now and have been forwarded for a masters degree in 3D digital design next year so believe me when I say I know what im talking about lol.

Sorry to get off topic smyf ;-) I saw your deviant page and your image 'grey fire' is great look forward to seeing your new fractals,

You dont have to be sarcastic lol im only trying to help somebody find software that will be useful for them and as its what I do at uni I think im qualified to help. He doesnt want to put models into games just wants a free rednerer for fractals probably?
Its up to him to decide what he wants im merely suggesting software you dont have to put it down when you cant even use it?

Well if I can't beat you in modeling I'll have to do so through sarcasm.

Tis nature's way of compensating.

Unless I get really good at modeling, then you're screwed.

Beat me lol?

Its not a competition you dont need to be so argumentative about points you cannot back up. I dont want to argue im just trying to help people. Ill even give you some help modeling if you wish thats what I joined these forums for, to share my md work and help others with theirs.
I wasn't having a go at you merely pointing out SU is as valid a choice as blender for rendering? I use 3dsmax 2010 and SU and redner in podium, vray and mental ray, they are all good choices and cannot fault any of them.

This is what im buying in the new year and if you are a student ts the best package in the world for fractals!, models and renders. Its what I made my flower render with a few posts back:

http://www.studica.com/products/product_detail.cfm?productid= 60465&gclid=CIav3cSYnZ4CFUtp4wodUhM0mg

And for you buggy virus this is 'THE' package for game makers, everybody from bungie to rockstar use these to build and animate the models and scenery.

I know what autodesk is...

*stomps grumpily like a little kid feeling like he is being treated younger than he is*

Anyways sadly for me my computer has been wiped, and for some reason my administrative privileges on my computer aren't working anymore after the place that wiped it gave it back to me (I'll fix this soon...) and I don't have any modeling programs on this... thankfully I still have photoshop though.
