Subject: Legendary Solo Tips on Lost Platoon

I posted several videos on youtube that may assist you in obtaining the flaming skull you receive when getting high firefight scores on legendary. see here for the 1st one (out of 7). Unfortunately, a similar thread was locked several days ago because someone thought I had bumped my topic by responding to peoples questions. Anyway, below is a summary of the last thread that provide some tips on how to survive legendary mode on Lost Platoon. You might want to watch the videos first as I refer to them sometimes in the tips.

Every time you hear the word reinforcements, head to where I lase the wraith. Target the wraith while the phantom is still there and it will try and shoot at you and in the process damage its shields. This makes it easier to kill it with one laser shot. If you wait too long, the phantom will leave and you have to hit it exactly right to get a kill with one shot. However, if you don't kill it, don't waste another shot. Just use your chopper and shoot it a little.

Always have at least one laser shot available for each wave. Don't waste them on the other wraith unless you have extra. Its a -blam!- on the chieftan round when you are out of lasers and both wraiths land during the round.

If you watched my films, you can see that jacking the chopper is pretty easy. Just practice doing it a little. During the 3rd round, if he hits you with the chopper bullets, -blam!- slap him (or the chopper) before you jack it. You will get your health back. Sometimes he will disappear behind the wall after you jack it (in the film a couple of times) From experience, it is easier to wait until the chieftan round and kill him with a hammer - especially after set four when mythic is on. Also, beware, if you leave the area, sometimes he will come out and steal a chopper if it is lying around near him.

If you deviate much from what I did, you will probably die. I have tried alot of methods and this is the only one that worked. If you go too far forward from where I played, you will piss the grunts off and you will die in a barrage of fuel rod gun bullets in the later sets.

Another key is blocking off the stairs. It forces all of the enemy to come to where you are waiting on them. They can't come in behind you. Beware - the Hunters will knock the choppers off the stairs. Try to get them back as quickly as possible during the later sets or you will be quickly surrounded and barraged by plasma throwing grunts.

Speaking of grunts. Whenever you see them (after set 4 especially), jump off your chopper and headshot them. They can stick your chopper from a mile away and at least one is always carrying a fuel rod gun in each group. You get more points that way too.

Keep a chopper under the stairs where the warthog spawns and make sure it is facing out. That way, when you are low on health, you can rush in between waves, get a health pack, and be on your way without having to worry about turning your chopper around. Don't forget to fix it when the round is over. Also, move the frigging warthog out of the way somewhere. I never use it except in the beginning sometimes to shoot a brute off the chopper.

At the end of each round, keep one enemy alive - preferably a jackal with a shield. You can take as long as you like positioning the choppers and such.

Always die during bonus rounds. You spawn with full ammo and your killing sprees will reset. I had something like 17 invincibles in the game - they are worth quite a few points in the later rounds. Also, as you see in the film, park your chopper right outside the spawn point prior to the bonus round so that you can jump on, rush to the laser and be back in position prior to the wraith dropping.

use the back button to watch for the enemy coming around the corners. If you just drive around it without checking - you will most likely get stuck and die.

Sometimes the enemy will be coming at you at the same time the chopper does. Unless you really need it, just splatter the chopper. I have a good technique to do that. Watch my gameplay in later sets.

You can boost over the rocks behind the spawn point to get to the alley. This is important to know in later sets when you die. I would suggest practicing it some. Hang a right out of the spawn and go around the building. Boost up and over the rocks in front of you. It is pretty much suicide to try to go left through whatever is standing there. At best, because of blackeye, you will be beeping the rest of the round due to low shields.

Don't hang out in the spawn point after you respawn in the later sets. Leave immediately or you (and all your choppers in there) will die again in a barrage of plasmas and fuel rod blasts.

Don't park the chopper over the area where you spawn. You will spawn in the other building if you do. I always keep a couple in the other building in case that happens. ( it can happen if you wait in the spawn too long and all of your choppers are in pieces everywhere from being blown up). I always keep a max of 4 choppers in there- two in each of the back corners facing out.

Oh yeah, it takes about a full day (24 hours) of actually playing to get that many points (it took me that long anyway). I got it over the course of a 3 day weekend by just pausing the game to do whatever. Praying that your xbox doesn't overheat, that your power doesn't go out, that you don't lose your internet connection or that bungie doesn't decide to do an update during that time period probably can't hurt (the update thing happened to me in an earlier attempt - I was only at around 3 million though). I had around 15 lives left when I quit out at set 18. I was afraid to keep playing due to the aforementioned.

I saw the old thread, it was very helpfull. I know that if I had just done that then the 2.4 hours in alpha site might have been over quicker. lol. Any way, the link just sends me to my videos, not yours.

wow. im going to have to try this sometime.

could you give the exact point values for each of the burning skulls?

  • 11.24.2009 12:52 PM PDT

Sorry about that, I tried linking to all seven videos but it didn't work. I fixed it to go to the first video. There are seven videos in total which represent the first two sets of gameplay when I earned 10.3 million. I recorded them on fast forward so that they are not as long. Most of the game is in my fileshare (titled 10 million points). It goes to set 13 before the film quits. I didn't quit out until set 18 though.

2 million on legendary for the 1st one
4 million on legendary for the 2nd one

No one is sure about the last one. Only three people have it and we all got 10 million on legendary. There was a guy that got 5 million but he didn't get it. I would say anywhere from 6 million to 10 million. As I stated in my last thread, I would hate to be the guy that quits out at 8 million only to learn that it is not enough for the last skull. My recommendation would be to get 10 million to be sure.

Thanks for the info, and your tips are very helpful.

Do you know how long it might take to get up to 4 million on lost platoon? and would it be recommended to do it alone, or with 2+ players? thanks for the help

If only people read my threads....

I have read both this thread and you rlast one and watched your videos, and your strategies actually help me do better :P

If you play conservative, it usually takes a little over an hour a set. I played last night and quit at the beginning of the fifth set with around 1.8 million points. It took about 4.5 hours. However, due to the increasing multipliers, going from 2 million to 4 million doesn't take as long.

If you are going for a large score I would suggest that you do it alone because you can pause it when you want to. I helped a guy the other night get to 2 million and it took around 5 hours. It just depends how conservative you want to be.

I have been doing mostly heroic, but I've also been doing some legendary to get good at it

There is quite a bit of difference as far as your shields go. You have to get used to avoiding alot of contact with the enemy.

I dissagree with that statement. You dont ever want to avoid contact with the enemy.

Its direct contact that you need to avoid as it leaves you the most exposed.

Always attack with cover in mind and fallback points already set up.

For me I try to get a Carbine ASAP and keep it. It is a superb ranged weapon and it is unaffected by tilt. Keep it on you at all times and you can move on catwalks and under cover and still be able to pick off your enemies one at a time.

Dont throw yourself at large groups either. Force them to spread out where you can take them in smaller groups if not individually. That drasticly increases your chances at survival.

And if you do happen to drop into a mob of enemies I would personally pick off the Grunts or Jackels in a single direction. That way I make a hole I can run through and make it back to cover. Never ever let yourself get surrouned in CQC. It will be the end of you.

I see. Well is there any chance that you could help me get to 4 million, or even 2 million if 4 is too much to ask?

I am on about every night around 11:00 est. I usually help people out when asked. 2 million is my limit due to the time it takes. By that time, you should have figured out my strategies first hand to complete a longer solo legendary run.

that sounds nice
I just got a 95k legendary run (I didn't have much time, I was just testing, not really trying) so when I have time, hopefully, I'll get a few 100k points

You obviously must have contact with them to kill them. I meant up-close contact. All I ever have in my possession is the laser, magnum and a boatload of choppers. Your strategy is fine for playing for fun (i do it too). However, I don't believe it would last in obtaining a really high legendary score.

.................leaving tomorrow morning, won't get back until friday night, and I have alot of homework this weekend................

So I gathered. I just thought I would point it out incase people didnt make that distinction.

And I do beg to differ about my strategy. I frequently play for 3-4 hours on Legendary (one game) using that strategy and score upwards of 2 million. More often than not I end up leaving the game as I have to go to work or go to bed. Generally speaking I could make it well past set 10 or 12 doing this by my self.

Unfortunately as I dont play online ever (for personal reasons) I can not show you this to "prove" it (one of the reasons I dont play online). However it is more than useable if you have the drive to do it.

It is slower paced to be sure as I dont use the Chopper what so ever but it is just as effective. It causes problems with most people because they like it to be fast paced and frequently hurry their shots and waste ammo when they dont need to.

I bring down Chieftans on Legendary with the Carbine in around 10-12 shots. About the same needed for the pistol as many people get paniced with that strategy. And it takes no more time too.

This stratagy also works really well on Crater (my favorite) and Rally Point when going solo.

But then again maybe I am a freek. Who knows.

I have never tried endure playing from that location. The enemy act somewhat differently when more than one Person is playing. It has been my experience to play at the other wraith drop location when helping with endure. All four players just sit in choppers in that corner and fire away. Move when the wraith drops, lase it and go right back to that position. You don't have to worry about lasing the other wraith as you are out of it's reach. You have to stay together though. If you don't, the enemy won't come to you. If you just sit there, they will always come in groups of four. Also, when you hear "reinforcements", there is always four enemies left (true for solo as well). It is best to get rid of them prior to the next drop because they will mess with you as you are trying to lase the next wraith.

throwning snowballs at cars is like doing a bell ditch. The end result is basically the same: sprinting away from the large man exiting his car who yells profanities, hiding behind a house, and watching as his car patrols the street, waiting to murder you.

Asking the flood for dating advice is like you going up to a bunch of starving Africans and debating the pros and cons of the bacon roll vs the double cheeseburger.
