Subject: Where Can I Find Modeling Application?

I see all these awesome 3D models, and I want to make one of my own. What would be a good modeling application that I can download?

Mac compatible
Free

Gmax is a free modeling program, albeit it lacks features.

Just searching it in google will give you a ton of places to download it.

Although Liam insists that Google sketch up can also be used for importable models, and it really is much easier to use in my opinion.

Oh and modeling is pretty hard so you got to stick with it, people play editors and stuff in games like forge and then think, "I'll take the next step up and model" it really isn't that simple.

Not trying to discourage you but it really isn't simple

[chat conversation]
Me: Argh, this map is so annoying

Guy: what are you doing

Me: modeling in Gmaz

Guy: for what?

Me: CE, making a map

Guy: oh cool, what are you using

Me: gmax, free modeling program

Guy: I think I'll download it

Me: ok

...Later in Chat...

Me: oh you're back

Guy: I just got it
Opening it right now
What the heck?

Me: confusing

Guy: no clue what is going on
Wait... I made a teapot?

lolz the famous teapot, even to this day I have no idea why it is in all the primitive shape files.

Yeah buggy virus is right, its really between:

Gmax

SU pro (easiest & quickest by far but if your not careful modelling and rush you will have a geometry nightmare when exporting, also have to take care not to have reverse faces if you texture can be)

Blender (the best but the hardest to learn, stick with it tho and its super slick)

Cheetah 3D (Mac only)

You can use SU to grab the basic skills of 3D and then progress to blender thats the way I did it anyway and it worked wonders, using 3dsmax2010 now instead of blender but the key skills stay the same across all the applications. What specs are you running on your mac:
OSX?
RAM?
Processor?
Intel?

Only ask as SU is better for low end systems, obv it all depends on the poly count of your model but as a beginner I dont think you should be worried about that.

I thought someone like you would have some idea about it, apparently its mystery is even deeper than I expected.

lol its not a mystery its just a teapot they put in the primitives folder its meant to be a joke but its been going since day 1 these is no need for them to use it anymore but i guess its tradition.

I read one of those links and this made me laugh: "it's rumoured that some of the early pioneers of computer graphics could type in the teapot from memory."

Yeah, Blender gives you more I think, but there are easier ones that you could use.

SU with plugin support is excellent and very easy to pick up, you can be doing in days what would take weeks even a month in blender. Blender has got animation and rigging however, its up to you personally i would use SU

I say that we should dedicate a day in modeling to the teapot... though I'm not exactly sure what modelers would do...

Get drunk out of teapots and see what they end up modeling?
