i come to you from my deathbed because michigan is the only state where it can be 100 degrees at one moment and then 55 and raining the next...
i couldnt help but notice, after a long hiatus travelling in more personal groups, that people have "given up" on the forums. people claim they are "overrun with a," well, a flood, if you will, of "evil wrongness and bad BO." yet even i, the unknown and generally disliked mattski133, found my beginnings there, before clicking a random link in someones profile and finding redemption...
but where are the people who can set these people on the right path? the mods, you say? i dont think the answer lies in simply blocking a thread. i believe my first blocked thread went along the lines of my idea being called "inane" and "pointless". i had heard the word "inane" before, but wanting to get it right, i had to look that up, and it was rewarding indeed. i learned that those two words are of the same meaning. knowledge IS power after all.
there is a thread somewhere in here that i just read (its is probably already buried in a heap of modded posts) that was composed of veterans, if you will, (i like that phrase) that were reminiscing of the good times. it is this that turned the bulb on.
so what went wrong, i wonder? (you'll see im relatively new to this business...i didnt actually witness this "takeover") i could be wrong here, but i think simply the mods were overwhelmed by the massive success of Halo2, and the hordes that arrived in these forums, looking for answers. and once that happened, i dont think anyone else took the time to set these people right...and the mods lost patience, quickly.
the way to fight ignorance, without doubt, is with knowledge and time. and that was not done. suddenly the quest for answers became a quest for attention, and the trouble began as the spam built.
there was no example set, no time taken to inform someone that reading is important, and that having eight posts being the same on one page is not good for business. simple things. another example would be posting a "sweet modded box trick" or "a cool glitch". thank you, tool. i hadnt seen that yet.
i believe most people took their business elsewhere at that point, setting up groups of their own, and generally abandoning the forums to the mods and the fools to battle over. so perhaps before pointing thy lofty fingers at the horde as the reason for this backward trend, some action should be taken...as it should have been taken long ago.
i for one am going back to new mombasa and the other forums with these lessons, and i will do my part in keeping things interesting, to take the info to the public instead of the people who already know. until the mods tell me not to. or until gods prophet tells me not to. that would be great if i could get that one more time. (you big softy...)
that being said, join this crusade it if so appeals to you. there is no group to join, no duty involved. just a truckload of one line zingers, mother jokes, and quality posts that can, with luck, turn it around.
matt "gonna get burned for this one" ski
