canon... idk. There was the excellent point that one of their service numbers was 256 or something. In the book there were only 150 spartans... Meh. I was pumped for it to begin with, but now... idk. I mean, ill still buy it- but as a dedicated fan whos read every book and seen every video (Except for the anime series, cause thats retarded and RUINS halo) I can't help but wonder why they arent just going along with the book!?! It was soo good... and could make such an awesome game! It's depressing in a way, to see this whole new group of Spartans and possible "volunteer spartans" suddenly show up if it means the story of reach is suddenly altered...
It's not going against the canon of the book though, merely expanding it. If for example they took the team of spartans from the novel and then decided to kill them of, this would be going against canon, as that never happened.
The reason they aren't going along with the book is so they have more freedom for the story and characters. Simply creating a game of the book will inevitably result in changes for gameplay and othe purposes and would in my oppinion cheapen it, and go against canon. Instead they are telling the story of reach from a different perspective (It was a big planet, with lots of stories to tell).
We know that the initial spartan program was kept a secret, as was the spartan-III program. Who's to say there could not have been another spartan-II program that was kept secret, and because there are no characters from the novel, it in no way whatsoever goes against the novel, as it is seperate and builds upon the story of reach.
If however bungie do not explain this discrepency then that does create a problem, if explained then it will be fine.
