Subject: Bungie really brought down the difficulty

I'd like to be half-man half-tree in an octopus' garden in the shade.

I just bought Halo CE from the marketplace a few days ago. I had never played it before, so everything was new to me. I decided to play on Legendary because in Halo 3, I could beat Legendary easily. But when I started playing, I almost completely relied on plasma grenades to kill the Elites because they were so strong. Even Jackals were harder to kill, it seemed. I'm having a hard time getting through the game, and I'm only on the second level! Why did Bungie make Halo 3 (and possibly Halo 2, I've never played that) so easy compared to the original?

That's a great question. Halo CE Legendary was a challenge to complete. I did it with a friend, basically you have to keep one person back to respawn and just keep going out to kill enemies.

We'd just trade off who stayed back to respawn to keep it fun.

Supreme Dictator, Industrial Polluter, Megalomaniac, Corrupt Politician, Underhanded Reprobate, Rainforest Ravager, Puppy Kicker, Oil Spill Coordinator, Holiday Hater, and an Insurance Salesman.

I think a lot of it comes from Elites being much tougher (and smarter) enemies than Brutes are. Also, in Halo: CE you had less weapons to work with and there was no dual-wielding.

You are right in stating that HCE's campaign was more difficult on Legendary, but let me tell you, H2's Legendary was so hard it wasn't even fun. The Jackal snipers were so accurate, that if u tried to make any charge in the open within their area of observation, you were a walking dead man.

Elites shields recharge, so yeah, definitely a lot harder.

EXTREME PREJUDICE

Agreed!

I liked how Halo: CE and Halo 2 were challenging. You had to be on the top of your game to win.

I can't help but feel as though Halo 3's Legendary campaign was just cheap.

Here is my view on the series in difficulty:

Halo: CE: A true challenge. Enemies reacted to the player differently each time, and were often difficult to take down. You could not simply just sit back and pour ammo, as they would either take cover, shoot back, or come get you. Not to mention, the Flood actually floods you.

Halo 2: A true cheap shot to the groin area. Nigh-impossible on single-player, and Jackal snipers, as well as Hunters and Brutes make this more a punishment than a challenge.

Halo 3: Bland and boring. Although a mere 2-3 shots from any weapon will remove shields, and two more will kill you, all that is necessary is this: Pop out of cover, fire all bullets in magazine, get back to cover, rinse and repeat. Enemies rarely come after the player, and rarely shoot back from mid-range. Allies are useless, especially Elites. Flood no longer "flood" you, as their weapons do the same damage as Covenant. Flood are incredibly easy, if frustrating, mostly 1-hit kills.

Agreed, Halo3 and ODST campaigns were definitely much easier.

Halo 2 was too hard, but halo 1 was the best.

Tip: Use the plasma pistol and realise that its semi-auto mode does damage comparable to the automatic weapons. Pwnage ensues.

Easy, H1 took more skill than the other two Halos combined.

  • 12.20.2009 11:49 AM PDT

Halo's Legendary was both fun and challenging. Halo 2's was just challenging, and Halo 3/ODST's were just fun. That's what I think, anyways.

Halo 2 was by far the most difficult and frustrating out of the games.

Hell..I was stuck on Cairo Station forever.

I was really surprised at the difficulty, it was and still is a nice challenge.

Agreed completely. Halo 2 Legendary was just...the most frustrating gaming experience I've ever had.

Well Halo 3 had the weakest of the three when it came to Legendary difficulty.

Ce was tough but still fun and Halo 2 was a nightmare.

Those goddamn Jackal snipers don't miss you...ever.

When I started playing Halo, I played Halo 3 first. Eventually, I bought Halo 2 and played its campaign, then Halo Combat Evolved. The campaigns, in the order I played them, were progressively harder.

Halo CE had a pretty simple explanation for its difficulty - You were not very strong, and the enemies were. Elites could recharge their shields, and yours drained extremely quickly.

Halo 2 had insanely smart AI attacking from every direction imaginable. Jackal snipers never missed, and elites dodged my individual bullets. I couldn't believe that Bungie didn't go out of business because people refused to continue such a hard campaign experience.

Halo 3, without the Elites to fight against, had extremely dumb AI, IMO. Not only that, but the level designs were very linear, so you could always retreat backward if there were too many enemies in front of you.

  • 12.22.2009 10:29 PM PDT

Here's how I feel about the campaigns on legendary.

The Jackals on H2 Legendary literally never missed if you were outside of cover more then a few seconds. The Brutes were terrible to fight not because of how hard they were but just how boring it became when almost every fight devolved into them charging you. There is a huge difference between smart AI an just plain cheap and H2 crossed into cheap territory.H2 legendary was just cheap, frustrating and boring to me.

Halo 3 felt a little to easy but I still had some fun with it.Compared to the other two games it didn't feel like I had actually beat it on Legendary though. Legendary on H3 felt like Heroic to me on the other games.

Halo:CE was hard but it never felt cheap hard to me. It felt like I had accomplished something while still having quite a bit of fun. For whatever reason it actually seems like the AI in the first game was as smart if not more so then that of the later games which blows my mind.Plasma weapons in general are your best friend playing Halo:CE on legendary.

Indeed, jackal snipers and the Halo 2 brute gorilla rage was bad...

  • 12.23.2009 12:26 AM PDT

Yea, Halo 1 and 2's Legendary difficulty is a lot harder than Halo 3's. But if you want to start complaining that Bungie made Halo 3 too easy, why don't you put a few skulls on and try again. If you really want a challenge put all of the skulls on. You can customize your experience with all the different skulls. Back in Halo CE there were no skulls so Bungie had to make the levels difficult and in Halo 2 they were less efficient to activate them. Halo 3 has the most diverse difficulty levels in all the Halos, so don't complain until you see all the possibilities.

I am the hand of fate!

Halo 1 was incredibly challenging, as enemies took awhile to kill, the weapons did a lot of damage, and the enemies were very smart. Halo 2 still had smart enemies that did large damage. Halo 3 had enemies that did a large amount of damage. That was it. ODST had enemies that took awhile to kill and the weapons did a lot of damage. SOO, hopefully Reach adds smart AI back.

Your truth is HURTING me. I created my own gods just so I could blaspheme them, thanks to the Jackal snipers.

I feel like i belong here. <3 i was ridiculed when i said the halo2 legendary was hard and not fair. =/ even co-op is a let down.
