Subject: What is it about this game?

The universe is probably littered with the one-planet graves of cultures which made the sensible economic decision that there's no good reason to go into space--each discovered, studied, and remembered by the ones who made the irrational decision.

That keeps me coming back to it time and time again after almost 8 years? I must have played the campaign to this game at minimum 40 times. However I still play it and I just can't place my finger on why it is so special. Unlike most people Halo wasn't my first gaming experience. Prior to the xbox I was an avid fan of the original unreal tournament online.

I've enjoyed Halo2 and 3's multiplayer's, however their campaigns I just can't keep going back to. Halo 2's just go so boring mid way through, and halo 3's while nice visually, after the 5th run through, it becomes very predicable. I won't even comment on ODST since once was enough and I'll leave it at that. Though I can honestly say this game without a multiplayer and any additional support, that are the two pillars most games rely on these days, Halo has returned my $50 dollar investment 100 fold.

No. Get out.

Games like Halo: CE keep us coming back because they they do things right. They have great gameplay, and everything is tweaked just right so that everything works. It just doesn't stop being fun.

Halo: CE Started it all, it was fun. Visually it may not have been stunning, but the game it self was awesome. Bungie did it right with Halo, yes there was no dual wielding, or vehicle jacking, but who cares? You didn't need two guns, if you wanted a vehicle, you shot the driver out of the seat. Plus, I don't know about you, but I think fall damage rules!

I was drunk when I made this screen name...

Like there's so much to say about this game. When it first came out it was crazy because a game like this would seem at the time only work on the PC, But then Microsoft makes Xbox and Halo was like the first game and it blew peoples mind! A good first person shooter on the console that worked was back when N64 was around and they had the game Goldeneye. Halo CE perfected the controls for a FPS on a console.

Why does everyone hate Halo 2? Maybe its because its the worst game ever next to mario.

The replay value Combat Evolved has to offer is so ridiculous, not even games today can match its brilliance.

It is truly the best and most accomplished First Person Shooter of our time.

The graphics were nuts considering the time it was made. I'm fairly certain that is was the most graphically advanced Xbox game until Halo 2.

dude halo is probably one of the best first person shooters ever. that is what makes it so much fun.

Proud tester of the Halo 3 beta.

Many people, including myself, say that Halo:CE invented the FPS as we know it. I also keep coming back to this game, and even though it doesn't give me the thrills I had during the first playthroughs, it's still an amazing experience.

The reason it manages to pull people back after almost a decade is because it was emotional, innovative, and it was a breakthrough for the future of FPS. Games started being compared to Halo, it became the golden standard.

All counter-arguments to evolution are based on a gross misunderstanding of the theory.

Its the epic story/campaign mode that brings me back to it.

Just to throw a little historical perspective onto it, so younger folks might appreciate...The closest thing we had to CE before Xbox was probably "Shadows of the Empire" or "GoldenEye." Youtube or whatever to see an example of those "top tier" games. The systems were a joke to that point. Not only was the Xbox a vastly superior animal, its top title didn't even gain competition until its own sequel and Riddick came out near the end of its life cycle. But even when one removes the sentimentality of the time, the game just plain stands up because of the work behind it. Just a masterpiece.

Eh think it was more unreal tournament/counter strike/ and quake. But halo gets it for a console game. :D

Yes, but it needed to be said.

Simply "being a classic" does not mean a game is good. Timesplitters is a classic, but I didn't find it to be all that good. There are other factors at play here.

  • 12.20.2009 4:24 PM PDT

Well, to be a classic, it must be great right?

Although it has been awhile since I have played it the reason I will go back and play is because it is fun.

Deceptively simple game play made it instinctive. Two weapons, two types of grenades and easy to operate vehicles.

I didn't realize how great it was until I got one of the Wolfenstein titles and ending up lugging something like 27 weapons around in my backpack and having to scroll through them to decide how I wanted to slice and dice my -blam!- opponents.

Odd, En-Ay-Zee-Eye doesn't make it past the censor?
