Remember finding that ODST in High Charity during the Halo 3 Campaign mission Cortana? I felt that unfortunate soul deserved his own proper backstory and a possible explanation of how he got there. I present the first part of Halo: ODST-High Charity.

The hums of the Phantom and horrid stench of Brutes woke Gunnery Sergeant Scott McHale who found himself near the giant ape-like creatures. He turned his head and saw his squad mates either laying down dead or sitting up, but being near-death themselves. They were Orbital Drop Shock Troopers who made up a second initial force against the Covenant on the ring world known as Halo. The In Amber Clad had jumped with the Prophet of Regret's carrier over New Mombasa back on Earth and ended up here. His squad didn't go in HEV pods with the other ODSTs, Sergeant Johnson, and Spartan-117, or Master Chief as he was commonly know. Instead, they landed on Halo inside a Pelican after I was signaled Chief and another batch of Marines made it to the temple that the Prophet of Regret was hiding in.

Unfortunately, it was at bad timing. When they got there it was over, the Covenant had disintegrated the temple and presumably Master Chief and his Marines. Not only that, but they were discovered by Brutes as soon as they landed. Looks like the Chief didn't clear out the area beforehand after all like they were told. Nobody had even saw the Brutes anywhere on Delta Halo, it's nickname seeing as another Halo had been found beforehand. They waited for the Pelican to set down before attacking. Brute Shots and Fuel Rod Cannons rendered the Pelican inoperable and the ODSTs found themselves beaten senseless.

Getting back to the present, McHale saw that the attack had taken it's toll on his squad. Private Paul Anderson lay motionless near the foot of a Brute, his head apparently caved in by the giant's foot. Corporal Mohamed Al-Kali was sitting with his back against the Phantom's wall, but he was either dead or resting, Scott couldn't tell. Privates George and Richard Hodges were looking alive though as the constant turning of their heads indicated life.

Suddenly, he felt the Phantom stop and the saw the hatches open. He was promptly picked up by a gray haired Brute, along with his other living members of his fellow ODSTs, and taken off the ship. Looking around he saw he was inside the giant space station looking place he noticed while still in the In Amber Clad. Turning his neck to the left he noticed another Phantom go to the opposite part of this station, probably another batch of prisoners. The outside view quickly disappeared as he was led into a hallway and to an elevator. The anti-gravity platform led to a familiar looking place, a jail cell. Inside he found their were other prisoners, though not human. Angry, rabid looking Jackals snapped at them with the fire of destruction in their eyes. Richard was thrown in their cell, his screams hinting vividly at what was being done to him. George tried to break free, but was secured by a Brute and thrown into an empty cell. Al-Kali and McHale were tossed into a separate cell across from George's. The continuous migraine, the sight of George's sudden death, and the repulsive stench of the cells in general were too much to Scott McHale to handle and he drifted into unconsciousness yet again.

Elsewhere on High Charity a "demon" appeared out of thin air in a shroud of yellow energy to challenge the Prophets. The First Battle of High Charity had begun.

Not a bad idea, but I don't see why he can't mearly have been an ODST who got onto the ships with the drop pods. Are they all destroyed when it boosts away?

I just wanted the numbers to remain consistent.

Part 2

McHale was brutally awaken with a smack to his face by a hand, a human hand. Al-Kali was standing above him, purple blood soaking his armor.

"Come one Gunny, time to get moving" Al-Kali said. Still adjusting to his sudden awakening, Scott managed to utter "Report Corporal, what happened". "About ten minutes ago a brief power surge opened our cells, all of ours" Al-Kali answered obviously hinting to the purple blood smothered on his chest. McHale staggered out of the cell and saw the carnage, all the rabid Jackals were dead. Makes sense McHale thought to himself looking back at Mohamed,Al-Kali is a bear of a man and I doubt some wimpy birds would be able to take him.

Suddenly, thoughts of George surged in his mind, but he was relieved to see his other squad mate alive although something was amiss. Hodges was sitting down, head in his elevated legs. McHale walked up to George and said "C'mon Private, we're out of here". He was meet by the still helmet clad stare of George, but he could hint the signs of "What are you talking about?" on George's shielded face. Even so, George stands up and gives Scott a salute. Al-Kali walked up and handed them both Covenant Carbines and Plasma Pistols.

"Where did you find these Corporal?" McHale asked a little impressed that Al-Kali managed to secure weapons. "They kept them in containers just outside the door" Al-Kali replied "Seems odd when you consider it with the prisoners and what not". Scott smiled at the stupidity the Covenant employed with their jail security. George said nothing. "Oh" Al-Kali said "I think you'll need this" as he handed Scott his helmet. The vacuum seal of the helmet met his armor and he was ready to go.

Al-Kali walked up to the elevator console and attempted to summon an elevator. All he kept getting was an annoying beep and a red light. That's when George made an "up" motion with his hands at the elevator already coming down. "I didn't call that elevator, get down!" Al-Kali screamed. The trio crouched down behind the console to avoid being spotted.

The hum of the anti-gravity technology that powered the elevator was getting closer and closer. "On three, we attack whatever is on that elevator" McHale ordered as both Al-Kali and Hodges nodded. As soon as the elevator touched down, Scott and George opened a flurry of green projectiles on the unfortunate Grunts and Jackals that were on the elevator. Al-Kali, Needler in hand, lunged at a Jackal and slammed the needle side on the remaining Jackal's face. Puncture holes dotted the dead Jackal's face as Al-Kali ripped the Needler from it's face.

"Well men" McHalo said "Lets get going". The ODSTs stepped up on the elevator and went up.

Elsewhere on High Charity, a separate group of Marines on the other side of the Covenant's holy city are liberated by the Prophet's challenger.

Part 3

Hum, hum, hum, hum

The sound of the lift pulsated as it made it's climb up. McHale checked his ammo, deduced he had enough shots left before he needed to reload and slacked his arms. George had been a little too trigger happy and was on his second mag of Carbine ammo. Al-Kali just wiped spots of Jackal blood off the needles of the Needler, he took out two Jackals just using the Needler as a pistol sized mace.

When they reached the top floor, they rushed and crouched behind three indiduval pillars near a stone statue of a Prophet. "For a zealous race of religious nutjob aliens, they sure do like making statues of themselves" Ali-Kali remarked. "Is humanity any different Mouhamud?" McHale asked him "In any case, we need to find a vehicle to get out of here, do any of you men see a map?". They looked around their general area, but couldn't find anything at first. However, George walked towards a door and found a holographic display of High Charity. He signaled Al-Kali and McHale over with his arms and they began trying to deduce where they were.

"Okay, this display says we are...here" McHale pointed to a red dot on the hologram. "Hey Gunny, this display says there are some Phantoms roughly three klicks from this position, think we can make it?" Al-Kali asked. "Corporal, we're ODSTs, of course we can make it".

As they were about to leave, they noticed a monitor displaying feeds from around High Charity. One screen showed a large group of Grunts sleeping or eating from odd stuctures of sorts, another showed the Phantoms Al-Kali pointed out, and another showed Marines fighting ELites, Jackals and Grunts. McHale noticed something extrodinary as the fight contined, a green armored figure was leading the charge, it was Master Chief.

"I'll be damned boys, the Chief survived after all" McHale said almost with a shout. "How is that possible Gunny?" Al-Kali questioned "We saw the vaporized ruins of that temple when we were coming in from the In Amber Clad". "Doesn't matter how or why Mouhamud, all that matters is that we find hm and re-group" McHale answered sterly. They decided to grab a Phantom, grab it, and then find the Chief to get them the Hell out of here. The actual way to get out was still being formulated.

When they exited the room they were shocked to see equally surprised Brutes. The ODSTs opened fire and managed to kill two of the five Brutes before the others took cover behind the Prophet statue. Exhanges of red-hued plasma, grenades, and needles, and green projectiles were engulfing the room. One of the Brutes left his cover and rushed the squad. The Brute jumped up, landed, and roared while staring at George. Al-Kali saw the Brute sprint toward George and met the beast halfway with a tackle. The hairy ape had brought a Brute Shot with it, but dropped the thing when it was brought down by Mouhamud. George instincly scooped it up and slammed the large blade into the stunned creatures cranium.

"I could use some help over her!" McHale yelled at his fellow ODSTs who were perfomring a mini-victory dance over toppling the Brute. Like clockwork, they retrived their weapons and went back to the fight. This time, Al-Kali had the Brute Shot and led McHale and George in a charge of their own. They swept around the pillars and zeroed in on their targets, George and McHale filled one Brutes head with Carbine rounds while Al-Kali slashed the final Brutes throat with the Brute Shot's blade and pumped two grenade rounds in it's chest. When the smoke cleared, all three soliders were tired, but victorious.

Getting re-adjusted, they headed towards their objective, a Phantom loading dock three klicks from their position.

Elsewhere on High Charity, uneasy trust became full fledged hatred. The first shot was a Brute pumping an Elite in the head with Needler rounds. The Great Schism had started, and the ODSTs, and even the Master Chief, were in the middle of it.

Part 4

The ODSTs were sprinting nearer and nearer to their objective when an alien voice picked up over High Charity's loudspeaker system.

"Fear not, my brothers! The Sacred Icon is secure. It was Tartarus and his Brutes who took the Icon from the Flood, and for that they have our thanks."

Their translatos picked it up, but it still didn't make any sense to them. "Anyone got any ideas what that was about?" McHale asked. George shook his head and Al-Kali replied with a shurg of his shoulders. McHale looked around and said "Whatever it is, it probably isn't good, but we have to keep going".

SO they resumed their trak and kept going to the Phantom docks. They rounded a corner and headed for and elevator lift, but heard the sound of Elites coming around. Thinking quickly, McHale ordered his men to go into an exposed network of pipes they could crawl through. They squated in the pipes and could overhear the conversation the Elites were having.

"The Prophets have betrayed us brothers" a red Elite Major told his three blue Elite Minor soliders, "They order our death while placing those bastard swine the Brutes to lead them through the Great Journey!". "One of the Minors said "Indeed Major, what could cause such...such...heresy!". The Elites all grunted in apporval of the Minor's words.

"What do we have here Gunny?" Al-Kali whispered to McHale "Because it sounds like the Covenant are fracturing up because of something to do with the Brutes and this Icon thing". "Don't know Mouhamud, but you are probably right, it sounds like a good ol' fashioned civil war" McHale whispered back.

The Elites continued to stay by the lift for a good ten minutes and didn't budge. Probably guarding it so the Brutes or whoever is against their side of the civil war don't get up to the Phantoms[i] McHale concluded. He told the other ODSTs to just keep gong along the pipes, maybe it would lead them to the Phantoms anyway. As they were moving he could hear the loudspeaker utter...

"The Elites have failed to protect the Prophets, and in doing so, have put all our lives at risk. Let no warrior forget his oath, 'Thou, in faith, shall keep us safe, whilst we find the Path."

That was met with the angry roars of the Elites, anrgy roars that vibrated along the pipes as the ODSTs navigated them. Covenant pipeworks were somewhat similiar to human piping. Sure it was purple, like a lot of Covenant things, but it was still cylintrical and mixed in a web of crisscrossing intersections. However, the ground was somewhat sticky, for reasons McHale could not deduce. The answer came rather quickly as a Drone came flying around a corner, totally by surprise, and in the grasp of Al-Kali. The bugger was stunned, but Al-Kali took no chances, he crocuhed down and smashed the insectoids face into the piping. [i]Crap, the buggers must use their pipes to get around, how many more are in here?
McHale thought to himself.

Tension rose in the narrow corridor of Covenant pipes, did anything hear the brief struggle? Luckily, they were fine, the visible hallway they could see through the piping was clear of any enemies. They kept crouch walking until they heard another message through the loudspeaker...

"With my blessing, the Brutes now lead our fleets! They ask for your allegiance, and you shall give it."

Except, this time it sounded like it was nearer and not broadcasted over a P.A. McHale looked to his left and saw the source, a Prophet clad in a red robe flanked by a pack of Brutes and another Prophet.

Suddenly a loud boom echoed throughout High Charity.

The Prophets and Brutes stopped almost in front of them had they not been away by a distance. Seemed like they though it was time to make another announcment.

The Prophet said: "At this moment, the Council is gathered on Halo, to see the Icon secured." A large Brute with a huge hammer stepped beside the Prophet and added: "Rise, my brothers! Cast down the Elites!" His Prophet friend also spoke up again with: "There are those who said this day would never come. What have they to say now?" The Brute then said: "Once the towers are clear, we'll drive them from the lower district."

McHale made a gesture to his men to aim their weapons at the Brutes and Prophets. This could further shift the Covenant if they can kill them.

The red clad Prophet spoke up again: "I have listened to the Oracle, and confirmed our deepest hope. The Great Journey begins with Halo." His giant Brute with the hammer reposnded with: "The Elites are falling back to the Mausoleum. Fools! Their Arbiter can do nothing for them now!" The Prophet, almost smuggly, ended with: "Who would doubt the Prophets? What have they foretold that has not come to pass?"

They had heard enough. McHale, George, and Al-Kali openned fire on the cluster of Covenant. Two regular Brutes leaped in front of the Prophets and took the shots meant for them. The Brute, probably the leaderm roared "Assassins in the pipes, protect the holy ones!". His lackys tossed plasma grenades and openned fire with Plasma Rifles vaguely in the pipes. Quickkly, the trio of ODSTs sprint crouched along the pipeworks and found an open hole on the "floor".

They landed in a room filled with human equipment. It was the Grunts workshop, this was the place where they tried to figure out the humans technology. No time to rest however as thundering footsteps came to the rooms door. The ODSts hid behind a holoprojector/table right as the door openned.

The Brute leader walked inand looked around, rage in his eyes. He was stopped by the Prophet who spoke through the intercom. "Tartarus, come we must go" he said. "But noble Hierarch of Truth, I think the assassins fled in here through the pipeworks!" the Brute, now named Tartartus replied. "Every minute we spend here is a minute we delay the Great Journey" Truth said. Tartarus looked back, nodded, and walked away. "Come, we will take an alternate route to a different dock of dropships" Truth added.

They waited five minutes, enough time to feel the Brutes and Prophets were far away before moving. Moving away frm their position, the soliders noticed some human weapons. Checking their ammo from their Covenant weapons, the replaced them with the human ones. McHale took a Battle Rifle and M6C ,Al-Kali grabbed a Rocket Launcher and SMG, while George took an M90 Shotgun and slung a Sniper Rifle over his shoulder. After grabbing any ammo they saw, they left the room and continued to go for the Phantoms.

Elsewhere on High Chairty, out of the wreakge of the crashed In Amber Clad came a parasite.

Intresting story man! I loved reading the backstory of the battle of High Charity.

It isn't over yet, I still have some Parts left, in fact, here is Part 5.

Part 5

The ODSTs walked through a door to the Phantom dock, but were dismayed at what they found, or rather what they didn't find. No Phantoms were at the dock. "Damn it!" McHale grunted "Some Covenant bastards must have gotten the Phantoms before we go here". He walked around, knocked over a container, and sat on it. He looked up to notice that his men were looking at something, but it wasn't him. Craning his head to the left, he saw a large ship sitting in the middle of High Charity. It was triangular in shape, yet didn't look anything like the Covenant built. What he saw next made his heart sink, further ahead of the massive ship was a smoldering wall and in it engines.

It was the In Amber Clad. The ship must have been the cause of the loud boom he and his squad heard before they attempted to assassinate the Prophets. How?McHale thought to himself How did that happen?. Deep in his thoughts, he was interrupted by a tap on his shoulder by George. He pointed his Sniper Rifle at a platform probably a good mile away. McHale grabbed it and looked through the scope and saw several Phantoms take off while a green figure walked up. It was Master Chief.

McHale lowered the rifle and reported his findings to the Al-Kali and George. Right as he finished, tehy heard the screech of Pelicans impact different locations. One had hit where Chief was, two had hit areas near that direction, and one went over their heads. When they walked over to inspect the wreak, a figure stumbled out. It came closer and closer and jumped into exposed light. The creature was hideous, it's flesh resembled yellow pus, antennae protruded from it's chest, and it had the shape of a human. With a swipe of it's tentacle of an arm, Al-Kali was knocked down. Before it could finish him off, George pumped a buckshot round in it with his Shotgun.

"What the Hell was that thing?" was the first sentence George had uttered since they came to this place. "I don't know Hodges, but it was nasty and strong" Al-Kali replied as he stood up. "Great, first we have xenophobic aliens trying to kill us and now we have zombies" McHale said "Sounds like a -blam!- B-movie from the 1950's".

After getting re-adjusted they decided their only hope now was to find the Chief and join up with him. They went back through the door and re-traced their steps. When they went to the spot where they tried to kill the Prophet of Truth, they went in the direction he was led. Following this path would lead to where Chief went and maybe provide a chance to run into him. As they turned a corner, they heard Truth continue his propaganda...

"Shall we let the Flood consume our holy city? Turn High Charity into another of their wretched hives? No enemy has ever withstood our might. The Flood too shall fail."

"Great men, now we have a name for those uglies" McHale said jokingly. When they entered medical section, a battle was already being waged between the Flood, as they were called, and a team of an Elite, Grunts, and two Hunters. Dozens of small walking sac-like creatures jumped and swarmed the Grunts who were put up front on Plasma Turrets. Their pitiful screams were drowned out by the Hunters Fuel Rod Cannon as they were blasted away. From above, three human Flood forms and two Elite version landed on the two massive Hunters. The colony of worms spun and tossed the zombies while the Elite activated an Energy Sword and slashed at the Flood. It was in vain as more and more of the sac-like Flood came out of nowhere and swarmed over the Elite like ants on a picnic. The ODSTs decided to run off unless they to wanted to join that Elite, what happened to the Hunters they didn't care.

Entering what could only be labelled as a re-hab garden, they saw giant sacs developing on the rocks and tress with numerous Flood forms walking around. The ODSTs charged, McHale unloading three-round burst after burst with his Battle Rifle, Al-Kali ripped apart of their ranks with his SMG, while George punched through with his Shotgun. While they made it through, what was on the other side of the re-bad area wasn't much better. Three giant walking balloon looking Flood forms came at them. Al-Kali whipped out his Rocket Launcher and fired. The rocket detonated and destroyed the Flood, but several dozen sacs came from the remains. Those things are carriers! McHale thought. Mohamud dropped the bulky Rocket Launcher and unleashed a torrent of SMG rounds. McHale and George joined him, McHale using his pistol to conserve ammo while George kept using his Shotgun.

Once that problem was taken care of, they found an elevator and took it up. The P.A. came on again with...

"The parasite did not defeat the Forerunners... and it shall not defeat us" the Prophet of Truth said "Whosoever is gripped by fear, take heed. I am the Prophet of Truth. ...And I am not afraid. Noble Mercy is here at my side. His wise counsel ever in my ears."

Suddenly, a more sinister voice erupted from the intercom...

"We exist together, now... Two corpses in one grave."

"I don't think I need to repeat myself boys, you know what I want to say" McHale said. Their destination led them to a hallway with a plasma conduit on the roof. "Looks like a way to some power source Gunny" Al-Kali remarked "Think Chief might head that way?". "Only one way to find out Corporal" McHale replied as they walked into the reactor room of High Charity.

They saw six platforms, three in the distance and three neat them. "I have and idea gentlemen" George said "Maybe we can cause some chaos and wipe out a lot of these Flood things by destroying these reactors". "I'm for it" Al-Kali said to which McHale nodded in approval. They crossed a narrow walkway and each ODST jumped to an individual platform. Luckily, they each had small charges and applied them to the reactors. As they jumped back to the walkway, the pylons exploded. Three more left.

Suddenly, a sac came out of nowhere and latched itself on George. It started to burrow it's way inside of him despite his armor. Blood leaked through the small open portions of his armor until a greenish-yellow fluid replaced it. George started to morph and almost grabbed McHale, but was tackled by Al-Kali. They both dropped off the walkway and into the abyss below.

"NOOOOOO!" McHale yelled as the two figures went down, down, down.

Elsewhere on High Charity, Master Chief boards the Forerunner Dreadnought, Truth's ship, to save mankind and finish the fight.

Al-Kali and George were out of his sight. McHale banged his fist on the cool metal of the reactor room's walkway. He turned to the other three reactors, thought about detonating them, then thought against it. Somberly, he picked up his rifle and walked back to the doorway in which he entered. A sound emerged from the other side of the room, a running sound. When he turned around, his eyes bulged at what he saw, a "flood" of Flood. Elite, human, and now Brute Flood forms came rushing at him with those sac Flood forms bringing up the rear.

"Oh -blam!-" was the only thing McHale could utter before he took off, running as fast as his legs could go. When he had some distance he unleashed three bursts of his Battle Rifle, but only one Flood fell, it was human and the Elite Flood form hit by the bullets reflected them off it's still fuctioning energy shield. They were gaining fast, he could only continue running. He soon found himself in an open space, the Covenant arhictecture was taking on a fleshy look.

"I'm so dead, I'm so dead, I'm so -blam!- dead!" McHale yeled out in frustration. He could still hear the Floods footsteps gaining. That's when he noticed the downed Pelican that had crashed nearby, it's holding bay open and spilling over with equipment. Was his luck turning?

He grabbed a Rocket Launcher, two conatiners of flamethrower fuel, and the actual flamethrower. When he went back, he had the Laucnher over his shoulder and was dragging the flamethrower. When the Flood appeared, they met the explosive payload of a rocket. Not wanting to reload, he discarded the rockets and picked up the flamethrower. "BURN!" he shouted at the top of his lungs as he lite up any Flood remaining with fire. The flames erupted from the nozzel and toasted the flesh of any parasites that entered the weapons range.

When his threat ended, he had used all of his first batch of fuel. DamnMcHale thoight with a laugh I work fast. He examined the bodies up close now and saw sadded at what he saw. Each Flood form, human, Elite, and Brute, all looked back at him with the look of fear in their faces. Fear was a universal emotion after all. More Flood noises echoed off High Charity's walls and that snapped McHale out of his meloncholy mood. He needed to hide, not become one of them even if he died of natural causes. McHale was an ODST, not a parasites plaything.

When he went back in the direction of the reactor room, he saw a hallway that led to a locked door. On the wall next to the door was a kaypad, which he promptly smashed with the heavy flamethrower. A room full of pipes was behind the door. When he entered, he saw another keypad and he broke that one as well. The door behind him closed with a locking thud. He walked to the very end, sat down, and waited for the end to come. A voice entered his mind, an evil voice...

"This is not your grave, but you are welcome in it".

"Yeah?" McHale replied "I guess I have to thank you".

So he sat there, in sadness and triumph at the same time, and let go.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Many Weeks Later...

Spartan-117 was shifting through the Flood-infested wreakage of High Charity. As the UNSC and Covenant Seperatists deativated Truth's near-activation of the Ark, it flew overhead. He had a promise to keep, to go back and retrive Cortana.

"Don't make a girl promise if you can't keep it" were her words.

A small explosion echoed through the station suddenly, causing Chief to find out what it was. When he entered a hallway that led to a locked door, he saw a hole in the wall that led to a room of pipes. When he craned his neck to the left, he saw a figure, an ODST with a flamethrower near his body. Who is this? Chief pondered How did he get here?. None of those questions would be answered now, so he did the only sesible thing, and that was take the flamethrower. Before Chief left for good, he took the ODSTs dog tags too. It read...

Gunnery Sergeant Scott McHale
USNC Orbital.Drop.Shock.Trooper
I.D. #2476579

But on the other side it read...

Feet first into Hell

The End

I'm 23, I have a house, dog, girlfriend, job and I have no interest in any fanboyism so if you're thinking about sending me a childish PM, don't be surprised when I don't call back.

That was a great read, fix all your spelling mistakes though.

I've never seen the ODST in Cortana. Does anyone mind taking a screenshot of it.
