I am a member of the Grand Rapids Frag Pile (the largest group in Michigan) and when we hit 55 members I was impressed. We are a Bungie fan group that has bean around a while and are (mostly) local Halo players. We still even have LAN parties (down from once a month to once every two or three months.) To celebrate us hitting 55 I searched out the largest Bungie.net groups and intended on interviewing thier founders to do a write-up to submit for the 7th Column spotlight. Well it turns out our 55 wasn't all that impresive around the US, and life prevented me from doing the interviews and write-up too.

If someone is interested in running with this idea feel free. If I was doing it I would interview the founder and/or staff of some of the groups to see what makes them a successful group. You could then write a story and post it here or submit it to Bungie.

When I did the survey of the groups I was looking for the largest group from each state and also highlighting any group over 50 members. The following list is as far as I got. I don't remember how comprehensive it was, it's a start anyway.

You will find below thier number of current members, and thier state. You will also see a numer behind that info ie (55), that was thier member count 4 months ago and will give you an idea if the group is growing or shrinking. Below thier name and link is thier groups description.

Remember this is just a sample of the largest 7th column groups... Enjoy and if you are brave enough to do interviews and a story, good luck.

Right. Those are alot of big chapters. What I intended to do was find medium to active chapters and do a "spotlight" type thing to highlight them and find out what makes them successful. Just because it is a lage chapter doesn't mean it's active and successful.

The list doesn't matter so much as the idea behind the list. Finding quality groups, that is what is at the heart of this idea. There are chapters devoted to a vast array of things. One for the artist in you, one for the conversationalist in you, one for those who like H2 and one for those who like Gnop (maybe.)

The challenge is to find quality groups to interview. I ran across pleanty groups that were large but were just dead wood. As a matter of fact I remember seeing one group that was large and the founder posted a news item saying he was moving to a different chapter and allowing only a select few back in. You could tell this chapter had been dead for a long time, but it had alot of members :)

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

LOL your list is unnnacurate. You left out some major groups.\

The list is very incomplete! I agree. It's more of a snapshot, a poor, outdated, unfinished snapshot. It certainly wouldn't be a complete list without Mr. Smiley's Xbox Lounge or Xbox 360, and the list could go on I am sure.

I looked at your group, it's large and active (as far as can tell) that's good!

If you post your groups name PLEASE, post what you are doing to make your group successful. Not just an advertisement. This is not the place to post an ad.

If you are going to post in this thread try helping out other groups. Or help figure out a way to write an article highlighting a successful group.

Maybe you could get a couple partners, join an active group and then co-author an article to "spotlight" that group. Or maybe we could do that as a forum.

Number of members isnt everything. ;-) A lot of those chapters on the list are inactive now, even if they have high numbers of members.

That isn't a ad he said give a discription of what your group is about so I gave one. So don't be so quick to jump on someone.

Jump on someone? I was pointing out the fact that you'd posted a link to your group. What really got me is the way you said "how could you not include" as though your group were extremely important.

The Grand Rapids frag pile is successful because of the quality people, people who contribute. The group is eally centered around LAN parties, without those I think it would have bean DOA. Now it has migrated to XBL, and that keeps it going in between the LAN parties. (FYI- we had 38 people at the last LAN and 50 some at the one before that.)

One of the forum topics that is the most popular is a bragging topic "1 gamestats page is worth a thousand words" where people post about thier best H2 XBL games.

Someone else writes some really good fan fiction. And that is good for some activity on the group.

We don't trash talk (in good fun) before and after LAN parties like we used to and I miss that. :)

I know there are other quality groups out there, I would like to see an updated "Spotlight". Maybe that's something that the The 7th Column Council could help with.

Ok I will update it soon. Also to Psyched the link isn't to a bungie group its to a web-site not affilated with bungie that isn't advertising a bungie group. If you we're so quick to jump on people you'd know this. Also psyched my group is important.

Totally agree. Btw, I wonder what's the largest group of each forum?
