Subject: A Question Regarding an Optional Application of Custom Avatars

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

I know that the prospect of getting custom avatars has been beaten to death... But I haven't seen this one asked:

Would it be possible to get custom avatars as a group-only affair? The management of profain avatars would be taken off Bungie's hands, in a way... Group moderators can get rid of users who insist on being profane and indecent. I don't know if the Bungie could get sued for having a user on their site have a bad avatar, whether the group be public or not... so maybe it's not a good idea. I also don't know anything about site management, so I don't know how hard it would be to make, or whether it would be worth the time, since people have other things to do as well.

I'm just wondering if it's possible. And if this is a new idea, I think it would be neat if it were implemented. Many of the old forum-regulars would probably appreciate it... the've been around long enough and some have earned themselves a reputation... Custom avatars might help convey this, in a way (then again, since there are -blam!-s, it might not).

And of course, it's allways neat to see what things people can come up with, isn't it?

Merely a suggestion... I don't know if it's original, but it's some food for thought for now.

Hmm... Well, I like the idea, but we have so many groups on The 7th Column. So, having custom avatars could kill bandwidth...

The Bandwith is a huge problem.

And irresponsible group administration could lead to some group members viewing innapropriate material....

I had considered the irresponsible group admin problem... perhaps group admin should be something that can actually be earned, rather than created?

And even though I use the internet, how it works is beyond me right now. The term, "Bandwith" is pretty alien to me. I'm going to take a computer science class to hopefully clear up some of this sort of thing... but right now I don't really know what it means... only that you have to abide by limits.

Well right now they're trying to improve on the way b.net works right now. Making it faster and having less errors. Thats why they haven't put the search in. They want it to work, and work good.

I couldn't care how long it takes

The thought had crossed my mind some time ago. I put it to rest when I figured, it's just too much. Each group would have to have unlimited upload space on Bnet, Bungie would have to figure a way to split the Forum systems and split profiles, I just wouldn't imagine, even if they could do it, that it'd be on their top priorities list. And, as said above, people are disruptive and even though at the minute there might seem to be no potential for abuse, somebody somewhere would find a way.

The custom avatars would take too much space thus slowing down bungie...

Not bad an idea though...

I belive this actually has been suggested before. However, as Psyched correctly points out, Bungie would need to split them to distinguish between chapters and the main forums. I did think that one way to stop inappropriate avatars from being used would be to have avatars for chapters avaliable by an admin who grants a member to have one. So basicly how it works here. The admin of the chapter would have a selection of avatars (approved by Bungie) and the admins would be free to grant members a cutom avatar from the selection set by Bungie - which would apply to all chapters.

*Sgt

I think what would be good is if Bungie could keep up what they are doing now *giving out custom avatars for contributions to the community, etc.* but maybe on a larger scale.. there are what, ten people on the forums *excluding mods* right now who get to have custom avatars? And I know there are plenty of people here who deserve it. Custom av's could be given out on a broader range of things. Because some people *including me* aren't that artistic and we can't do themes that well ^_^

Very good point. I believe Bungie are working on some more ways in which people can contribute to the community and recieve rewards (custom avatars)

It won't be implemented. It's simply too much work for a little thing. I can't look into Bungie.net's coding, but I'm sure it would take quite a bit of work and extra processes to implement this. Except for the fixing of bugs, Bungie doesn't really change things. They only tend to create new things, and once finished, that's that.

Of course, I could be wrong, but so far, I haven't really seen any evidence proving the contrary.

I'll be on my own side.

Good idea, but, like everyone is saying, it would kill the bandwidth. Bungie has enough traffic as it is, what with all the people checking out their stats and stuff like that, it would make B.net really slow.

By the way, how's Japan, Shai?
