Measuring distances in Halo 3: LB-RB-LS-RS-DUP-A is used to turn coordinates on. The coordinates are in World Units, and one WU is ten feet = 3.05m (confirmable using objective indicators). I drove a mongoose to the edges of valleys and recorded the XY coordinates, then turned the measured values to distances.

Measuring distances in Halo 1: Using an oddball and Sidewinder, the running speed was measured as 100m in 15s. The speed is the same in Halo 3; this means that the same distance means the same thing in both games. I ran along the length of the valleys, then perpendicular to that, and recorded the times with a stopwatch.

And now to the results:

Assault on the Control Room

Zulu valley: 270m * 150m
Scorpion valley: 200m * 90m
Mortar valley (walkable area): 240m * 170m
Underground bridge area: 140m across
Tunnel slope to canyon B: Length 320m
Circular canyon: 320m * 170m
Spiral Path area: 120m * 80m
Twin Bridges valley: 300m * 150m
Control Room canyon: 310m * 150m

Total snowfield area: 240000 m^2

The Ark

Prowler valley: 250m * 120m
HEV valley: 210m * 165m
Crashed vessel canyon: 240m * 80m
Intersection: about 80m * 80m
Famine canyon: 170m * 65m
TBE area: 140m * 100m
Forward Unto Dawn LZ: 300m * 190m
Wall door valley: 310m * 220m
Cartographer sandbox: 710m * 320m

Total desert area: 470000 m^2

Howewever, the sandbox is 230000 m^2 in size, making AotCR and the pre-wall desert have almost exactly the same area.

The playable portion of the Citadel Cirque is strangely enough almost exactly 200WU*200WU, giving it the area of 360000 m^2.

Well, that is interesting...

Just as I've always believed. Halo 3 has so many limits to exploration, you only get access to a fraction of the level areas.

no. nonono

Very interesting, apart from the bit where you said you drove a mongoose.

What? All the measured areas are walkable, I drove a mongoose there in Halo 3 and ran there in Halo 1.

Fine. They put up barriers because they don't expect you to get outside the linear path. People just find plenty of ways to get around them.
