I know there has been a lot of talk about the new Covey weapons and some specualtion about the Elite "sniper rifle", but I think I'll add my view to the mix. I'll probably get flamed and called an 'ignorant n00b', however, I think that I have some proof (if now overwhelming proof) that the new Covey weapon is a sniper rifle.

First, we know the the Plasma Pistol and the Rlasma Rifle have stayed in the game without any noticable change to the models (besides some awsome new detailing and bump mapping!) because of this screenie:

Pistol and Rifle

So that eliminates the possibility of the gun in the next screen being either one of those two.( And we've hopefully all seen the new needler model...It isn't even close to the gun in the next shot) So... Anyway....Let's look at the next screenie:

Sniper?

I believe this is a new gun rather than, say, a remake... The only possible thing it could be is the Fuel Rod gun, but I'm doubting that, so let's move on. You know I think it is a new weapon, and you probably also know that I think it is the Covey "sniper rifle". So le'me explain why:

1) The long barrel. None of the other Covey weapons have it (except, of course, the FR Gun). So that suggests to me that this gun fires some sort of large projectile that needs to fire to fairly long distances. There is only one gun I can think of that fires a large bullet to long distances... Guess what it is? That's right, the sniper rifle!

2) The scope. Atleast I think that's what the bump is... I could be wrong. But let's assume it's a scope. If it is, that means the gun needs to fire a projectile very accurately.

These to things leave me to conclued that the gun not only fires over a long distance, but it also does it accurately. The two guns that made it into Halo 2 that fire over long distances with good accuracy are the Battle Rifle and the Sniper Rifle....So I think the gun is a Covey SR, and if not that a Covey BR.

Thanks for reading. You may now flame me to your heart's content.

Maybe it is a shotgun. Or just a bigger rifle.

Yeah... I though I remembered him saying something about that. Frankie is the -blam!-. I can't wait until this week's update!

Anywho, can you refresh my memory? What update was the thing about the Covey Rifle in?

Quick analysis though, why would you want to have two elites with sniper rifles standing guard at a door?

Think about it.....

looks good, although the new human battle rifle has a scope aswell...

And it doesnt make much sense for two elites to stand guard infront of a door with just sniper rifles.... you would think one of them qould have a plasma rifle or something incase some humans got in close....

That is true... But what else would they be? I don't think you'd have Elites stand at a door with FR Guns either...

That would leave the Covey BR theory... But wouldn't a sniper rifle be more fun?

That is a good point. Why would you have two sniper guards at a door? Unless it was down a long hallway. But that makes me even more right about a shotgun or bigger rifle.

I honestly don't think its a snier rifle even though the solid facts. If it was a sniper rifle why would 2 elites (from that one screenshot) be guarding a door with sniper rifles. I say no. I think its a gun that we haven't thought about yet. I think it will be different than what most people think it is.

I still think they're grenade launchers that fire smaller, more compact plasma grenades that explode on impact.

Hmm... I never though about it that way before. That is an interesting question.

Now that I look at it some more... It could definately be that, but I doubt it. I don't think Bungie would change the sword that much. But then again, who can really know the Bungie way?

Oh, and thanks to whoever complimented me on my pics...How nice of you... (And no I did not miss the sarcasm in your post. Did you miss mine?)

I'm almost 100% sure its not a sniper rifle, because of a couple reasons
first, 2 elites would defintelly not be using sniper rifles infront of a door.
second, you'll notice it cant be a scope because the eyepiece doesnt have an exit.
third, the "scope" looks likes its an ammo cartridge because if you look at the left elites gun, there is almost no other place to reload. (i know its gotta be reloadable because frankie told us how sweet the elites reload now)
and forth, I still dont think the barrel is long enough to be a sniper rifle, so my best bet is its either a gun similar to the plasma rifle, probably a weapon equivalent to the battle rifle, except full automatic or it might be a shot gun type of weapon, remember it doesnt have to be plasma or needles, its not like Bungie isnt creative enough to make a new type or element for the convenant to use as weaponry. Anyways this is just what I think, I could really careless if you curse at me or if you agree, thats up to you to decide

The Master Chief emerged from his code. After seeing his dynamically lit realtime shadow, he went back for 9 more months of development.

Behold the power of the Originals, the Gods Axeone-Neurone.

Look at the orginal Covenant sniper rifle. I does not have a scope you can see either.

Again, with the door thing: Completely true. I agree with you. It would be odd for two Elites to defend a door with just SRs... But I have some possible explanations:

1) The screenie could be multiplayer.
2) It could just be Bungie showing off... I mean, they could have stuck the Elite models with these guns in front of some door and rendered it (doubt it though)

or

3) The Elites could be better with the SR at close range.

Hmm. About the 'scope'... Um. I honestly don't know how to reply to this... It does sort of look like a cartridge. I have one half-baked solution that is probably reaching just a bit:

The 'scope' might not need an exit be becuase the nose of the gun has some sort of infered sensor? Again, that's probably reaching too much... But it's an idea.

PS-ish:
I don't know if I've said this yet, but I'm not totally 110% sure that the gun is a Sniper... I'm just trying to offer an explanation and possibly spark a debate (I think I did both)

I just noticed something... On the back of that gun there is another hole... Could that possibly be the scope?

The New Elite Weapon, click here.

I like the notion of a sniper rifle and while I'd argue that it may not be a scope (at least a typical one that is shown at the top of this thread), it will have an element of "zooming in" and taking single fire shots.

Well...I've pretty much discarded the idea that the thing in the middle of the gun is a scope (some one pointed out that it looked more like a cartridge, and I agree)... But what about the hole on the end? Could that be it? It seems likely to me.

It doesn't look like a scope according to my close-up in my above post, but that doesn't mean there is a zoom. The M6D didn't have a scope, yet the HUD system for Spartans allowed zooming capabilities.
