Subject: Posting Pictures in Forum Posts?!?!?

If you were lurking around the Reach Forum recently, you might have seen this thread about an adorable character called Oonsk, created from cropping Kat's shoulder armor piece into the figure of a little guy.

More suprising however, Shishka was able to put a picture of Oonsk in his post using [img] tags. Although when he did the picture appeared in all of it's beauty, anyone who quoted him had the image in the post replaced with a "[Image Removed]".

I just have a few questions:
1) How long have you been able to do this?
2) Is it possible that group administrators could be given this power in a website update?

Obviously there would be some problems with such a feature, as people would be able to post pr0n into their group threads, but is that really any different that posting URLs to pr0n?

We were having a discussion about this in that particular thread, but its better suited for this forum so I decided to start it up here.

Your thoughts, B.net?

Update: Yeah. After nearly a year I don't really like this idea anymore, particularly after my group got spammed with naked pictures of Old Men. We do just fine without images cluttering up our forums.

What's up? You can call me Phil. I love to play Battlefield 3!

There's an [img] tag, but apparently only certain employees are allowed to use it.I remember Frankie posting a picture in the forums a long time ago. Here's a picture Frankie posted back in '07.
I think it would be nice if Group Admins could post pictures. That would suck if a group conqueror got admin powers and started posting pr0n everywhere.

The legend lives on.

Hypermnesia n An exceptionally exact or vivid memory, especially as associated with certain mental illnesses.

Sapphire.

Whoa, that's weird. I've never seen that done before...

I don't see a point in making it possible for group admins to do that. I can just post a link; like you said, there's no difference. Not to mention, there are user scripts for that I think.

  • 01.12.2010 10:12 AM PDT

Remember,
It is easy to be male
it is another thing to be a man.

I know that certain employees can post images within posts such as Achronos,
(proof) but i have no idea how long they have been able to do that.

While pr0n is an issue, loading times are a bigger issue. Images take way more time to load than text and if everyone just posted pictures the forum would be slow. Also images can destroy the layout of the forum.

Of course, allowing images in posts is not an impossibility, many forums do it. It is possible that it is now tested by the Bungie employees before we get the chance to use it. However, I don't think we'll ever get the possibility to post pictures.

I've only seen employees do that. For reference, you might want to get the Pentathlon thread on the main page. Employees are posting pictures like that a lot.

I think its mods and employees only.
Although it could be even more resetricted than that.
I really don't see us needing too, but meh.
I guess it would be useful, but until then we can use the good old fasioned link to a photobucket image.
BTW, pr0n?

I dunno, its just that I thought I had a firm grasp of reality in this text based world of the b.net forums, the possibillity of conveying my ideas using pictures directly in a thread seems exciting, taking posting to a new level. It must have been how old people felt when they watched the Wizard of Oz for the first time, or how A. Square must have felt when he first met the Sphere...

Yeah, good times...

Of course. You are immediately exposed to images. Links, on the other hand, allow you to view the URL first and then decide whether to click or not.

You are MOSTLY right. It's certain designated users with admin rights only -- basically Bungie's "community-oriented" employees only. Moderators can't do it.

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

GasmeJunkieJim did it before, it could have been before a site update though.

I am mostly intrigued that the slightest movement from an employee around here sends everyone over the top. It's sort of funny.

I do believe you, but writing [Image Removed] proves nothing. That can be done by everyone. ;) I guess you "tried" to post a picture, but there's no way for us to tell the difference.

My suprise that employees could post pictures in forum posts was compounded by the awesomeness of Oonsk which sent my excitedness meter into overdrive.
