Dear Bungie,

We ask, is the tragedy in Haiti a marketing opportunity for your company? This g4tv.com report paints Bungie as being benevolent for offering up to 77K and some unspecified proceeds from T-Shirt sales to the victims of Haiti. I'm not sure I see it the same way.

Halo ODST sold over 2 million units at $60 a pop on the first day alone. The first day of release. Now, I know thats not all profit, but I think its safe to say you guys are way in the black on that one, think you could find a little more than 77K from you advertising budget? This to me seems to be a publicity and marketing campaign for your product. Special playmate, character emblems, Bungie T-Shirts, its all to extend the Halo brand while being disguised as charity.

Bungie, We, the gamers dare you to do better. You have flourished because we repeatedly buy your products, we demand that you send more to Haiti, and not in some empty campaign to raise awareness, no, we expect you to write a huge check, issue a press release and call it a day.

Respectfully,

Your fans.

Ok, OP. Go into your wallet, pull out 77k. Now do better. 77K is hella lot of Cash, i think I'd be happy with 77K and not complaining.

Seeing as after Microsoft take and paying 200 some odd employees to work for a year without a consistent income for the company, one would think 77,000 is quite a lot, I mean that's 1.5 people to work for a year.

I don't think you comprehend the magnitude of what has happened in Haiti.

I have donated generously. By percentage of personal wealth, far more generously than Bungie is committing.

I've read that pure profit, Bungie made 300 million on Halo 3 alone. 77K is just part of their advertising budget to promote the brand. Its a shameless publicity grab.

If you ever try and fail.....erase all evidence that it was you who tried

Jesus calm down man how bout they don't give anything at all huh? If they hadn't of even said they were going to donate you wouldn't have jumped on them like this you bastard

If your going to give the 77K give it simply to do what is right, don't do it to exploit a tragedy in order to promote your brand.

"Apparently people don't like the truth, but I do like it; I like it because it upsets a lot of people. If you show them enough times that their arguments are bull-blam!-, then maybe just once, one of them will say, 'Oh! Wait a minute I was wrong.' I live for that happening. Rare, I assure you."-Lemmy of Motorhead

Yes, I'm the guy who had the Flood admit to being furries.

Why do people imagine companies as a bunch of fat mustached bastards sitting a top a mountain of money?

Calm your ass down. The placement of the Superintendent is intended to go in gist with fans, people who have not yet bought the product won't know what that square guy is, it doesn't say "HALO" in huge font on the shirts, do they?

So it would be illogical if it were an advertisement stunt. People already know the Halo name anyway, so it wouldn't help.

Bungie went with a theme for a donation that their fans can relate too and makes it more interesting, more willing to donate to Haiti, not Bungie, mind you.

Like what Tide did for Katrina, it wasn't an advertisement stunt, they just had the equipment and stuff that could really help those people out.

Not every company is a Rockafeller, don't be so rash.

LOL wut??

The T-Shirt has the Bungie logo on the rear, and you have to play their game in order for them to donate?

Uum the only people who know about it is the people who play Halo anyways so it doesn't matter

Playing Halo 3 is like participating in a tella-thon. You are playing the game and raising money at the same time. When you play Halo 3, you have no influence on the other donation project Bungie has going on, the proceeds of their store and shirt. Yeah, did you know they got two deals? You can play the game and raise $77,000 or buy the shirt from the store which is added with the profits from that.

Who cares if their logo is on the shirt? If it's on the rear, I don't see a huge problem seeing as I don't know many people staring at the back of my shirt when I am in front of them.

God forbid Bungie actually do anything nice for the world...

You should donate something. Do you know what happened. A 7.0 earthquake happened killing more than 10,000 people. Then a another earthquake at 6. something killing 2,500 or more so donate something. I got three schools to donate more than 500 dollars for Hati

Become the hunter.

Wow, it's not likes it's a non profit company dedicated to philanthropy. I really don't feel like they're exploiting this tragedy at all. Sure they could have just donated the $77,000, but by involving the community in this way they grab the attention of who knows how many potential donors.

What they're doing is really neat in my opinion, but if you really feel that way its totally possible to contribute directly to the Red Cross or other organizations helping out.

Anyone with common sense would realize this is a marketing ploy. 77 thousand will hardly make a difference, but they will get A LOT of ads out. Our government has already given them 100 million dollars, and why does it take money to help other humans? Shouldn't we just help them because we care?

77K is hardly going to help them? I didn't realize that 77K couldn't help buy water and food for the 1.5 million homeless right now. I guess we shouldn't donate anything, if we can ONLY donate 77K.

Ignorance is bliss isn't it?

I guess you failed to read what I wrote, our government has given them 100 MILLION dollars already, and how exactly does cloth and zinc help them get water? It doesn't! How about thinking before posting?

Not to be technical here but I would HAVE to think before posting. It's impossible not to.

It doesn't matter if the government has given 100 million dollars. Every amount, large or small counts. It's the same as saying that even though the government helps out with supporting efforts in 3rd world countries, that I should stop donating money to my foster child in Africa because they're already helping.

Money is the currency used to BUY those items. All material goods cost money, it'll help cover the cost of transportation of that water and food, and the actual cost of buying the products.

Laughing At Nothing

Oh, I'm sorry I thought this website was about Halo, I guess I'll be exiting stage right.

P.S.

The shirt says "Bungie Fans for Quake Relief" not "Haiti/Halo: Same Thing, Give us Money"

Also, the proceeds from the shirt are different from the 77,000 Dollars they are giving from my understanding. The fans donate money for the shirt, the company 77K.

  • 01.20.2010 5:31 PM PDT

Everything costs money. It's life. We're at a time where economy means everything.

The point of this is not the fact that things cost money to buy, it's the fact that Bungie is trying to aid in the relief efforts.

Now is not a time to "teach them how to industrialize" now is the time to help the 1.5 million homeless get back on there feet and prevent them from starving.

100 million is not enough money, otherwise all other relief efforts would not be continuing. The money from Bungie and all other sources are going towards helping these people.

It's arrogant to say that the money being used to feed and house these starving people is a waste if we are not "teaching them" at the same time.

  • 01.20.2010 5:33 PM PDT

Anyways, I'm done with this.

I'm finishing up my University homework and then going to do my part in helping Haiti by playing some Halo.

(I've also donated some cold hard cash if anybody wants to whine that all I've done is played Halo).

Exactly my point, why does it cost money to do those things? It shouldn't, that's putting a price on life. And again, we've already given them 100 million dollars, that's probably more than their entire country, they just slapped concrete everywhere, that's not expensive. And giving them money won't help them at all unless you teach them how to industrialize, otherwise it becomes a waste of time and money.

You give money because you can't fly Boeing 747 for free indefinatly, it cost money to pay for the fuel to fly and not every company can take that dent in their pocket books.

Not to mention that right know it's not important for them to industrialize but stabilize.
