Money is the currency used to BUY those items. All material goods cost money, it'll help cover the cost of transportation of that water and food, and the actual cost of buying the products.

Exactly my point, why does it cost money to do those things? It shouldn't, that's putting a price on life. And again, we've already given them 100 million dollars, that's probably more than their entire country, they just slapped concrete everywhere, that's not expensive. And giving them money won't help them at all unless you teach them how to industrialize, otherwise it becomes a waste of time and money.

You must not have a basic understanding of economics. Sure, it would be great if everyone gave money, resources, and captial to help these poor people for free, but unfortunately that is not how it works. No one is going to just give something away, not very much anyway, and if you limit all donations of food, water, planes, etc. to the Red Cross to be free, then you will never get enough resources to do anything. If everybody donates a little cash to the Red Cross so they can use the combined funds to buy aid for these people, you will increase the amount of aid by many, many fold.

Like I said, this is basic economics.

I disagree with the original post (I do not believe Bungie "exploits tragedy", and do believe that raising awareness is just as important as personal donations), but I have to admit, it is rather well put together. It's definitely not asshatery, as far as I'm concerned, but some good feedback from someone who has a different point of view than mine.

Good open letter, IMO.

Dear Bungie,

We ask, is the tragedy in Haiti a marketing opportunity for your company?

I don't see Bungie using Haiti as a marketing opportunity.

They aren't trying to upsell the rest of their merchandise. You can buy the shirt to help spread awareness and simutaneously donate to their aid.

  • 01.20.2010 6:17 PM PDT

so would you rather not have them do anything? every little bit helps no matter how small

you know why they call it the xbox 360 cus when you see it you turn 360 degrees and walk away enjoy your crappy games kid

Bungie is an independant company. Giving $77,000 is a lot in itself. You can't expect every company to do this; the world just doesn't work this way. Yeah, that'd be ideal if it did, but it doesn't.

Where's does it benefit if it gives away $77,000 without any return, no matter what the cause?

That'd be a lot of money down the drain. Ask bigger companies. Right now, Bungie has found a way to gain popularity from their game while helping Haiti. That's what any business with common sense would do.

I think they are donating a great amount of money. They are not a massive company with hundreds of thousands of dollars to donate. $77,000 is a lot for a company like Bungie. At least they are donating more than most other companies.

I honeslty think that bungie is doing something rare here. I haven't heard of ANY video game companies ever giving money like that away to charity.

Its the hardship and tales of self sacrifice in life that makes us stronger people or, of course, an Overshield and freshly spawned Spartan Laser.

Jesus calm down man how bout they don't give anything at all huh? If they hadn't of even said they were going to donate you wouldn't have jumped on them like this you bastard

If your going to give the 77K give it simply to do what is right, don't do it to exploit a tragedy in order to promote your brand.

Dude its up to $77,000 just for the players online who wear the special emblem while playing. All the proceeds from the store are seperate and are an addition to the 77,000. Also, it isnt some unspecified amount, every dime they make on Bungie manufactured merchandise goes straight to the red cross.

The issue is not so much the amount as it is tied to a corporate promotional gimmick.

Also, for the record Bungie has made profits in the hundreds of millions.

Ok, OP. Go into your wallet, pull out 77k. Now do better. 77K is hella lot of Cash, i think I'd be happy with 77K and not complaining.

I don't think you comprehend the magnitude of what has happened in Haiti.

I have donated generously. By percentage of personal wealth, far more generously than Bungie is committing.

Pics or it didn't happen

Maybe if it was Microsoft only donating $77,000 I could see outrage considering they are a bigger company. Bust seeing as Bungie is still a smaller company with a non-continuous stream of revenue, I think they are doing fine. I mean, they have TWO sources of capital to give to Haiti.

The rampant fanboyism is amazing.

A Bungie employee could probably kill your puppy and you will still make excuses for them.

Dear Bungie,

We ask, is the tragedy in Haiti a marketing opportunity for your company? This g4tv.com report paints Bungie as being benevolent for offering up to 77K and some unspecified proceeds from T-Shirt sales to the victims of Haiti. I'm not sure I see it the same way.

Halo ODST sold over 2 million units at $60 a pop on the first day alone. The first day of release. Now, I know thats not all profit, but I think its safe to say you guys are way in the black on that one, think you could find a little more than 77K from you advertising budget? This to me seems to be a publicity and marketing campaign for your product. Special playmate, character emblems, Bungie T-Shirts, its all to extend the Halo brand while being disguised as charity.

Bungie, We, the gamers dare you to do better. You have flourished because we repeatedly buy your products, we demand that you send more to Haiti, and not in some empty campaign to raise awareness, no, we expect you to write a huge check, issue a press release and call it a day.

Respectfully,

Your fans.

It's either 77k or 777k

You MUST remember, Bungie doesn't get all the sale profits/cash, MS get A LOT of the profits.

The rampant fanboyism is amazing.

I'm finding this thread to be a little amazing.

Bungie donates a sizable amount of money to Haiti because of the earthquake and you say they are using it as a marketing ploy and you demand that they to donate more because they are successful.

Are you also knocking on the door of every video game developer and publisher if not every door you can get to, from the CEO of Goldman Sachs down to the panhandling at the homeless shelter, all to demand that the person who opens it donates to Haiti?

Instead you're looking the gift horse in the mouth.

Now see, your open letter was fine by me, though I disagreed.
This, however, is uncalled for. God forbid some people would actually like Bungie on a forum dedicated to one of its games, right?

Before you say it's fanboyism, answer to the the points that have been done.

How much did you donate? Bungie is donating $77,000 and you're whining? srsly go whine somewhere else

  • 01.21.2010 12:55 PM PDT

Never presume to speak for all gamers or bungie fans.

I am both and I do not hold or support your point of view.

Bungie is giving generously and is giving fans a chance to participate in that.

The fact you were able to personally match that donation amount and acceede it owing to your personal wealth does not give you the right to question the motivations of others.

Shame on you.

Why not just give the 77K issue a press release and be done with it.

Why the physical marketing, forcing people to play thier game to gain donations, putting their logo on the back of a T-Shirt, why not just give the cash to do the right thing?

Its because everyones favorite radio station is WII FM

Whats in it for me.
