Subject: Pointless SMG/Pistol Silencer

I was a little excited about the SMG being the main weapon again, and that it was going to be silenced. What really disappointed me is that the silencer has no effect on its use in stealth. Like, you can't shoot a grunt with a pistol in the head and get away with it. All the brutes/grunts will start attacking you instantly. The silenced SMG was just a more accurate SMG with muffed sound and a scope, really. Same with pistol. Halo 2 pistol with muffed sound and scope.

Maybe because they see him die right next to them.

If you take them out without the dead bodies being seen you will get away with it

They still shouldn't zero in on you the way they do. Make them run for cover, look randomly to find the shooter, etc, before they home in on you.

Greetings from Sydney.

I do agree how that if the weapon is silenced, then the enemy shouldn't be able to detect you. It'd be much more fun, but probably a little too easy in the long run.

If ODST had Multiplayer (as in matchmaking) I would say hell no, way too overpowered, but for campaign...it seems like a good idea, because its an open world environment and would actually be helpful.

Was doing deja vu and i was shooting my smg in bursts into the ground up to the tunnel where you get the rockets and gooses and a grunt at the end of the section yells "they're firing".

As if they could hear a silenced smg that far away.

Btw - polls on bungie.net mean absolutely nothing, so please don't use them to try and prove some kind of point.

wait you mean to tell me that if I killed a grunt, or im supposing another enemy in a group, say the one in the back when their walking by, that the ones in the front wont notice he's dead? I didn't think the silencer had any effect on gameplay was just for looks.

  • 01.26.2010 7:27 PM PDT

Its funny how the silenced SMG, and the silenced pistol are the only modified weapons in the game lol.

And for some reason their must be some kind of magnet on ODST's that prevent them from using equipment(like a bubble shield)

and i guess every ODST has some kind off booboo on their left hand that makes them not want to duel wield a weapon but be man enough to hold a carbine, SMG, and sniper rifle lol.

That's like silencing a M107 Barett .50 cal.

Speaks for itself.

Bungie didn't say that it was going to help you be stealthy.

In Halo:Reach they said that you can, for the first time in a Halo game ever, you can truly be stealthy (aka headshot them 1 by 1 with a silenced weapon without alerting enemies)

I love the silenced SMG, I don't like the Automag as much though

My Construction contains the Instruction for my Self-Destruction through the World's Corruption

Yep, silencers were completely pointless. Somehow it made the SMG a little more powerful when in fact a silencer suppresses the velocity of a bullet and not just the sound.

On a sidenote, the Commercial where they show the ODST's drop and they all are waging a war with silenced SMG's is rediculously silly (Can you see our boys on D-Day in Normany storming the beach with Silenced Weapons? Hello?? They kinda already know you're there!!) and exemplifies the idiocy of having the silenced weapons in the game, especially during the flashback missions where supression of your actions is completely pointless. When it comes to Bungie, it's not about realism, it's about gameplay (when in reality, realism can add to the gameplay, as in not warning the enemy you're there!)

5th Mythic Conqueror of ODST.
If you would like to know more about Mythic difficulty please go to this thread. Thank you.

Please do not send me "recruitment messages" as I'm not interested in joining any groups currently.

Consider this; The Covenant are likely to use comm channels, possibly with biometric readouts available to the leader of each squad. If a squad member stops chatting, his bio signs flatline and falls over at the back of the group I'd say that it's pretty obvious he's dead and the rest of the squad will be alerted.

Just because it's not obvious in gameplay doesn't mean that the Covenant wouldn't be able to communicate in ways other than out loud. If the Spartans can have biometric scanners with their limited human tech then it's a sure bet that the Covies will have something similar and possible more advanced. If not I still stand by my thought that the sound of a corpse hitting the floor is quite literally a dead giveaway that you're udner attack.

As far as canon goes, the silencer should allow you to take out enemies without being detected and the nimmediately shot at, but for gameplay purposes it's necessary for the Covenant to notice otherwise it would be too easy and you lose the "one ODST against a city of hostiles" feeling.

Plus, if you want to be unnoticed, either choose another path, sneak around them or just give 'em a good old back-smack.

MW2! HaHa! Anyhow, silenced weapons are next to pointless in ODST; the suppresors were good only for nostalgic purposes.
