REACH. REACH. REACH.

public delta? did I hear that right?

  • 01.27.2010 6:40 PM PDT

I'm so glad you guys are able to start spilling your guts about some of this info now. This is a great week to hang around b.net.

I also like where you are headed with the DMR. The CE pistol was a great weapon but it just didn't make sense to me to have a pistol be so powerfull against armored enemies, especially at ranges beyond close combat. The DMR makes perfect sense I think to fill this role the way you've described it.

I anxiously await more info. :)

What an inane comment. Would you prefer that Bungie put a single weapon in the game with no other options? Different weapons should have different capabilites - an AR with an equal range to the DMR makes little sense to me. Also, why should the sniper rifle be the only exception? Are rifles,sub-machine guns, shotguns, handguns etc. not possessing of different attributes?

You preach against a perceived redundancy in the game (you allege Bungie has made the same game 3 times) yet you WANT the weapons to be equal, and thus redundant beyond their appearance? I can't follow your convoluted argument due to its complete and total lack of logic.

'"Balancing a game is not an exact science," Sage adds, "because we don't always want total equality.'

Total equality just sounds terrible doesn't it? Because if the AR and DMR were equal then the game would be fair. We don't want that do we? The person with the BR/DMR should obviously win regardless of skill. Congratulations on halo 2.2 Bungie. You've successfully made the same game 3 times now.

If you had any sense you would make all the guns have a similar kill range(with obvious exceptions to sniper rifles etc).

I don't know any other successful games that do that
oh wait

I find it odd that the Needler Rifle is 'more accurate' than the DMR. I feel like the DMR should be more accurate, especially if it's a BR/Sniper link and the NR is carbine-inspired.

Also, the DMR looks soooo good. They need to ship life-sized replicas of that thing with the Reach special edition.

screw how the DMR is called the Designited Marksman Rifle, its just a revamped Battle Rifle
heh heh heh, Needle Rifle, just a cool looking Needler Carbine, but yeah, having the needles track the enemy would be overpowered, like going from, "Holy s h i t, this is the BEST weapon in the game!!!", because you can snipe someone from halfways across the map with impossible-to-dodge explosive needles, to the more realistic, "Holy s h i t, this weapon rocks! Oh sweet! A rocket launcher!", when you see a better weapon.
I hope that they make a vehicle that is like a Vulture from Wars , but you can pilot it, it doesnt have any weps that the pilot controls, people can ride in it and man turrest from inside, and it holds a 'Hog or two, with drop pods. Basicily it would be like a pelican and an elephant (so it would be availible on one giant map, like Sandbox's sky bubble) combined, with the ability to fly over to a nutral flag, drop someone to it, then have a hornet or that "Warthod of the sky" falcon thing get them, and then dock with the main ship, but there would be shade like turrets that always aim up (like a missle pod on its rack), but you cant hit someone thats in the ground, and they fire AA rounds (the ship thing (im going to call it the Hive) could only be disabled, and when it hit the ground, it would be unable to fly for like 5 minutes, and it would kill everybody in it)
ill leave you with a parting gift, submit a character to my fanfic (through one of my saved threads), and messege me if you want the join the new MIA clan

The DMR looks and sound awesome, but, uh... "For the record, all of Reach's weapons are not one hit kills." you removed the spartan laser? That's my favorite weapon...

By the way, urk, this is defenatly (spell check fail) making up for the lack of any info for a while now (and I'm assuming this is continuing to the end of the week). Just make sure to steal a little for the Weekly Update (though regardless my "comments" I put for the last update are null and void now).

I can't wait to use the DMR and Needle Rifle. Those weapons sure look like they are going to be some of my personal favorites!

Now onto the podcast...

  • 01.27.2010 7:39 PM PDT

Looks good!

What about gameplay? Receiving the same kind of attention?

Wow, great info, (flipped) weapon renders, AND a podcast?! Superb.

Thank you! =)

The Assault Rifle looks really sweet, but I like the looks of the Needle Rifle better. I can't wait to try it!

  • 01.27.2010 7:55 PM PDT

So the new weapons are hybrids, I mean:
-The DMR is the result of the Sniper rifle and an assault rifle had sex.
-The same with the needler rifle, but was the carabine and the needler.

(Well, this is an easy way to say what happened; I think)

However, I'm so anxious to have those weapons between my hands and give headshots on Reach lands.

Your head is lost in bungie land brohtzart. I said besides the obvious such as snipers etc. Meaning snipers, rockets, shotguns, lasers, and the list goes on. THE OBVIOUS. Meaning i do NOT want all weapons equal but equally deadly. In Halo 2 you spawn equipped with a smg take two steps and the guy with the BR guns you down before you can make it to a good weapon. In Halo 3 you spawn with an AR take a few steps and get gunned down by the BR before you can grab one yourself. Same lame thing is going to happen in Halo Reach unless the AR has the ability to combat the power of the BR long range. Maybe make the spread of the AR very small until firing. Thus forcing a player to use some skill and common sense to kill someone long range via burst firing the AR. BALANCE EQUALITY FAIRNESS. Get it. I'm not saying thats what they should do thats just off the top of my head. COD all weapons are at least capable of being equally deadly at long range. In gears you spawn with four weapons allowing the player to be deadly at all the same ranges as opponents. Thats just two games off the top of my head which display this quality I want to see in Halo Reach.

I only play MLG and Team Snipers in Halo to eliminate the likely hood of unfair distribution of weapons. When one team controls the majority of good weapons the game can no longer be about skill. This can be avoided and should be avoided. I want to play a FPS not a race. Because essentially in team slayer thats what you do you race to the good weapon spawns.

This game is looking really neat.

  • 01.27.2010 8:29 PM PDT

Be not afraid of greatness; some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.

Please for the love of GOD bungie, don't make the DMR like the G3 from COD where faster presses of the trigger make it fire faster.

The last thing we need is people using turbo controllers which make the thing rapid fire.

Just make it like the BR with a cool down time in between shots. I really don't want to be in a game with someone who is just rapidly pressing the trigger and firing off a whole clip in a second.

"Seems to me you should spend less time on that article and more time working on that novel you've been working on!!!"

I am quite interested in trying out these new guns, especially the needle rifle. It just seems a little odd, and not too far outside the box. I guess you guys can't do something too out there, gotta stick within the confines of the Halo universe, i understand. But I just don't know man. Its like, the concept artists or whoever were sitting there thinking "well what kind of new guns can we make?" and then everyone shouted "A needler but its a rifle now!" I don't know you guys, I'm not bashin', and I look forward to the beta and will most likely purchase the game, but I'm just sayin'. Its like playing it safe with something pretty familiar to everyone, just slightly different so that this game will sound like a whole new experience. I don't know, I am indifferent at this point I guess.

All that aside, I am thoroughly enjoying the amount of shared intel flooding in on Reach this week, and I'm sure there are more awesome things to come in the following days...

  • 01.27.2010 8:34 PM PDT

I miss playing Halo with my friends.

Is the Needle Rifle single shot like the DMR?

  • 01.27.2010 8:35 PM PDT

Check out the group, Planet Reach and talk about Bungie's next game without the annoyance of the public forum. Oh and it's nice there too.

You thought you had lag, it took Jesus 3 days to re-spawn.

Way too long text

I think you're overstating the problem. It's hardly a problem I run into often. When I spawn, I can usually defend myself rather reasonably. Whether I get to a BR or not, I still have grenades and a bunch of other guns to defend myself with. Making a problem seem worse than it really is doesn't help your point at all.

1st, Guns should not be that close to eachother.2nd, They should have unique traits that seperate them from the others and can be used to solve a specific problem. I dont want to pistol a sniper across the map...

I believe that all of the H3 guns are balanced nearly perfectly. The only thing I would like to see is an AR with more damage that shoots slower. Im not sure if it would help but it would be nice to find a way around spraying around corners. I believe the AR is just a little too "medium-range" also. You could still make it spray but at least give it a little more kick. Or make it seem like it does. =p Anywho, the DMR looks awesome and the Needler Rifle looks like a pain in the -blam-. But it's still awesome. lol

Thank you Bungie! Seems you're finally realising that making the weapons feel (rumble) and sound awesome is more important than actual damage! Finally!

Halo CE, in all honesty, did this incredibly well, the AR was a worthless peice of -blam!- (except in emergencies and for clearing flood spores), but it felt awesome to fire, so it was still used.

Looks good so far.

At least you acknowledge it is a problem. I've played almost 9000(or 10000 or something) games of halo 2 and halo 3 combined so maybe I tend to notice it a little more. Just enough to notice it too much. I think everyone here agrees Halo CE was the most balanced of the Halo games because whether you had the AR, plasma pistol, pistol, needler, or whatever you still had a fair chance. I just don't understand why they can't remake that balance with a little innovation. An incredibly easy and non-innovative fix would be always start with the DMR as primary. Everyone vetoes until they get a game of BRs anyway.
