Rock Chalk Real Talk

@Geegs30

Is it just me or is it pretty obvious that Bungie wants everyone to forget the words "Battle Rifle?" In the section where they talked about the DMR they didn't mention the BR once which makes me think they're trying to eliminate it from our vocabulary.
I mean it's pretty obvious the DMR is the new BR. I also noted that they never said if it was single shot, burst, or fully auto.

My Best Bungie moment: finally beating all the Halo games on solo legendary.
My Worst Bungie moment: not seeing giant stuffie grunts in the Bungie store.

Loving the increase in Reach news, but still no new weapons that haven't already been announced? Sadface.

  • 01.27.2010 10:29 PM PDT

Luke is a sellout who once knew what was wrong with Halo. Now he blindly follows the developers in creating a casual atmosphere in whats supposed to be the most competitive FPS on a console.

Another win for capitalism another loss for humankind. Why stick to your values when you're gettin' paid, right?

P.S. No BR in Reach? weaksauce Juices does not approve.

Bungie has no Halo Honour.

I think you're overstating the problem. It's hardly a problem I run into often. When I spawn, I can usually defend myself rather reasonably. Whether I get to a BR or not, I still have grenades and a bunch of other guns to defend myself with. Making a problem seem worse than it really is doesn't help your point at all.

At least you acknowledge it is a problem. I've played almost 9000(or 10000 or something) games of halo 2 and halo 3 combined so maybe I tend to notice it a little more. Just enough to notice it too much. I think everyone here agrees Halo CE was the most balanced of the Halo games because whether you had the AR, plasma pistol, pistol, needler, or whatever you still had a fair chance. I just don't understand why they can't remake that balance with a little innovation. An incredibly easy and non-innovative fix would be always start with the DMR as primary. Everyone vetoes until they get a game of BRs anyway.

This is exactly what I've been wanting to see. New weapons are my favorite, alongside new characters. Nice work Bungie.

There are many powers in the world, for good or for evil. Some are greater than I am. Against some I have not yet been measured. But my time is coming.

Mythic On

Why is it only now that bungie has decided audio is important in Halo? They didn't seem to mind most guns in Halo 3 sounding like paintball guns shooting blanks. But i am glad they've come to their senses. :D

Exalted is considered "the highest" because you can't get any bans or warnings of any kind for quite a long time, which is harder than just being a member for a long time.

Awesome sauce... but when are we going to get some more meaty details?

For instance, in H3 we were told about the number of sounds associated with the BR. That type of stuff makes me smile!

I am human, I am good and bad as well. But I try my hardest to stay good. And some of the things I do and say may be bad. Or just not too good, but I do try.

So with that said I don't fault you. I mean your only human, good or bad.

Weapon balance is why I always liked the Halo sandbox. Every weapon is balanced so that you don't end up with the god like powers, and each weapon has their pros and cons.

This is why I hate the Modern Warfare 2 sandbox. They just give you a bunch of guns, you chose what you want, and then you run around shoot each other in 3-4 hit kills. Then after you get a bunch of cheap kills, you can call in UAVs, helicopters, and harriers. Then you can totally own the map for like 2 minutes. If someone on your team gets a harrier and you have a helicopter, the two of you can totally own the map for the entire game. To me, this is unbalanced and unfair.

But in the Halo multiplayer sandbox, each and every weapon gives you an advantage, but something is taken away in exchange. So then the game becomes more about skill and some luck, rather than a bunch of cheap kills, who saw who first, and what gun each player is carrying and then not being able to own the map for large portions of the games with your harriers.

It also helps that Halo has what's called matchmaking. Unlike MW2 where you get thrown into a random party and ranks are not a factor of who you play against. Then you end up with a team of higher ranking players vs a team of lower ranks making the match one sided and unfun. Halo always matches you up with people of a similar rank, thus giving you a more fun and balanced experience.

If you love being spawn killed, campers, 4-hit kills, stacked teams, players being able to have god like powers for large portions of the match, and crappy gun sandbox then MW2 is for you. Halo takes a more balanced approach and requires more skill.

I couldn't agree with you more that halo takes more skill. This is why I enjoy halo so much. I love knowing that I can out BR people because I'm better than them. Where as in COD its whoever sees who first wins, making the game heaven for campers. Weapon balance however is much better in COD for example: You stay alive long enough to run out of ammo with your primary then you switch to your not as versatile secondary weapon(say a pistol) if skilled you can still pursue and out-gun players across map.

This scenario doesn't happen in halo. A halo situation would be: You run out of ammo with the BR you're stuck with an AR forcing you with two options A. and B.; A. entails hiding like a little girl until you can assassinate someone or get the jump on them; B. calls for taking a giant risk and actually pursuing the enemy usually resulting in you getting four shotted by a BR.

I would rather just run out of ammo and know that because I'm skilled I'll be able to use my secondary weapon(say an AR) to seek out and kill someone whether they have the advantage or not instead of hiding around a corner and waiting.

I'm not saying Halo should be a run and gun kind of game. I enjoy the necessary team work and equally matched teams, but I don't enjoy team slayer where whoever has the BR wins. I thought bungie said halo was a long to medium range combat game. Why so many short range weapons then? I guess thats why there is MLG

Agreed. That is why Halo CE was the most balanced out of all the Halo games. You could effectively fight with any weapon without fear of being totally out classed by another. The pistol was beast but it did not dominate like the BR does now not to mention it had very few spawn points compared to halo 3's 8-10 per map. The gameplay mechanics were so much more fair then they are now in Halo 2 and 3. I hope reach gets some of that Halo CE balance.

Well, chronologically speaking the BR in the form we know doesn't exist until later, doesn't it?

If anything I think the DMR is the prototype to the BR which comes along years later in the storyline. If weapons are coming "back" into the past, I think what we'd be seeing would be their predecessors.

Hey guys I just want to say is please don't make the same mistake again:

Creating one weapon that can dominate every scenario (BR, and maybe DMR), and please don't make the Human weapons so over bearing. I mean, the Covenant is the superior force in every way, then why do their weapons suck so much compared to the Human ones?

in the name of good fun challenging and fair gaming...amen

Thank you. I also want to add:

Why can't every weapon do more damage on a headshot? I mean, against shields, it should do the same amount of damage, but without shields, every weapon should be able to kill faster.

Although maybe not the plasma ones, which should have plasma stun, which would make you run slower by 5%, and make you heavier by 5% for 2 seconds after each headshot.
