Who is the Grunt Warchief ?

The Warchief started his military career just like any other Grunt has in the Covenant, he was taken from his family when he was very young without having a choice in the matter. Even though most Grunts resent this the Warchief didn't since he was surrounded by other Grunts at Nipple Academy and he readily accepted his classmates as extended members of his family. He quickly became one of the top students at the academy and because of this when he finally was sent into service he entered with the high rank of Ultra. He could have joined the Special Operations Divisions and was urged to but he declined because he didn't want to work with small groups he want to work with his whole "family."

On the field he became very popular with both the Grunts under his command and his Brute superiors because he never questioned orders and he translated them to his fellow Grunts in such a way that did not put them into heavy danger. Brute orders for Grunts are not very detailed and usually just involve the Grunts walking into enemy fire to distract the enemy forces. This high Grunt survivability rate and mission success gained the Brute War Chieftain he served under various accolades that were never shared with the soldiers under his command. After some time without any acknowledgment for a simple Grunt who tried to do the best by everyone the future Warchief began to change his view of what the Covenant Military and the Covenant itself was providing to it's members. Specially what did it really provide to the Grunts.

This slow burning distaste for the Covenant finally erupted during an engagement when human forces ambushed them and the Brute War Chieftain suddenly left his command because one of the human cyborgs killed "His lover." Every Brute, of course, followed their pack leader and that left the Grunts to deal with the brunt of the attack all by the themselves. The Jackals never really help much in situations like this so it was really up to the Grunts, like always.

This was the exact moment when the Grunt Warchief was truly born. He picked up the Brute War Chieftain's helmet that he dropped in a hurry to get to his lover, donned it to show his troops where he was at all times, to show that he would never abandon them, and lead his Grunt brothers to victory. They routed the enemy and ended up with minimum casualties, except for the Brutes and Jackals that all died, but they don't count. .

After this event the story of the Grunt Warchief becomes a bit muddled. The Warchief actually made a report of what happened and sent it in but he, along with all the Grunts that survived, never reported back to their base. After that event the newly crowned Grunt Warchief becomes sort of a myth in the Covenant Army. Stories among the Grunts began to be told that whenever Grunt forces are overwhelmed and abandoned by their leaders the Grunt Warchief appears and saves the day, except for the Jackals and Brutes because they don't count.

There are even tales that the Warchief was, in fact, the first to learn the truth about the Sacred Rings and that he was the one that formed the "Heretics." He was the first trying to spread the truth that was being hidden but since the Grunts have a very low standing in the Covenant he decided that the purpose would be better served if an Elite became the face of the movement. Specially since with the Elites everything is about honor and the warrior's code which he thought wasted too much time when it came down to making up their minds. He would rather be out in the field saving his brothers and spreading the word. This proved to be a bit of a misstep for the movement when they lost some extremely valuable assets because one of the Elite faces worried about his warrior's honor first and the movement second. Down the line this loss became a great gain as the one sent to destroy them instead joined them and went to became a symbol that could not be buried with lies and deceit.
