ODST has a much 'looser' storyline. What I mean is that the game seemed more structured around making a varied and enjoyable campaign, rather than driving an intricate plot. Because of this flexibility designers were able to make each of ODST's campaign levels fulfill a different role - we have a banshee mission, sniper mission, night, day, close quarters, vehicle and escort missions. This coupled with Firefight makes the single player experience more re-playable (in my opinion).
Having said that Halo 3 has a lot more set pieces, is generally more epic and has a great multiplayer. I guess it depends whether or not my 360 is connected to XBL!
