I was playing AotCR yesterday before the Super Bowl and I had a first happen, never saw this happen before, but I think I may have a reason as to why it happened.
I routinely do things to change how the Covies attack, throw off the AI when I play. At the point in the level just past the "Rolling Thunder" animation where you come upon the sleeping Grunt with the tunnel heading out to ground level just past him (where the Covie drop ship unloads reinforcements and 2 Ghosts) I typically will grab a Ghost and make a run up past the Jackals and into the tower area. I make a circuit around the tower to activate all of the spawns including the Banshee and then head back down to the spot I picked up the Ghost. It is fun to see how many of the enemy you can take out with the Sniper Rifle as they work their way down to you (the enemy AI has a great pursue the chief aspect to it). I did this lil trick during the gameplay, killed everything eventually (wish that SR held more rounds during this part of the game)and worked my way to take out the rest of the level up to the second set of Hunters down the sprial path. I was about to engage them when I realized that I did not take out the Shade gunner and the elites in the tower. Being a determined Covie Killer, I decided to take care of that before I moved any further into the level (also wanted the checkpoint I had yet to get). Went back, killed the Shade Grunt and the 2 elites hanging out on the balcony then went in for the kill on the 2 invisible Elites.
This is where things got funky, I killed the first one with the Pistol, backed up to re-load and while I did the other one beelined it out of the tower. I was like, WTF? I have never seen the invisible Elites leave the tower when not in pursuit of my tin butt, and I was still in the hallway, not even close to outside. I walked forward to see if he was in the other hallway and heard what I thought was the exit doors opening, but when I got to the corner, they were closed. I backed up, not wanting to catch a blue sword in the head and exited the way I came. I went around the tower with my SR scope switching between 2 and 10 power to see where he went and send him off the Elite Hell with a round to the head (a tough shot, I usually blow the first try and just spin one around). As I made my way forward I could not locate him to save my skin. Finally I realized that a Ghost was not on the ground but was actually being piloted by my missing Elite! It was amusing because I could not see his outline in any way, nor his sword (from either side, I walked back around to get a view from the other side and it was not visible there either). I snuck up on the Ghost, and since he was just sitting there plopped a Plasma Grenade into its cowling and just laughed as it went up. Yeah, that was a mistake because for some reason it did not kill the elite like it normally would, it just really pissed him off! I panicked and starting unloading with my sniper rifle, missed 4 times, switched to my Pistol and unloaded a whole clip into the Ghost. Fortunately that did the trick as the Ghost went up into flames and I heard that satisfying Elite death wail. I could not tell if the normal sword poof accompanied the death as I was a bit distracted by my near death.
I thought about it later and decided that since I had killed everything so out of order by bringing most of them down to the bottom of the tunnel and then gone past the tower to take out all the covies at the top of the spiral path that the AI figured the Invisible Elites did not have to act normally and released them from their normal restrictions on movement. Why pass up the chance to pilot that cool Ghost when you normally never get to even see outside the tower!
