Hi guys.

I've noticed that with Halo PC you don't get the predator style shimmer on you're gun when you pick up the camo. This is also true for elites who have camo - they are just kinda invisible. Is this only on the xbox version or is it my graphics card?

AMD Athlon 2.8ghz
1.gb
Nvidia 6600 GT OC

are you able to see slight hint of color when invisible? if you are, you might be running halo on fixed function rendering.

Dude, I've had the same problem since I've played the game with my 6800GT. I have narrowed it down to one thing, NVIDIA drivers or a compatability problem with the GeForce 6 series of cards. I have the latest video drivers (77.72), DirectX 9.0c, the latest Halo patch, the latesty EVERYTHING (I check for new drivers for all my system's components all the time) and I still cannot get the liquidy look, either.

I even run the game with the -force20 or whatever it is command line and still now Predator-like effects, just an "invisible" figure.

It kinda pisses me off. Have you noticed that you don't get coronas on the Ghost, either? You know, the lights on the console of the Ghost? It's just nothing.

Sucks man, it sucks big time.

If you are talking about the 3 or 4 lights at the bottom of the ghost, i'm only getting those in campaign. the command line is -use20. hell, even -use11 should give you the liquidy look.

Yeah, I don't get them in campaign either.

Meh, time to quit -blam!-in'! Surely NVIDIA or Bungie sees this problem, but somehow refuses or is too lazy to fix it?

Yeah my Camo looks like some weird white color, but it doesn't matter, because everyone dies in invisible games.

  • 07.26.2005 12:33 AM PDT

nVidia cards have issues with the active camo effect. It only works with Radeons.

first of all i just want to say its great to be back after losing my internet service for 2 weeks. now back to the topic, nvidia drivers and the lower radeon drivers for some reason have a hard time drawing the liquid effect from the active camo but i look at the bright side, it makes the game that much more difficult and in my opinion fun.why? it makes the game more fun cause you cant see the person at all you have to look real careful to see their outline and that is a challenge a sniper loves a lot and on the ghost lights it only works on capaign not on multiplayer its not a glitch its the way it was designed cause i used to have the crumiest card and i still saw the lights in campaign.

You need a DirectX 9 Radeon card (I believe that's 9600 onwards), and you also need to turn anisotropic filtering on.

let's get something straight. please describe this "shimmer effect". is it the light refraction (fisheye like, image buldging or rounded), or is it something else? I get the light refraction effect. here's my video card:

ATi X300 SE
i think it's a DirectX 9
PCI-Express
Overclocked to 457/228 (core mhz./memory mhz.)

Its the shimmer/light refraction effect that covers your hand and gun when you pick up the active camo. It can also be seen when elites use their camo. I used the term predator effects in the thread title as you can see a similar effect in the Predator movie when the predator uses its camo, probably where Bungie got the idea. A similar effect can also be seen when snake uses his camo suit in the Metal Gear Solid games. However, as i am used to seeing this effect on the Xbox version of halo, it stuck out a mile to me when the gun just grew faint after picking up the camo - more like when you pick up invisibility in the original Doom. I've also noticed that the shields that the Jackals use don't look as good and im sure that this is related to the camo shimmer effect, or lack of of in my case.

Have you seen the film Alien vs. Predator Mr MA5B, its where the Predator turns invisible with awesome gadgets, that kind of invisible, there is no colour, you can see their faint outline, if you get me, it's a bit like looking through non-level / unsee - able glass, if you get me?

I played halo first on Xbox, then on PC, I noticed a few graphical differences, such as, No light distortion with active camo, and the Jackal’s arm shields did not change colors when shot with energy weapons.

Now, I have a Geforce 6800 and am disappointed about the bland active camo effect on the PC

Here is what realllly grates on me, If you look in the screenshots for the PC version of HALO at gamespot you will see this image:

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/halo/screens.html?page=40

Now, why on earth is it that we don't have that effect? If you know of a way to obtain the proper light distorting effect for active camo, let me know.
