When you look down deep enough, ODST actually saves you money no matter how you look at it. I know, it's $60, but bear with me.

So at launch Halo 3 had three editions, Standard, Limited, and Legendary. Forsimiplicity I am only going to use the Standard Editions pirce, the other two will be added later. I am tired at the moment and don't feel like doing it all. Sorry.

Halo 3 Standard-$60

Now depending on weather you purchased Xbox Live or not great adds up, after all you needed Live to buy extra content.

Xbox Live

Three 1-month accounts on the Xbox-Free
1-month-$8
3-month-$20
12 month-$50

Now add that to your purchase

Halo 3 Standard

Halo 3 Standard + Three 1-months=$60
Halo 3 Standard + 1-month=$68
Halo 3 Standard + 3-month=$80
Halo 3 Standard + 12-month=$110

Starting to add up huh? Now we add the individual map packs.

Heroic
-$10
-Free (After an allotted amount of time)

Legendary
-$10
-$7 (After an allotted amount of time)

Cold Storage
-Free

Mythic I
-$10

Mythic II
-$10

We are not going to include Mythic II as of right now, but now we add up all the purchases.

Halo 3 Standard

Halo 3 Standard + Three 1-months=$60
-Heroic Paid=$70
-Heroic Free=$60
-Legendary Paid=$70
-Legendary Discounted=$67
-Cold Storage=$60

Halo 3 Standard + 12-month=$110

-Cold Storage=$110
-Mythic I=$120

Total
-$140 (Non free and discounted)
-$127 (Bought Heroic Free and Legendary discounted)

Okay, now discounting Halo Wars, which gave the Mythic maps free, lets introduce ODST. Don't worry, I will revise and add Halo Wars if you want me to add it later on.

Halo 3: ODST=$60

First let us evaluate the price tag. If Microsoft, the publisher and sole authority in regards to all Halo content pricing, were generous, then ODST as the Campaign Disc would be $40. Add the Mythic II maps and the price increases to $50. That would mean the Mythic Disc would only be a $10 add-on. Remember, the Mythic Disc includes the Halo 3 multiplayer component AND every map in the game.

But wait. Knowing Microsoft's pricing scenarios with games lacking Matchmaking and other content, i.e BioShock, Sonic the Hedgehog 06, and Bulletwitch, all of which originally priced at $60 themselves, ODST would have been $60 regardless of the Mythic Disc. Indeed, the $60 price tag was announced when ODST only had the Campaign and Mythic II maps along for the ride, way before the Mythic Disc, Reach Beta and Firefight came along.

So despite what others believe ODST to be worth to them, it is a $60 game. How does it save money? Let us look at the scenarios.

If you lack Xbox Live, but own Halo 3
-Halo 3: ODST is $60, so the combined cost would be around $120. It may seem like much, but if you look at the maps already released and compare what you have then you will see money saved.

If you only bought the Heroic Map Pack before it was free...

Halo 3: ODST=$60
- Heroic Map Pack=$10
---------------------
$50 (You save that much compared to additionally buying full priced Legendary and Mythic. Buying Heroic for free doesn't look to save you much except $40. Lets keep going.)

Halo: ODST=$60
- Heroic Free
- Legendary=$10
---------------------
$40 (If you did not buy Legendary discounted and Heroic Paid. Moving on. We will now include Legendary Discounted and not Cold Storage because it is free.)

Halo: ODST=$60
- Heroic Free
- Legendary Discounted=$7
- Mythic I=$10
---------------------
$43 (You save that much if you didn't buy Heroic Paid and bought Legendary discounted. Finally, with the release of Mythic II, let us see how much we save shall we?)

Halo: ODST=$60
- Heroic Free
- Legendary Discounted=$7
- Mythic I=$10
- Mythic II-$10
---------------------
$33 (With all every map purchased except Heroic Free, you save $33.)

Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST Price Saves By DLC

$120
-$50
-----
$70

$120
-$40
-----
$80

$120
-$43
-----
$77

$120
-$33
-----
$87

So those without Live save all of that money, but XboxLive users still save too.

Live Users Total Investment In Halo 3 Compared to $120

Total Investment In Halo 3
Three 1-months=$60-$50=$10
1-month=$68-$50=$18
3-month=$80-$50=$30
12-month=$110-$50=$60

Total Investment In Halo 3
Three 1-months=$60-$40=20
1-month=$68-$40=$28
3-month=$80-$40=$40
12-month=$110-$40=$70

Total Investment In Halo 3
Three 1-months=$60-$43=$17
1-month=$68-$43=$25
3-month=$80-$43=$37
12-month=$110-$43=$67

Total Investment In Halo 3
Three 1-months=$60-$33=$27
1-month=$68-$33=$35
3-month=$80-$33=$47
12-month=$110-$33=$77

Conclusion

If you made it this far and managed to make sense of my equations, I hope you can understand where I am coming from. Any other mathematicians around here can weigh in if they want, but I am extremely tired because of my overall day. When you look right down to it, you saved money depending on your ODST purchase by either getting every piece of DLC without Live and by showing how much less of an investment in Halo 3 you make by which maps you do and do not have.

Hope it makes sense.

Very well put. The only difference if you bought the extended editions of both, you're saving with ODST(extra controller). Legendary though you actually are losing $7 with all DLC purchases. Otherwise, it is a deal. Thanks for putting the math out there.

I don't think anyone can argue against the fact that ODST and the Mythic Disc was a great deal if you didn't have the map packs before. You got a single player campaign, firefight and all the multiplayer maps to H3 on one disc.

It's less of a deal though if you if you bought the maps as they were released. Rather than all those maps you're just getting three and some convience. Those three maps are free though. And you still have Campaign and Firefight.

But it still is a deal... Even as I pointed out earlier, if you bought Legendary Halo 3 and regular ODST, you lost $7-$20, depending on what price you paid for all of the DLC. If you bought special edition ODST, you always saved.

this man speaks the thruth. FYI I bought halo 3 and all its map packs, halo wars and bought and loved Odst. You people must be seriously useless in the real world if you cant afford a 60$ game and/or feel like you got cheated with odst. Theres numerous other 60$ games that offer way less unpolished content then odst.

Spartans are from Venus and Elites are from Uranus

Lets be realistic, ODST only saved money for those who didn't buy the dlc for Halo 3 and the people who didn't buy the dlc for Halo 3 before ODST probably were never intending to buy them. And then maybe the very small amount of people who either didn't have Halo 3 yet or just bought an xbox might have saved money.

The dedicated Halo fans who bought all the map packs prior to ODST's release didn't save a dime. The Reach beta isn't content thats going to be sold and with the Mythic disc Halo 3 players are essentially paying for a chunk of content they already have again. You could argue that they save money since they get Mythic part 2 for free but if they previously payed ten dollars on just one map pack, that "saved" money is now gone and theres absolutely no money saved if said person payed more than ten dollars on Halo 3 DLC.

ODST has no dollar value without the mythic disc since it can't be bought without it. So there is no calculating how much it's saving or not to any customer who already had Halo 3's content.

xbox live is in no way a part of the equation. ODST nor Halo 3 save you any money on Live and a gold membership is not required in order to play either game or even download the content.

Theres also the fact that, what if a person didn't buy Halo 3 at launch? The game has gone through many price cuts and now sits at 29.99. Roughly thirty dollars. If a person were to purchase Halo 3 now they could do that and download all the maps and they'd be spending sixty dollars or less on all that content. YOu could argue that at this point a person wouldnt be saving any money by purchasing ODST.
