halo only uses the cd drive to check that you have an authentic copy of halo, and to install halo. all of the rest is from the hard drive. Lag isn't just caused by slow speed. You could be joining a server in austrailia and not know it. distance causes lag, the server's speed causes lag, and other programs eating up you system resources causes lag. Slow cpu's can cause lag in campaign as well as multiplayer.

Just because you have cable, it's not a sure thing it isn't your connection. In some of the other posts you'll find links to sites that test your upstream and downstream connection speed. Both are important. I did not switch to cable from dsl because the upstream speed was much slower than my dsl upstream speed. Also, cable gets slower when more users in your area are online at the same time– it's like a party line. Do you get a better connection when it's "off peak" time?

how right you are. cable companies are relying on the fact that very few people will pay for cable to have enough super-fast bandwidth for everyone, so they make it like a shared connection. DSL is more of a dedicated line, you will get the speed even if every DSL user is online.

The main thing to blame for online lag in halo is the bad netcode they made. Unless you are a very good hacker, you can't do anything about that. Just learn to cope with the lag; you might even become unstoppable when you play a lag free game from the practice.

a good site to test your connection, as well as your whole pc, is PCPitstop I use it a lot, and has been recommended by PCWorld magazine.

Are you kidding me cable is way better then dsl. Whats your ping with dsl 150. well with cable i get ping around 60-80 and never changes. plus with cable you can downlod anything even if the file is like 700mb it only takes me about 5 minutes.

Off peak would be when most of your cable using neighbors are asleep or otherwise not online.

Idk my ping on hl2dm and cs:s is around 60-80 and maybe 100 on a bad day, but on halo its always between 100-150 then i get some lag spikes and it jumps to 200-250! All this with a cable conncetion...
