I was reading the tutorials on a modding site and what I came away with was that I needed a copy of 3ds max. So I went to the discreet site and went to buy the software. That was until I saw the price. $3500 dollars. Where do ya'll get that kind of money to spend on software. I know it isn't a problem for game studios because they figure that cost into their overhead. Is everyone who mods paying this money or am I missing something. Please help.

i think some people try to find an older version that's free, do the trial version of the newest software, or get a warez version.

Yeah I've been googling all day. and yahooing. exciting. lycosing. msn ... You get the picture.

I finally found a solution. I appreciate the help.

They should have a license aimed at the personal user. Like Borland has for their compilers. As long as you don't create a program for sale you can use the cheaper version. If you want to sell it you have to step up into the expensive options. If discreet did that they could make some extra money. People would learn to use their software more because it was cheaper and it would become the industry standard and put maya out of business. They wouldn't lose the revenue from the more expensive licenses because the big studios that can afford this thing would buy the more expensive version because they are creating a product that will make millions. I'll stop with my rant on marketing and economics now.

You can use gmax, with the appropriate plugin.

Yeah, the ninja's right, Gmax is free and it's from the same company that makes 3DS Max. There's a script called Chimp 1.6 that lets you use Gmax in order to export the files Halo needs. You could also download a 30-day trial of 3ds max if anything else and just keep re-installing the trial everytime it runs out if all else fails. As for me, I'm using blender to make my first map and doing it just like you would in 3ds max because I know how to use it better. Then I'm going to export it and import to 3ds to make the proper file. It's not the smartest way to go, but I can make better models in Blender at this point.

Or you can get Blender. It's free, open source and has a really good community. Plus it exports to 3ds and there are scripts to export to lots of other formats.

Check to make sure you are in the right directory and the file hasn't been deleted or had the name changed.

I have a copy of 3ds up and running. I am working on the tutorials to learn the different features. Can someone outline how making different mods work?
