I have not seen a single thing about this yet, but I'm not entirely sure if its directly linked with Halo.
If you look at the counter-timers, the first stage was the Microsoft conference "Meltdown" which Microsoft stressed that they were going to use Windows to breathe life into the PC Gaming community providing tools to link Windows and XBox such as Livetools for PC.
Quote from the gamespot article: "(blah blah blah, XBox and PC are separate markets) ...but that the company is open to exploring ways for the units to work together. One scenario discussed today was a PC RTS in which the player issues missions to Xbox gamers who are playing a mission-based FPS or flight sim."
Is it at all possible that the counter has more to do with Longhorn than Halo 2? Who knows, maybe Microsoft would press-release planning XBox API implanted into Longhorn, which would make sense -- after you sold all those XBoxes, sell huge crates of Longhorn disks, after those sales are done, launch XBox 2.
This is just major rambling and I don't believe that this is where things are headed... but honestly, if a MS conference "happens" to be on the same day as it... its really suspicious.
Keep a lookout on August 10th/11th for these three things: Microsoft, PC Gaming, and major press events/conventions.
Another thing is that August 24th seems to be
1) Around the date of the projected Halflife2 and Doom III releases
2) Near the date XP SP2 is supposed to be released.
