Yes, I felt like an ODST.
I was slower, with less capabilities, a different weapon set, and the HUD was orange, not blue. Not to mention everything seems taller, and I felt weaker. Overall, the decreased speed, VISR, the different hands (yes, I pay attention to my character's hands), player shadow, battle calls, (seemingly) shorter, visibly weaker, newer health system, more realistic movement, and the orange HUD all flowed together perfectly for me to make me feel like the UNSC's second-best; the closest you could get to a Spartan without being a Spartan. Because in all honesty, ODSTs are the second-best. Right behind Spartans (though still light years behind). In the novels, the Spartans have so much on the ODSTs in speed, agility, tactics, etc. But in the games, you can't do much to move your arms or legs, etc, anyways, so that doesn't really factor in. And all the Spartans have on ODSTs armor-wise is the energy shield. Once that's depleted, plasma burns right through the armor (read The Fall of Reach). And they added stamina because, well, the game has to be fun. It'd be a boring game if you died after three shots and couldn't recharge anything. As for tactics, when you step into the character's shoes their tactics are yours, so those obviously won't really vary.
The gameplay is not meant to be drastically different, as the only difference Bungie can express in an FPS is the increased speed, and the shield. The agility, the tactics, etc, and everything that REALLY sets Spartans apart, Bungie can't express into the game. That's why you feel like a Spartan still; most of the changes aren't used in the game, and so aren't present.
