Don't drink to excess– You might shoot at tax-collectors... and miss

Computer: Power Mac G5 CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (2.2) Number Of CPUs: 2 CPU Speed: 1.8 GHz L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB Memory: 1.25 GB Bus Speed: 900 MHz

ATi Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition
Display Type: LCD Resolution: 1680 x 1050 Depth: 32-bit Color

As I understand it, you buy a computer, hook it up to a high speed internet connection that you provide and you configure it to run as a dedicated server. It's not like a subscription that you get through Bungie or GameSpy.

A dedicated server is a computer/server that is on-line permantly dedicated to providing that game.

You CAN get a internet connection and a spare PC and hook it up, but unless your upload speed is good it won't be a good server.

The easiest way to get one is to go to a gameserver company. You'll notice a lot of servers on Halo have their names in front of the servers (such as X3m at http://www.x3mservers.net) You pay a monthy/quarterly payment for the server you choose. The number of players you can carry, private, public, teamspeak, etc... all choose what you pay.

why would you want to do a silly thing like that? It sorta defeats the purpose of having a DS doesn't it?

Dedicated serversthat u can buy that are strictly for dedicating cost about $8000, they r about $2-4000 if u just take one of your own spare pc's. I am not sure if this is still true price but i know servers 7-8 yars ago were like $40000. I dont know if any one u know has that much to through away. The price may have come down though for the newer ones.

Well, it should still be in the "The Guides" Sticky. If not, he has another rather nice one here on Halomaps.co.uk . I don't know if that one describes how to change ports though.

Once again, as Mr. B said, running a DS and playing halo on the same machine defeats the point. A DS is just to free up bandwith/CPU time.

P.S. MaDmAn, making a post in ALL CAPS and having it's contents in ALL CAPS does not endear you to the majority of the regulars here. Try not to do that. Thanks. ;)

No, no no. It can be free, if you give up one of your computers to run the DS, and if you give up a separate, rather fast connection to it. But if you don't want to do any of that, yes, you have to pay for one.

Bottom line: If you want a dedicated server(so you don't have zero ping) with good performance(which is not going to happen on your home network) you need to rent a server. I just rented one tonight for $2/slot. My clan has just started so I got the minimum # of slots 10. It comes with a clan webpage and free teamspeak server for 10 players. So they deal with your zero ping or cough up some dough and you guys get a server.

BTW if anybody is in a clan with a rented ded server can you let me know how the clan leaders go about collecting funds for the server. I don't want to make it a requirement for membership that they have to contribute, but I'm not sure how to handle it, and I ain't paying for it myself.
