With that out of the way, as someone said earlier: Don't kill the messenger. It's pointless to blame marketing decisions at the developer, because marketing decisions are in the hands of the publisher and whoever holds the rights to the franchise. Both of those are Microsoft. Microsoft put on the package, "Exclusive access to the Halo: Reach Beta".

That still doesn't excuse Bungie for not making the product worth the $60 price, which I believe they were perfectly capable of, which is why I partially blame them for this mess.
Really? That doesn't explain it?

Ignoring my rebuttal doesn't prove you're right, it just creates a vibe that you can't refute my rebuttal.
I didn't ignore it. I referred back to my post which seemed overlooked in your response.

To clarify: You stated: "That still doesn't excuse Bungie for not making the product worth the $60 price, which I believe they were perfectly capable of, which is why I partially blame them for this mess."

I replied with: "Don't kill the messenger. you know why they call it the xbox 360 cus when you see it you turn 360 degrees and walk away enjoy your crappy games kid

Although them giving us our maps and Beta codes without needing to buy ODST, I do see your point and agree. But it's all business.

can anyone explain because i got the message over xbox(the email?) saying i got three free months and 400 microsoft points is the beta key included in that package?

  • 03.07.2010 4:54 PM PDT

Major C.B.

All I have to say to the Bungie defenders here is that you're not in the company. You have no idea how they operate, etc. And remember they've gotta make a profit too. Unless you have conclusive proof, don't use the fact that Microsoft owns Halo as an excuse. Bungie will make profitable decisions, too. In other words, unless you hear otherwise, you can't say "Microsoft's fault, not Bungie's." This is what I say to everyone regarding ODST.

ALL OF YOU ARE IGNORANT.

Bungie DID NOT LIE.

They were told by MS that ODST would be the way to get the Beta. Bungie told everyone that. Then, M$ and their marketing crap decided to give people who played Halo 2 in the last few months a code to the Beta.

HOW THE -blam!- IS BUNGIE AT FAULT? They did NOT know. M$ does whatever they want, because they can. AND they own the rights to Halo.

Happened with the map packs. Happened with other stuff too. Bungie can't do ANYTHING with Halo except release and maintain their games.

Well said, Dskull.

Contrary to popular belief I do NOT live under a bridge.

The story was fun the first time but there is really no reason to play story again and firefight was sweet but not sweet enough. Then again it did come with the mythic disk and Reach beta.

While Halo 3: ODST was being advertised Bungie had stated that the only way to get the Mythic Map Pack Part 2 and the Halo Reach Beta was through Halo 3: ODST.

5 months later, Bungie releases the Mythic Map Pack Part 2 on the marketplace and now it seems as though Microsoft is randomly releasing Halo Reach Beta codes through E-Mails.

It seems to me that Bungie has downright lied to all of us into buying their overpriced game.

Does anybody else feel as betrayed as I do?

After five pages someone has probably already said it but I just need to make sure.

Bungie never promised that Mythic II would never come to XBL Marketplace. They don't even have the final say in content to go up there. There was no word at all until Shishka made a passing comment how MS had 'no plans at this time' in a related thread.

Bungie didn't promise anything. Microsoft didn't promise anything either.

And I don't remember my shrink wrap on ODST saying: The only way into the Reach Beta.

And last I heard those early Reach Beta codes were for people that signed up to XBL for H2 in the first of days or some gobbledy -blam!-.

I'm sorry, but I never saw an instance of Bungie actually saying that the ONLY way into the BETA test was to obtain ODST. I have consistently seen BWUs that say "You can get an invite into the Halo: Reach BETA by buying a copy of ODST." Or some variant of that.

Now to the OP's question. I respond...

Who the -blam!- cares??!!?! Remember when in September that ODST was the only route in? NO ONE knew that LIVE service was being cut off (although that some may already know that they were considering it). Therefore, no one would have thought playing Halo 2 was going to be a way in. But even then, why would they if they didn't?

And no, Bungie did not lie to us.

Now. Even IF there was an indication that there would be no other way in, remember the video game industry is a business and marketing is involved. In most companies, this kind of stuff is ALWAYS *subject to change*.

»mîçhâêl«

come on now, they never lied to us, and ive been researching this people that have played halo 2 in the last six months have gotten the invite. This is an XBOX PROMOTIONAL INVITATION and isn't affiliated with Bungie studios. They literally couldn't lie to you. IMHO i say this is microsofts way of giving something to the halo 2 players as some of them have yet to migrate to the xbox 360, it's just a way of saying we don't want to support you guys but here take this forgive and forget. Think of it as the government putting a highway through a native reserve, the reserve is given a HUGE lumpsum of money even though i wouldn't say they deserve it, the times should be moved forward and they should live with us in our society. It's like saying hey halo 2 player why don't you jump on board with the times, it's been five years. there's also a chance that some people will buy an xbox 360 and it costs nothing on MS behalf but it might boost they're sales by a small fraction but hey the ps3 is catching up and every bit helps.

Lie is perhaps a little harsh ;)

Lets look at Bungies own FAQ on this subject, http://www.bungie.net/projects/reach/article.aspx?ucc=faq.
Now there is a LOT of information, as a FAQ should be an exact and complete source. So lets look up the "How do I get access to the Halo: Reach Beta" - they do say its included on your ODST disk, and that you need to hold onto that disk.

But do they mention other ways of accessing beta?
Should they be aware of other ways (current or planned)?
Should they be aware of the perceptions of gamers?
Is this Microsofts web site?

Did they Lie - or just withhold the truth ... hard call.

Nope, not at all. Listen, one thing you have to know is that after Bungie delivered ODST to Microsoft, it was out of their hands. Microsoft was the only entity in charge of marketing and selling the game. The only thing that Bungie did was make the game and hand it to Microsoft. The same goes for the mappacks and the Beta codes. Also know that Microsoft didn't have to do squat about closing down the original xbox servers. They're making room for Reach's Beta and MM servers. If they gave codes and points away to "random" H2 players, I think that was pretty decent of them considering they didn't have to do anything but pre-warn you that they were doing so.

Eh, I'd rather have multiplayer on one disc and campaign on another anyway...My H3 disc didn't load all the maps correctly.

Besides, those were 5 months that I enjoyed.
Honestly ODST was a good game for the price I paid so I don't really care.

Best moment of my life ^.^
Rammstein backstage - Big day out 2011

I wasn't realy buying it for the mythic map pack or the reach beta i was in it for the campaign and since i actualy gave the campaign a go i had the best 4 hours for a very long time. It is definately in my top 5 favourite games but it's people like you just after the goodies on the side like a 5 year old asking his mother for McDonalds just for the toy.

Second - the law under which Microsoft set pricing and control the product is governed by laws - and these law makers would love MS to cross that line.

what the hell?
