ok wtf. i made a post on this a week ago and got flamed all the way to hell, now people agree that grammar is important?

  • 04.30.2004 5:05 AM PDT

I agree that perfect grammar and spelling is not absolutely necessary, as long as the poster has obviously made an effort to make their post legible and readable. Seriously, the "Preview Post" button is there for a reason. Proof-reading does not take much time or effort. Read my signature.

What really bugs me is when people are obviously making a conceited effort to undermine grammatical rules. These people are not valuable members of the community; they lower the general quality of the forum itself. Everybody studied grammar in primary school to some degree, and everybody should be able to construct a basic sentence according to its rules (obviously people from non-English speaking backgrounds can be excused for having less familiarity with English grammatical rules; what's ironic is that many who have English as a first language have worse grammar than those who are from other linguistic backgrounds!).

In short, read my signature. No, not the part about flaming, nor the knife quote. The proof-reading thing. I'll excuse you if you write a post that follows at least the basic rules of grammar (I won't bring you down for breaking obscure rules, since this forum is intended to be informal), and has mostly correct and interpretable spelling (but if you start going on about "grammer", ooh, you're in for it! :) ).

I must say, if everyone cared as much about grammar and spelling as the people in this thread do (with few exceptions) the online world would be a better place. Having a perfectly spelled post with no grammatical errors is not a necessity. Even I do not adhere to perfect grammar all of the time, although my spelling is almost always flawless. A few errors in spelling and grammar here and there are absolutely acceptable in a situation such as this forum. It is when people begin to write in that horrible “1337” speak and use all sorts of shortcuts such as “u r” that it begins to become illegible. Also, people will misspell words to such a degree of inaccuracy that I cannot believe they could possibly be that ignorant. It is this blatant disregard of common courtesy that annoys me to no end.

For me, it's not so much spelling and grammar, but punctuation. As stated before this, some people just can't spell well, and that's not a big deal. If I can tell what they're trying to say, it doesn't matter what it looks like. Grammar is somewhat more important than spelling, but again, as long as I can read it, it doesn't have to be perfect. Punctuation is usually the one that really bothers me. One a person's whole post is longer than this one, and there isn't a single comma or period, let alone a capitalization, it's VERY hard to read. So I say everyone practice good spelling, grammar, AND punctuation. What do you think?

What do you think?
I think that, by definition, punctuation is part of grammar.
2: the use of certain marks to clarify meaning of written material by grouping words grammatically into sentences and clauses and phrases

Surprise surprise, Spelling Whiz responded to a post about grammar. :)

sweet jebus, i didn't realize there were so many of you grammar n@zis out there. well, you can all shove your bedford handbooks (or whatever the hell it is...i've done everything in my power to forget that infernal book) up your @ss. but i mean that in the least disrespectful way. really, i do.
actually though, if you stop and think about it, a lot of the users here are probably from overseas. which would make this their second or third, or maybe even more, language. i commend these international guys for having the courage to post, even though there are people out there who will pick apart everything they have to say and throw it back in their face.
(WARNING! sarcasm alert : critical overload) but of course, the reality is that most people who have bad spelling/grammar in their posts are just dumb. i mean, what else could they possibly be, right? look at me for example - no capitalization at the beginning of my sentences! i'm SO sorry you all had to tax yourselves by reading my single digit IQ sentences, that don't start with a capital letter.
btw (that means "by the way," by the way) ever heard bush's education plans? no? neither have i. i'm not even sure he has any. BUT i digress.

flame at will. i care not. but you grammar n@zis haven't heard the last of me!

a half-brained neanderthal...that can read and write and play halo, among other things. i see. do yourself a favor and never, ever, ever, ever, EVER post anything EVER again if that's the most profound thing you can manage to think up. you wouldn't want to spoil your sophisticated pseudo-intellectual facade, now would you?

Hell, I'm just saying what bad grammar makes people look like, nothing more. You can do whatever you want, my friend. It's just that I advise against using bad grammar. That is, if you care about how people see you.

The choice is yours.

ah, i see now. at last we are at the heart of the matter. your online persona is obviously the grammar n@zi. you want to make a name for yourself as "the perfect grammar guy." so you look around and post follow-ups correcting the grammar of others, while whining incessantly about how nauseas it makes you. and then you issue challenges to find errors in the grammar of your own posts. are you going to petition for a bungie grammar-bee next? if i may be so bold, i think you care a bit too much about what others may think of you. and it could be said that i don't care at all what others think of me.

I find it interesting that the folks from overseas get excused from these sorts of discussions, yet someone who may not have gotten a good education (for whatever reason) gets slammed. Why not be consistant? There are a ton of reasons why someone might not use good grammar. Dyslexia, english as a second (or 3rd, 4th etc.) language, poor education, low IQ, or in the case of l33t speak a different culture, the list goes on.

Yes there are tools out there that help, perhaps not everyone has access to them, or are simply not inclined to use them, as that takes time. I certainly fall into that category, I cannot be bothered to run every post that I make through a checker.

Similarly I cannot be bothered to get all worked up when someone uses improper grammar when reading posts on messageboards. Just because someone might use improper or unconventional gramar or spelling, does not make thier posts or ideas invalid. I do however, manage to get worked up with threads like these ; )

Personally, I find these types of threads to be kind of elietist and obnoxious. But that is just one man's opinion.

Oh, come on! It's not that hard to use puctuation and capitolization.

About the overseas folks... They shouldn't be treated any different. This is an American form made by an American company. You haven't noticed, America speaks mostly English. If you want to post here, you should use the damned English language correctly. Especially if you are American/English.

About education... That's no excuse. Even in -blam!-y American schools one learns the basics of reading and writing. The country has a 90% literacy rate. Any American that posts here (And I'm betting that most of us are American) knows how to capitolize and punctuate.

Now, let's talk time. Hmm... Periods aren't that hard. It's one button on the keyboard. See, look at me go: . . . . . . . . . . . . . That took me less than a second. Capitolization? Well, that's a bit harder... But all you have to do is hit 'Shift' and hold it down for about a milisecond. Here's an example: A a B b C c D d E e F f G g... You know how long that took me? About a second and a half.

So en extra two seconds per sentence is gonna kill you?

Anywho, next subject: 'Net culture. |337 speak. Hacker Language. Man, this -blam!- is not only hard to read, but hacker takes more time to write than regular language. The internet shorthand is different. It saves you from typing a few letters, but most of the things you're shortening can be typed out by hitting two more keys. For example: "u" = "you" and "some1" = "someone". Easy, isn't it?

Personally, I find the people that post like they don't know how to spell are stupid, drooling plebeans. But that's just one man's opinion.

You know what I ment. You're just trying to turn my own points against me.

For your information, I didn't use a spell checker on that post. So I think I did relatively good. Four misspelled words in 700 or so isn't bad (I would consider the misspellings of 'capitalization and 'capitalize' essentually the same word... I didn't know how to spell the word. Now I do. Thank you.), but I made some pretty bad punctuation errors. However, my post isn't so error filled that I come off as a neanderthal.

By the way, I spelt America right.

Americans would have been better, but I digress.

The fact that I knew what you meant is more or less my whole point. I think as long as the information is conveyed, it is ok.

The grand irony of threads like these is that it becomes more of a do as I say, not as I do kind of thing.

I'm not aking for completely perfect posts. I'm asking of capitalization and punctuation. And the discontinued use of certain shorthands like "u" "ur" "some1" etcetera.

I'm saying do as I do. I try to spell things correctly and use proper punctuation. It's easy enough, and it's the least I, nay, we can do to make the forums a better place.

American English. In Standard English, "apologize" and "realize" would be mis-spellings, but that isn't important.

The point is that you should not go ahead and say something about others when you yourself are not able to live up to your own expectations. 'I love the writen word' is not exactly a good way to convey your prowess with language either.
