So I originally was creating a story detailing the continuing adventures of Spartan-1337 from Odd One Out, but that plan fell apart. Now I am just going to attempt to create a backstory for the clumsy Spartan. Here I go.

Reach
New Johannesburg
2517

Dr. Halsey and Senior Chief Petty Officer Franklin Mendez gazed at the lonely child sitting at the base of the tree. The good doctors scan of the planet's inhabitants showed that this child had the genetic traits she was looking for. The purpose? If she liked what she saw, this child would become a Spartan-II super-solider.

"I don't know ma'am," Mendez remarked, "He doesn't seem very special to me, he seems like an average child to me. The others have traits that set them apart, John is taller than most kids his age if I can use an example."

"You disappoint me Mendez," Dr. Halsey replied, "Just because he doesn't have any visible characteristics that set him apart from the rest of the peers doesn't mean he can be ruled out. After all, I am the one who decides his fate in the Spartan-II Program."

Mendez turned his attention back to the child, it wasn't worth it to get into an argument with Halsey, she always won. As all the other children gathered around and talked with each other or played, he just sat by the tree. What was his deal? His thoughts were broken by the sounds he was all to familiar of from his own childhood.

"FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!"

Clusters of children clustered around the tree, removing the child being evaluated from sight. Now Mendez knew what exactly this child was to his peers, the punching bag.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gabriel found himself surrounded, once again, by his classmates. The class bully, Rick, and his posse of tormentors-in-training pounded their fists against their palms ready to beat him up, again. Gabe had had enough of his daily Hell, this ended now.

"Why can't you jerks just buzz off and leave me alone?" asked Gabe, "We do this everyday and I'm sick of it."

"Oh the nerd his sticking up for himself finally," taunted Rick, "Like it really matters anyway, he'll bleed like he always does."

"Now listen to me you ass," Gabe barked back amid a torrent of ohs, "I am not going to take your crap anymore, I am...". He could not finish his sentence before being racked in the jaw by Rick.

"You think you can talk back to me?" Rick asked, "I will knock you down you little -blam!-."

Gabe got up and wiped the blood from his nose. He smiled at his assailants and gave them a "bring it on" gesture his his hand. They obliged. For the next five minutes he was getting punched, kicked, and injured anyway he could. Rick and his friends stomped on his legs, smacked him in the face, and punched him in his gut. Nowhere was safe from their assault. However, Gabe kept getting up and asking for more. Eventually, the bullies started to wear down and that is when Gabe stuck.

He jumped to the ground and delivered a devastating sucker-punch to Rick's face. The head bully flew back and hit the ground him pain. Enraged, the bully gathered his team o brutes and rushed towards Gabriel. In return, Gabe leaped into the air and landed a spinning kick the knocked down all four children. All four kids stumbled to the dirt below, they couldn't believe Gabe as fighting back. While the other three children backed off, Rick still wanted more.

As the bully ran towards Gabe, Gabe was already awaiting him. As soon as Rick was in range, Gabe side-swiped Rick and caused him to fall. Before he hit the ground, Gabe thrust his elbow into Rick's spine. He hit the ground hard. Even before Rick could rise up, Gabe was on his back, proceeded to grab his hair, and slammed his face into the dirt. Blood and dirt caked the former tormentors face while his tears ran down his cheeks. When it was over, Gabe was victorious. As he walked away from the carnage, he stepped on his shoelaces and tumbled down a hill.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Palm squarely in his face, Mendez couldn't believe what he had just seen. Gabriel had kicked the asses of four children, children twice his height and age, but took a spill at the end of the brawl. It was embarrassing, but he saw the doctor chuckle.

"He's in." Dr. Halsey said breaking the awkward silence.

"Doctor if I can say a few words...," Mendez started to until he was interrupted by the delicate hand of Dr. Halsey.

"To be honest Chief I would rather you not, "Dr. Halsey replied, "Gabriel has shown me that he has what it takes to enter the program. He has shown to be a very calculative young man, he wore out his aggressors and stuck back when they were weakest. That is his special trait, he never gives up."

"He tripped over his own shoelaces doctor," Mendez countered, "Don't you think his apparent clumsiness will be a future problem?"

Dr. Halsey thought about it for a moment, but shook her head at that notion.

"Perhaps you'll just have to train him extra hard Chief." Dr. Halsey replied.

"Why do I have a feeling I'm the one who's going to suffer?" asked Mendez.

Halsey's only response was a light chuckle.

Chapter 2

Gabe was suspended shortly after the fight with Rick and his friends. He would not be returning to school for three days, little did anybody know he would never return to school the same. As he slept in his bed, three camouflaged men with a large bag darted towards his home. They were ODSTs, Orbital Drop Shock Troopers who were assigned to abduct Gabe. Normally, three civilian looking ONI operatives would be assigned to the abduction, but this was a special case.

For you see, Gabe was the son of a prominent political official who had his house under script security. Private security forces, cameras, and any obstacle you could imagine littered the home. Of course, this wasn't any trouble for the ODSTs. One launched a grappling hook over one of the walls surrounding the house and had the other two troopers climb up. Retracting the hook, the two troopers rushed towards the house and scurried up the overgrowth on the buildings wall.

Once they gave the signal, the other trooper made his way over the wall with the bag in tow. Luckily, they hadn't been caught. They spotted Gabe fast asleep in his bed and carefully pried open the window to his room. Silently they crept inside and injected a sedative in the sleeping child. One of the ODSTs cradled Gabe in his arms while another put the sack on Gabe's bed. When he unzipped the large bag, he found another child inside, a flash-clone of Gabriel. Taking the clone out of the bag, he set it on the bed and patted him on the head.

As stealthfully as they entered, the ODSTs were gone. Once they got back to their Pelican dropship, they flew off into the night to a military facility miles from public eyes. When they arrived, they saw more Pelicans touching down as well, they housed the other candidates of the Spartan-II Program.

Gabriel awoke dazed and confused in a large mess area surrounded by other children. Some of them were also waking up and looking around curiously as well. He narrowed his focus on a women in a white lab coat standing over them on a makeshift stage. She strolled closer to them and began to spoke.

"Hello," she said, "My name is Dr. Halsey and you all have been chosen for the Spartan-II Program. You may be wondering why you are here. Its simple. You will serve in the United Nations Space Command Defense Force and strive to protect Earth and all of her colonies. I am sorry to say you will not be allowed to see your parents again or go home, that is how this program is."

Some sniffles could be heard through the crowd.

"However, you will become more that you will ever know. Many hardships await you and you will be guided by the best the UNSC has to offer. As of now you will be escorted to the barracks where you will eat a small meal and resume your slumber. Good night and good luck."

UNSC Marines entered the mess hall and signaled the children to follow them. Some children began to get acquainted with each other during the trek, so Gabe waltzed up to another boy around his age.

He had brown hair, freckles and a gap between his teeth. However, as Gabe moved closer to him, this boy seemed to grow taller than those around him. Putting a smile on his face, Gabe stuck out his hand towards the other boy.

"Hi," Gabe greeted, "I'm Gabe, who are you?"

"I'm John." the boy replied plainly.

Both shook hands and started to chat.

"So this is quite the change of scenery huh?" asked Gabe to his new acquaintance.

"Yes it is," John said, "I wonder what will happen to us now."

"Who knows, "Gabe said, "Oh look they're handing out uniforms."

Gabe and the other children gathered around the Marines who handed out their own personal uniforms. Before Gabe got his, one of the Marines made a remark about his number.

"Thirteen thirty-seven seems like a rather large number, aren't there only 150 candidates?" asked the bewildered Marine.

His fellow Marine gave him a shrug.

"At least it isn't over nine-thousand." he stated.

Gabe looked at the patch on his uniform, Gabe-1337. He put it on and noticed John was standing with a group of girls. John was now John-117 while the two girls near him were named Kelly-087 and Linda-058.

"Hey John check out my num..." Gabe-1337 said attempted to say before falling on his face. The two girls laughed a little bit while John reached down and pulled up Gabe from the ground. Dusting himself off, he gave a light chuckle at his stupidity and resumed his remark.

"So check out my number John."

"Thirteen thirty-seven huh?" John asked, "Sounds cooler than 117 I guess. By the way, meet my new friends Linda and Kelly."

They both let out girly giggles, obviously still amused at Gabe's past previous action. A small blush lite Gabe's face, but it turned to shock as he heard a loud bark emanating from the front of the barracks.

"Lights out trainees!" a bear of a man shouted, "You will be very well acquainted with me tomorrow, as such you will need your rest."

Acknowledging the adult authority, every child scrambled for their beds and nestled down for sleep. Gabe's eyes began to close, what awaited him tomorrow kept his mind awake though.

Chapter 3

What followed the brief moment of rest the children were granted could only be described as unadulterated military protocol. Awoken by CPO Mendez, the trainees were heard like cattle outside and were told to do grueling exercises. 100 reps of jumping jacks, sit-ups, and many other strenuous physical training truly pushed the future Spartans to the limit. By the time those exercises were done, Gabe was exhausted. In school he did fine in P.E., but what Mendez was asking them to do was murder.

Without any time to rest, Mendez barked out the order to run, and run they did. For two-miles they jogged to a classroom that housed an A.I. named Déjà. Déjà proceeded to teach them mind-boggling lessons in physics, history, and other useful subjects they would need to their military careers.

The worst of it all was the Playground, a maze with only one goal, ring the bell. This wouldn't be so bad, but the team that finished last would not get supper. Gabe was paired up with a boy named Soren and a girl named René. They pushed through the maze as best they could, but were utterly shocked when they found themselves staring at John all alone at the bell. Unfortunately for John, the goal was for entire team to make it to the bell, he would be punished later on.

All in all, this process lasted many years with even more serious forms of training mixed in. The very pinnacle of the training occurred on 2525, they would never be the same. It was then that the dangerous augmentation process started and would officially make them Spartan-IIs. While Gabe survived, not everyone was so lucky. Many of the candidates could not recover from the augmentations and were either killed by the process or flushed out of the program.

Those who did survive were then sent on missions to defend Earth and her colonies from the Insurgent threat. His first mission was tasked with destroying a Rebel outpost that was rumored to have secret weapons of mass destruction.

Planet: Intuition
Manticore System

Crimson Team darted through the treeline en-route to the rebel base on the planet Intuition. The squad composed of three Spartans, Gabe-1337, Cal-141, and Jorge-052. Clad in standard-issue "Spartan" battle armor, normal Marine-issued combat gear in reality, they maneuvered steathfully among the forest. Once they reach a cliff overlooking the rebel base, Cal-141 went prone and gazed through the scope of her sniper rifle.

She saw the main complex, a series of normal, everyday building and three hangers, and it was crawling with Insurrectionist scum.

"How many?" asked Jorge squinting at the camp below.

Cal responded without removing her eyes from her scope, "Around 50 from what I can see, I don't know how many are inside the hangers or barracks."

"One-hundred and 50 plus units eh?" Gabe stated, "Sounds like decent enough odds, for us anyway."

"Keep your head thirteen thirty-seven," Jorge said sternly, "We have to approach this calmly and with precision. After all, doesn't the UNSC speculate they have WMDs at their disposal? Don't want to stomp on the heels of a fuss considering what happened during our last mission."

"Hey!" Gabe protested, "It isn't my fault that rebel shot me in my...".

"Save it for now, we need a plan." Jorge interrupted.

As they discussed their next move, something rather unfortunate occurred. In what would be a continuation of bad luck on Gabe's part, he took a stumble down the cliff. He flipped, flew, and otherwise cartwheeled down the hard, rocky terrain into the camp below. As he landed on the tarmac of a runway, all the eye's of the rebels became fixated on Gabe-1337.

Unsurprisingly, a hail of gunfire went to the general location of Gabe-1337. Diving aside to a crate, Gabe loaded his assault rifle and returned fire. A few Innes fell, but five more rebels filled their places. Gabe soon heard the sounds of Jorge's signature light machine gun rain down on the opposition as Jorge himself came sliding down the cliffside. Cal herself even returned fire with her sniper rifle. The chaos was only interrupted by the sound of a deep Slavic voice.

"ENOUGH!" the voice echoed through a loudspeaker. Once Jorge and Gabe saw where the voice came from, they were shocked at what they saw. Three Cyclops utility mechs tricked out with new weaponry walked towards the Spartans, at the lead was the leader of the camp and the target of the Spartans, Colonel V.I Demetri.

"So?" the Colonel asked, "These are the Spartans I have heard so much about, yes? Heh heh, I imaged you to be much...taller."

The ping of a sniper round ricocheted off the diamond-plated viewport of the Cyclops, Cal's shot failed. The Colonel fired on her position with a arm-mounted rocket launcher. The blast tore apart Cal's position.

"Cal!" Gabe screamed. Gabe tossed his AR to the side and ran head first towards the trio of Cyclops mechs.

"Gabe no!" Jorge protested. The Colonel only laughed as his would-be aggressor came towards him.
